In a heartfelt statement, Adv. Mursaleen has officially declared his disassociation from the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), marking a significant shift in his political journey. The announcement came with a deep expression of personal pain, as Mursaleen likened his departure from the party to the emotional sorrow he felt when bidding farewell to his father. Despite parting ways with the party, Mursaleen assured his supporters that his commitment to his constituency and its people remains unwavering.
“I hereby declare my disassociation from AIP in every manner. This decision is painful but necessary, and it does not reflect any change in my love and respect for Er. Rashid. May Allah bless him with freedom,” Mursaleen stated, clarifying that his decision was not taken lightly. He emphasized that the parting does not signal the end of his political journey, and while he has yet to determine his next steps, he will keep his well-wishers updated on any future decisions.
Mursaleen also made it clear that his constituents will continue to be his priority. “I am not leaving my people or my constituency,” he assured. “I will remain dedicated to my voters until my last breath.” He expressed that his relationship with the people he represents is deeply rooted and cannot be severed by any political change.
The announcement has sent ripples through the local political landscape, with many closely watching Mursaleen’s next move. His pledge to remain by his constituents’ side suggests that, although his association with AIP has ended, his political influence and dedication to the community are far from over.
Peoples Conference and Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday accused the National Conference Government in Jammu and Kashmir of endorsing August 5, 2019 (abrogation of J&K’s special status) changes.
Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone and PDP legislator, Waheed Para, reacted sharply over proposed deletion of references to J&K Constitution in business rules.
PC chairman and MLA Handwara, Sajad Lone wrote on X: “Endorsement of draft proposal prepared by Assembly secretariat regarding Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House will be the most explicit and unforgivable ratification of August 5, 2019 changes.”
“It will effectively end once and for all any scope for legal challenge to 5 August changes, in the future. While we dreamt of a an unambiguous resolution by the new assembly rejecting 5 August 2019, and that becoming a reference point in any future legal challenge —-now we have a shocker,” he wrote.
“The same Assembly is being used to bury any such chances of legal challenges in the future. The present assembly reflecting the will of people of J and K, will now be remembered as the endorser not the rejecter of August 5 2019,” he added.
“The Assembly which we thought will be the voice of people of J and K is now a shameless rubber stamp of the perpetrators of August 5. The ruling NC led government purposely constituted a Committee which had 6 NC members and 2 BJP members. There was no one from the Kashmir based opposition parties or MLAs,” Lone wrote.
“This committee endorses all changes made on 5 August 2019. By virtue of this draft— they even took away references to J&K Constitution and bills governing permanent residents from the Rules. Such a cruel joke at the expense of people of Kashmir,” he said.
“Let me briefly summarise the NC BJP covert agreement to endorse and normalise 5 August 2019. First they script the context. NC starts the “all are BJP” discourse. Second, the BJP mysteriously behaves in a manner which endorses that discourse. The discourse is strengthened and then elections are announced. While the people of J and K to some extent subscribe to the “all others are BJP” discourse, the agencies led by a retired old war horse in uninterrupted engagement with the NC from the last 3 years, ensures total compliance of the agencies in favour of NC,” he wrote.
“This 42 seat lottery is a gift in order to endorse. The NC is the master endorser of all the changes that Delhi had brought in. Remember the older gifts in lieu of endorsements. 1975 gift of government with no MLAs to endorse erosions from 1950 to 1975. 1996 gift of government on a platter by conducting an exercise of selection in Kashmir and calling it election. That was to endorse the killings and acts of violence committed by the state. And now 2024 gift to endorse changes made on 5 August 2019. It is a curse to be an MLA of an assembly which will be remembered for endorsing 5 August,” Lone wrote.
Meanwhile, PDP MLA Waheed Para posted a screenshot of a news report on X which read: “The modifications have been proposed to make the rules in sync with the constitutional changes effected on August 5, 2019,” a member of the committee wishing to remain anonymous said.
“The modified J&K Assembly business rules mark a shift from Article 370, effectively endorsing the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019. A clear acknowledgment of the new status quo,” Para wrote on X. (KNO)

“I think it is time CM sahib asks for the return of those shawls, which he so slavishly gifted and wrapped around the shoulders of top echelons of BJP. I think CM sahib should also revise the cloudless weather commentary that he made in Sonmarg.” he added.
