Addressing the gathering, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir spoke about the growing concern of drug abuse in educational institutions. He said what was once seen as a false campaign has now become a harsh reality affecting campuses across the region. He added that many academicians agree substance abuse among students is becoming a serious challenge.

Prof. Mir also warned students about deceptive methods used to trap young people into addiction. He said unknown individuals may approach students as friends and offer help, while their real aim is to make them customers. He explained that early exposure may seem harmless but can later become a dangerous cycle that is hard to escape.

He further said substance abuse damages academic life and creates wider social problems. According to him, if the trend continues, students may lose interest in studies, unemployment may increase, and crime could rise sharply. He added that addiction can also push individuals towards theft and violence, affecting families and society.

Dr. Jehirul Islam urged students not to turn to drugs because of stress, anxiety or personal setbacks. He said drugs are not a solution and students should instead seek professional medical and psychological support. He also stressed the role of families and society, saying lack of awareness among parents can worsen the issue.

During the workshop, several speakers delivered sessions on legal and social aspects of drug abuse. Dr. Raihana Shawl spoke on the NDPS Act, 1985. Dr. Hilal Ahmad Najar discussed rehabilitation mechanisms in India. Dr. Imran Ahad addressed rights of citizens and legal procedures. Kinjal Bagdi highlighted prevention of drug abuse and its social impact, while Rabi Arafat gave an overview of Nasha Mukt Abhiyan Policy 2025 and punishments under the NDPS Act.

Focus on Gender Equity and Representation

Vice-Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath said that while Indian culture has always respected women, this respect has not fully translated into real empowerment.

He explained that the Bill aims to close this gap by ensuring women get proper representation in legislative bodies.

Registrar Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir added that empowering women can improve society in many ways, including education, economy, and poverty reduction.

Experts Highlight Importance of the Bill

Prof. Vandana Mishra shared that women should not just seek equality but recognise their unique strengths in leadership and decision-making.

She said that greater participation of women in politics can bring positive changes in governance and public policies.

Dr. Sri Devi Y described the Bill as a historic step to correct the low representation of women in Parliament. She noted that women currently hold only around 15% of seats, and a 33% reservation could bring meaningful change.

Historical Perspective

Dr. Salma Khan explained that the idea of women’s reservation dates back to 1996 and took nearly three decades to become reality.

She also pointed out the success of women’s reservation at the grassroots level through Panchayati Raj institutions.

Call for Inclusive Governance

Other speakers, including Dr. Nusrat Jabeen, Dr. Gulafroz Jan, Dr. Mir Insha Farooq, Dr. Himabindu, and Dr. Sakina Akhter, stressed that the Bill will make governance more inclusive and responsive.

They highlighted that increased participation of women can help address issues such as:

  • Gender-based violence
  • Healthcare access
  • Social justice

They also spoke about challenges like social barriers and limited opportunities, which the Bill aims to overcome.

Final Note

The panel discussion concluded with a strong message: empowering women in politics is essential for building a fair and inclusive society.

The event reflected the growing academic interest in policies that promote gender equality and meaningful participation of women in decision-making.
