Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Says ‘New York Is No Courtroom’ for India’s Muslims

Reacting to remarks made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat concerning Muslims in New York, Nasir-ul-Islam questioned why the conduct and standing of Indian Muslims should be discussed outside the country.
“New York is no courtroom for India’s Muslims,” the Grand Mufti said.
He said that if questions concerning Indian Muslims are raised in India, the community would respond with facts, dignity and confidence.
‘Indian Muslims do not need certificates of patriotism’
Nasir-ul-Islam said Muslims have made an enduring contribution to India’s sovereignty, freedom struggle, dignity and national life.
He said Indian Muslims do not need certificates of patriotism from anyone, adding that their sacrifices, service and commitment are part of the country’s history.
“India belongs equally to every citizen irrespective of religion, region or language,” he said.
The Grand Mufti maintained that India’s strength lies in recognising the collective contribution of its citizens rather than questioning the loyalty of any particular community.
He said the Republic was built through the sacrifices and contributions of people from different communities and regions.
Appeals for restraint and constitutional values
Nasir-ul-Islam appealed to public figures and responsible voices to exercise restraint while discussing sensitive issues concerning India’s diverse population.
“Let us debate ideas on Indian soil, uphold constitutional morality, and strengthen the fraternity that binds 1.4 billion Indians together,” he said.
He emphasised that Muslims are an integral part of India’s past, present and future.
The Grand Mufti further said the patriotism of Indian Muslims should not become a subject of debate abroad, stressing that their contribution to the country is a matter of history.
He called for discussions on citizenship, social harmony and national character to remain rooted in India’s constitutional framework and the principle of equality among citizens.
