CJP ‘Chalo Sansad’ March Faces Police Action as Protesters Attempt to Reach Parliament
NEW DELHI, July 20: Tensions escalated in the national capital on Monday as supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) attempted to march from Jantar Mantar towards the Parliament of India under their “Chalo Sansad” campaign. Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel stopped the procession, leading to clashes after demonstrators tried to breach security barricades. The march coincided with the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session and drew thousands of students, activists and supporters demanding reforms in India’s education system. Protesters called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging repeated examination paper leaks and seeking greater transparency and accountability in the conduct of competitive examinations.
Security across central Delhi remained on high alert throughout the day. Authorities deployed thousands of police personnel, RAF units, barricades, water cannons and riot-control vehicles around Parliament, while prohibitory orders under Section 163 remained in force in parts of New Delhi. Several Metro stations and key roads were placed under restrictions to prevent protesters from reaching the Parliament complex.
Delhi Police reiterated that no permission had been granted for the Parliament march and warned that any unauthorised gathering in the sensitive security zone would invite legal action. Officials maintained that the restrictions were necessary to ensure public safety and maintain law and order during the Monsoon Session.
The protest has gained nationwide attention following the prolonged hunger strike by activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose hospitalisation intensified public support for the movement. CJP leaders have said they remain willing to engage in talks with the government but insist their campaign will continue until their key demands are addressed.
Meanwhile, prominent personalities, including actor Shabana Azmi and actor-director Prakash Raj, joined protesters at Jantar Mantar to express solidarity with the movement, adding further visibility to the demonstration.
The situation in central Delhi remains tense, with security agencies closely monitoring developments as authorities continue efforts to prevent protesters from entering the Parliament precincts.