“On a serious note dear CM sahib ; Chief Ministerial duties go much beyond skiing and selfies. It is a serious and a pious business. Do what it takes to deliver. People have voted for a deliverer not a delivery boy.” Sajjad lone said.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s tribute to Tapan Bose encapsulates the deep respect and admiration that many held for the late activist. His death may have left a void, but his lifelong efforts toward justice, peace, and reconciliation will continue to inspire those who continue the work he so passionately championed.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra while debunking reports that the alliance with the National Conference is on the verge of a collapse, termed them as “malicious” and “concocted.”
Tariq Karra, asserted that there was no truth in these reports and that Congress was committed to this alliance and in support of the present dispensation.
“These are just baseless, malicious, concocted, and constructed rumours. I don’t have much to say about it. This is not a thing to respond to,” Karra stated.

Imran Khan’s journey from a celebrated cricket hero to a jailed political figure is a story filled with passion, determination, and controversy. His life’s arc, stretching from sports glory to political upheaval, captures the attention of millions worldwide. This article explores the life of Imran Khan, his rise to fame, his foray into politics, his struggles against corruption, and the circumstances that led to his imprisonment.
Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi was born on October 5, 1952, in Lahore, Pakistan. He belonged to an affluent Pashtun family and was educated at prestigious institutions, including the Royal Grammar School in Worcester and later at Keble College, Oxford. From an early age, Khan showed a keen interest in sports, especially cricket, which would later become his ticket to global fame.
Khan made his debut in international cricket in 1971 at the age of 18. His cricketing prowess, particularly as a fast bowler, quickly made him a crucial part of the Pakistani cricket team. Over the years, he evolved into a brilliant all-rounder and was known for his charismatic leadership. His crowning achievement came in 1992 when he led Pakistan to its first and only Cricket World Cup victory. This triumph not only solidified his status as a national hero but also marked the end of his illustrious cricketing career.
Philanthropic Ventures
Following his retirement from cricket, Khan channeled his energy into philanthropy. He established the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in 1994, named after his mother who had died of cancer. The hospital was a significant achievement as it provided free cancer treatment to thousands of patients, regardless of their financial status.
In addition to his contributions to healthcare, Khan also founded Namal University in Mianwali. This institution aimed to offer quality higher education to the underprivileged, further cementing his image as a benefactor of the poor and marginalized.
Entry into Politics
Imran Khan’s transition into politics was driven by his dissatisfaction with the status quo and his desire to bring about meaningful change in Pakistan. In 1996, he founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which translates to Pakistan Movement for Justice. The party’s primary focus was on anti-corruption, justice, and economic reform.
In the initial years, PTI struggled to gain significant traction. The political landscape of Pakistan was dominated by established parties like the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). However, Khan’s persistence and his appeal as a clean, honest leader who was above the typical political fray gradually started to attract a following.
Rise to Power
Khan’s political fortunes began to change in the 2010s, as he capitalized on growing public disillusionment with the traditional political elites. His message of accountability, justice, and a corruption-free Pakistan resonated with a large section of the population, particularly the youth.
In the 2013 general elections, PTI emerged as a significant political force, although it could not secure a majority. The turning point came in the 2018 elections when PTI won a sweeping victory, and Imran Khan was sworn in as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan. His ascent to power was seen as a new beginning for a country long plagued by corruption and mismanagement.
Governance and Challenges
Khan’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by a mix of achievements and challenges. He implemented various reforms aimed at improving governance, economic stability, and social welfare. His government launched the Ehsaas Programme, which was designed to reduce poverty and provide social protection to the most vulnerable segments of society.
However, his administration also faced significant hurdles. The economic situation remained precarious, with inflation and unemployment posing serious challenges. His government’s relationship with the military, traditionally a powerful institution in Pakistan, also began to strain over disagreements on key issues, including the appointment of military officials and foreign policy decisions.
Conflict with the Military
The military’s influence in Pakistan’s political affairs is well-documented, and any leader’s success often depends on maintaining a stable relationship with it. Khan’s relationship with the military, which was initially supportive, began to sour during his time in office. Reports of disagreements over policy directions and key appointments became frequent, leading to speculation about growing rifts.
The culmination of these tensions came in April 2022, when Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. This move was widely perceived as being backed by the military, which had grown increasingly disillusioned with Khan’s governance.
