Lahore: Pakistani authorities have detained Aleema Khan, the sister of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on September 27.

Aleema Khan Taken to Kot Lakhpat Jail
Aleema Khan has been publicly advocating for the release of her brother, who has remained in prison since 2023.
Her sister Noreen Niazi said she received information that Aleema had been taken to Kot Lakhpat Jail after being taken into custody while leaving her home.
The detention was ordered under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, which provides authorities with powers to detain individuals on public-order grounds. Dawn reported that the Lahore Deputy Commissioner ordered her detention for 30 days.
Detention Comes Before September 27 PTI Protest
The action comes ahead of a PTI protest and march planned for September 27, with the party demanding the release of Imran Khan.
The planned demonstration has prompted increased preparations by authorities. Dawn reported that police in Islamabad had already detained several PTI activists ahead of the planned protest and were making security arrangements.
PTI Condemns Detention
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned Aleema Khan’s detention and called for her to be presented before a court.
PTI leaders have criticised the authorities’ action, while the government has cited public-order concerns surrounding the planned demonstrations. Reuters reported that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the government would take necessary measures to prevent disruption linked to the protest.
Legal Challenge Available
People detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance can challenge detention orders before the High Court and can also submit a representation to the provincial government.
The detention comes amid heightened political tensions in Pakistan ahead of the September 27 PTI protest. Imran Khan, who was removed from office in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote, continues to face multiple legal cases and remains imprisoned.
