The Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed heated scenes on Tuesday after National Conference (NC) legislator Abdul Majid Larmi demanded the restoration of the holiday marking the birth anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Larmi said the government should either restore the holiday for Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday or cancel the holiday observed on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.
His remarks led to strong protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers soon after the Assembly proceedings began. BJP members accused the ruling NC of trying to disrupt the functioning of the House.
“The ruling party is trying to disrupt proceedings. How can they talk about cancelling a holiday?” BJP legislator R.S. Pathania said, according to news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
BJP lawmakers also raised slogans in support of Maharaja Hari Singh. BJP legislator Devyani Rana shouted, “Maharaja Hari Singh Amar Rahe.”
Amid the protests and disruption, NC legislators Mubarak Gul and Shamima Firdous strongly demanded that the government restore the holiday on Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday.
PDP legislator Waheed Para also supported the demand, calling it legitimate. He further pressed for the restoration of the Martyrs’ Day holiday.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather warned the protesting BJP members against disrupting the proceedings. He said the Assembly must function according to established procedures.
“The House has to run as per procedure. You cannot do this,” Rather told the protesting lawmakers.
The situation remained tense amid slogans and protests. Later, BJP legislators staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest.
