Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma on Saturday said basic public issues cannot be attributed solely to the absence of statehood, asserting that matters such as electricity infrastructure, roads and public services require administrative action. Sharma made the remarks while interacting with delegations representing trade unions, businesses, traders, transporters, civil society, professionals, medical associations, students and other sections of society in Srinagar. The meetings were part of the BJP’s ongoing public outreach programme across Jammu and Kashmir.
‘Basic Issues Require Governance’
The delegations raised a range of concerns, including shortages of electricity infrastructure, inadequate staff in schools, availability of doctors in hospitals, damaged roads and potholes, employment and civic amenities.
“People are raising basic and genuine issues—electricity poles, shortage of staff in schools, doctors in hospitals, damaged roads and potholes, employment-related concerns and civic amenities. These are issues that require governance and administrative action,” Sharma said.
He said the concerns raised during the interactions would be taken up with the concerned authorities and, where necessary, raised during the forthcoming Assembly session.
Sharma Targets Government Over ‘Lack of Powers’
Sharma alleged that the National Conference-led government had repeatedly cited a “lack of powers” while responding to public issues over the past two years.
According to Sharma, this has contributed to confusion and frustration among sections of the public. He argued that day-to-day problems such as electricity infrastructure, school staffing, healthcare and damaged roads cannot wait for political developments.
“If the government believes that every issue requires Statehood, then it must explain what responsibilities it is presently discharging and why,” he said.
Concerns Over Employees and Youth Employment
Sharma also raised issues concerning Daily Wagers, GRS, Technical Assistants, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and NHM employees, particularly their demands relating to job security, remuneration and regularisation.
He further referred to complaints about alleged corruption, delays in Panchayat elections, increased power tariffs and employment-related concerns among young people.
“Thousands of young people are looking for opportunities and a secure future. The government must address their concerns instead of allowing frustration to grow,” Sharma said.
Issues to Be Raised in Assembly
The Leader of Opposition said the concerns brought before him would be taken up through appropriate forums, including the J&K Legislative Assembly and, where necessary, with the Central Government.
He said the BJP would continue its public outreach programme across Jammu and Kashmir and raise public concerns through constitutional and democratic forums.
“Our responsibility as the Opposition is to listen to the people, raise their issues in the Assembly and ensure that the government is held accountable,” Sharma said.
J&K BJP Secretary Arif Raja, Co-Convenor All Cells Bilal Parray, senior leader Ali Mohammad Mir, and District Presidents Sheikh Salman and Ghulam Hasan were also present during the interactions.
