Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned on Monday after repeated disruptions and heated exchanges between members during Question Hour. The House is scheduled to reconvene at 10 am on Tuesday.
BJP Members Raise Slogans During Question Hour
The disruption began during Question Hour, when BJP legislators raised slogans including “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”. The slogans prompted reactions from members on the treasury and other opposition benches.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather repeatedly appealed to the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue.
“Go back to your seats and allow the House to continue with proceedings. Don’t force me to take action against you,” the Speaker warned.
Despite the Speaker’s intervention, the disruptions continued, affecting the conduct of Question Hour.
Gurezi Urges Speaker to Continue Question Hour
Amid the commotion, Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmad Gurezi urged the Speaker to continue with Question Hour and accused the BJP members of deliberately wasting the House’s time.
“None of you will be in the House after the next election. You ruined this State,” Gurezi told the protesting BJP legislators.
Tarigami’s Statehood Remark Triggers Fresh Exchange
The situation intensified when CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami asked the BJP members to raise another slogan — “Statehood ko restore karo”.
The remark drew objections from BJP members and led to a heated exchange between Tarigami and the protesting legislators.
The commotion also involved Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed, while senior National Conference leader and Khanyar MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar stood up and raised slogans against the BJP members.
The Speaker continued efforts to restore order as Question Hour was disrupted by the exchanges.
Short Autumn Session Begins Amid Political Differences
The autumn session began earlier on Monday, with Speaker Rather appealing to legislators to maintain orderly proceedings and make effective use of the limited time available during the short session.
The official J&K Legislative Assembly website lists the current session from September 21 to September 30, 2026, with seven sittings scheduled.
The opposition has indicated that issues including employment, outsourcing, regularisation of workers, electricity tariffs and other public concerns will feature prominently during the session.
Assembly to Meet Again on Tuesday
Following the disruption, the Assembly was adjourned for the day. Legislative business and discussions are scheduled to resume on Tuesday morning.
The first day’s proceedings highlighted the sharp political differences between members over issues including statehood and public concerns, setting the stage for further debate during the remaining sittings of the autumn session.