Post-Ouster Political Struggles
Following his removal from office, Khan became a vocal critic of the military’s role in politics. He accused the establishment of orchestrating his ousting and began rallying his supporters against what he described as a corrupt and unjust system. His post-ouster period was marked by a series of mass protests and rallies, where he called for fresh elections and a return to civilian supremacy.
Khan’s defiance and his refusal to bow down to pressure made him a target of various legal cases. He faced numerous charges, ranging from corruption to incitement of violence. His supporters viewed these cases as politically motivated, aimed at sidelining him from the political scene.
Imprisonment and Legacy
In January 2025, Imran Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges. His imprisonment was seen by many as a move to remove a potent threat to the entrenched political and military elite. Despite his incarceration, Khan’s popularity remained undiminished. His supporters continued to view him as a martyr who was being punished for challenging a corrupt system.
Khan’s legacy is a complex one. On one hand, he is celebrated as a cricketing legend and a philanthropist who made significant contributions to Pakistani society. On the other hand, his political career has been marked by both bold reforms and contentious relations with the military and political adversaries.
Conclusion
Imran Khan’s life story is a testament to his resilience and his unwavering commitment to his principles. From his days as a cricketing icon to his time as a political leader, Khan has consistently sought to challenge the status quo and fight for a better Pakistan. His journey, filled with triumphs and tribulations, reflects the struggles of a man who dared to dream of a corruption-free Pakistan. Whether seen as a hero or a controversial figure, Imran Khan’s impact on Pakistan’s political landscape is undeniable, and his story will continue to inspire debates and discussions for years to come.

Talking to the reporters here, Wani said that the parties in the opposition should do constructive opposition and must not spread negativity. “The opposition should think beyond the vested interests,” he said, adding that one of the opposition parties has been responsible for the current mess in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that it is because of the opposition party that J&K is presently facing such a situation. “Had they worked positively, the situation would have been different,” he said.
Replying to a query, Wani said that one should appreciate the way the Chief Minister put forth every issue before the Prime Minister. “PM has rightly said that there is an apt time for everything. We believe the right time has come and the restoration of statehood must be ensured now,” he added.

Professor Sandeep Singh served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Life Long Learning, Facility of Social Science, at Jammu University. He was also the former President of Jammu University Teachers Association
JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra on Wednesday welcomed the two leaders in the party and said it indicates a “change in the thought process of people especially in the awakened class in Jammu that Congress is the only secular, democratic and unifying force which can do justice to all sections of people.”
“I have presented the changing mood of different sections of the society. Sandeep Singh is professor. He has done PhD in Nehruvian Philosophy. He belongs to that section of society that builds opinion in the society. Sohit Sharma is connected to grassroots. He belongs to that area which is called bastion of negative politics, from Old Mandi. With the changing thought process, people are realising that if they can rely on any party it is Congress,” Tariq Hameed Karra said.
Karra further said that according to him, people have started understanding that “there is no other alternative without Congress.”
“If we see the entire country then the two prominent parties. Congress is known as secular party on the other side there is the BJP which is known for its communal character. The confrontation between the two is the clash of two thought processes that have been going on since pre-independence. Till 2014 there was a secular thought process. After 2014 the negative thought process is in front,” he said.
He further said that people have started believing that Congress is a compulsion in the country and its strengthening is also a compulsion. Karra added that this indicates a “positive change” which will further strenghthen in the coming times.
“The stand of Congress is consistent. The business rules which are not being created or if anyone is not allowing it to form then it is not a good trend. It is not in the national interest. The issue of statehood and why it is being delayed, it is not in the national interest. This is not nationalism. Party interest is being given priority and national interest is becoming a casualty. People are suffering due to dual power centres. Some people are enjoying the stalemate,” the JKPCC President said.
Taking to media persons Prof Sandeep Singh said that he believes that it was natural for people to be part of Congress as “it reflected the ethos of Indianness and of the constitution.” He also expressed his concern for the “distortion of parliamentary democracy” in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said that the present leadership of PCC led by Tariq Hameed Karra encouraged him to actively join the Congress party for the betterment of the people.

Minister for Health & Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakina Itoo, criticized MP Srinagar and senior National Conference leader Aga Ruhullah Mehdi over his participation in a recent reservation protest outside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s residence, calling it a “cheap publicity stunt”.dangerous political crisis in the National Conference
Itoo, who is also a member of the cabinet sub-committee reviewing Jammu and Kashmir’s Reservation Policy, criticized Ruhullah’s tactics in an interview on a local channel, saying, “It’s the wrong way. It is not the right way to go and stand outside the CM’s house for a protest. Does Omar Abdullah have a magic wand that he will wave around and your job will be done? For cheap publicity, you get yourself clicked by the media and then claim that you are trying to pressurize the government”.
This comment came amidst growing tensions within the National Conference, as the party faces increasing divisions over political strategies and leadership.
“The government is doing whatever is in their hands and whatever is possible. We will do every endeavor which will be for the larger good of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. We will leave no stone unturned to help our people. The chief minister Omar Abdullah has already formed a cabinet sub-committee, and it is working. The committee will submit its report soon, and it will be best for all,” Minister Sakina Itoo said. Sakina Itoo’s remarks point out the widening gap between Ruhullah and other NC leaders, signaling deeper fractures within the party as it grapples with ideological differences and public posturing.
Recent developments within the National Conference (NC) have worsened party divisions. Aga Ruhullah, who has led protests demanding political change, continues to clash with the party leadership.
Ruhullah’s actions have sparked a war of words within the National Conference, particularly with CM Omar Abdullah, who recently urged Ruhullah to focus on statehood protests in Delhi instead of local issues. Ruhullah responded firmly, stating that he remains committed to the restoration of Article 370 over statehood, which he views as a hollow promise.
National Conference (NC) leader Imran Amin Shah today commended Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for remaining available in Kashmir during the Chil-I-Kalan-the harsh winter period- and closely monitoring the administration’s response to challenges posed by heavy snowfall in last two weeks.

On the 9th anniversary of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a gathering at Dara Shikoh, Bijbheara, saw party members and supporters paying tribute to the late leader.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti recalled her father as a statesman who championed “peace with dignity” and tirelessly served the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She highlighted his visionary governance as Chief Minister noting that his leadership left an indelible mark, even in challenging times.
Mufti Sayeed’s tenure from 2002 to 2005 was pivotal for the region. Despite holding just 16 seats, his policies focused on the people, establishing security and laying the foundation for a new era in governance. His efforts to bridge the gap between Delhi and Kashmir, as well as his bold moves like opening the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, facilitated cross-border trade and family reunions, promoting dialogue and reconciliation.
In a region still grappling with political instability, Mufti Sayeed’s pragmatic approach—centered on dialogue, mutual respect, and inclusivity—remains a guiding principle for conflict resolution today.
Under his leadership, Jammu and Kashmir saw significant advancements in education, infrastructure, and agriculture. His vision also led to the establishment of universities and colleges, benefiting all regions, including Ladakh. Notably, the Prime Minister’s package for the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits was another landmark initiative during his tenure.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Mehbooba Mufti, while paying tribute, contrasted her father’s governance with the current administration. She pointed out, “Mufti Sahab transformed the region despite limited seats. Today, despite a clear majority, the government is silent on critical issues from unjust employee terminations to rising unemployment, and a traumatic process of verification.
Ms.Mufti took a dig at the current government urging it to stop dividing the young generation and people of Jammu and Kashmir along quota lines. She called for an end to the ongoing injustice against open merit while ensuring that the rights of marginalized and underrepresented communities across J&K are safeguarded.
She reminded that past governments, including her own, ensured that state subjects of J&K were adequately represented and their seats secured. “It is unfortunate that today, instead of creating opportunities and fostering unity, the government is resorting to policies that divide and alienate our youth,” she remarked.
She emphasized that Mufti Sayeed’s approach of dialogue and inclusivity, absent today, was essential to addressing the Kashmir issue while in power.
“His vision of ‘peace with dignity’ and his belief that dialogue is key to lasting peace will continue to guide our efforts for a just Jammu and Kashmir,” she remarked.
The event was attended by senior PDP leaders and supporters, who pledged to carry forward Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s legacy and vision for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.(KNS)
NC MP Agha Rahullah reiterated his stance on the restoration of Article 370, calling it the core issue for the people of Jammu & Kashmir. According to KNS correspondent, his statement on X came in response to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent remarks suggesting that Rahullah should lead a protest for statehood in front of Parliament. Rahullah emphasized that his political position has been clear since 2019, stating, “After 2019, my political stance has been crystal clear. At one of my earliest public gatherings in Budgam and then at other gatherings throughout Kashmir and also in my interviews post-abrogation, I told my people that our fight must be for the restoration of 370 and the dignity it embodies for the people of Jammu & Kashmir.” Acknowledging the desire to protest for statehood in Delhi, Rahullah expressed his willingness to participate and urged organizers to take the lead. “I AM READY to participate in such a protest and invite those prioritizing statehood to organize it. I will also try to organize support from at least more than 100 Hon’ble MPs. I believe for them there is no better time than January to organize it, when India’s Constitution—the very document that enshrined our special status—was adopted,” he wrote. However, Rahullah made it clear that the abrogation of Article 370 remains the pivotal issue.”The abrogation of Article 370 was a calculated act of humiliation, and a deep wound deliberately inflicted upon us. The subsequent demotion to a Union Territory was a further attempt to impress upon us the indignity of the abrogation,” he said. He further criticized the move, calling it a betrayal and an effort to subjugate the people of Jammu & Kashmir. “The abrogation was a political statement, a declaration that our sacrifices mean nothing, and that our future is theirs to dictate. Given this betrayal, this calculated attempt to break our spirit and subjugate our will, I cannot, in good conscience, sidestep from the fight for our special status and settle for the hollow promise of mere statehood. Shouldn’t our voices first rise for our honor, our identity, and the autonomy we have long been denied?” Concluding his statement, Rahullah reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status, stating, “I think they should, and I will keep raising mine, louder each time. The Tree Remembers.” This post highlights the growing debate within Jammu & Kashmir over the priorities of statehood versus the restoration of Article 370. (KNS)
The entire Lal Bazar, Nowshera and other adjacent areas are under severe threat in absence of fire and emergency services. There is an urgent need to setup a Fire Service Station in the area to address any eventuality particularly growing fire incident. Govt is required to address the public concern, on priority to ensure safety of life and property.
J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC)General Secretary and Party District President for Srinagar Irfan Naqib said this while reacting to a very recent devastating fire incident in the Lal Bazar area of Srinagar. Naqib expressed grave concern over the absence of appropriate fire and emergency services in Lal Bazar or in it’s adjacent areas despite the fact Lal Bazar and Nowshera areas are densely populated, which could have invited the attention of the authorities with respect to setting up of fire service station, but that has not happened, as yet.
People are feeling scared whenever any unfortunate fire incident happens, Naqib said and added that there is a fire service station in Hazratbal with two fire brigades, but that is neither a solution nor enough to cover Lal bazar, Nowshera and other adjacent areas. JKPCC General Secretary urged upon J&K Govt especially LG Manoj Sinha to personally look into this urgent requirement of setting up a Fire Service Station in Lal Bazar to address public concern.(KNS)
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has raised strong objections to the acquisition of 5000 kanals of prime agricultural land in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, for establishing a new campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT).
Taking to social media platform X, Mufti expressed her concerns, calling the move another example of what she describes as unchecked land appropriation under the guise of “development” in the region.
“Grabbing land in Kashmir under the ruse of ‘development’ in J&K continues unabated,” she wrote. “Pray tell what’s the need to seize 5000 kanals of prime agricultural land in Pulwama to establish a NIT? If education was such a priority, why have a lopsided reservation in the first place?”
Mufti’s remarks underline growing discontent among locals and political leaders who view such large-scale land acquisitions as detrimental to Kashmir’s agricultural economy. Critics argue that while education infrastructure is essential, utilising fertile agricultural land for construction projects risks long-term harm to the region’s resources and livelihoods.
This controversy adds to the ongoing debate over land reforms and development priorities in Jammu and Kashmir, with many demanding a balanced approach that safeguards local interests.
The government has yet to respond to Mufti’s statement or provide further details on the proposed NIT campus in Pulwama.
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh strongly condemned the ongoing power cuts and water crisis in Kashmir, accusing the National Conference (NC) government, led by Omar Abdullah, of failing to address these critical issues.
Tarun Chugh criticized the government for neglecting its electoral promise of providing 200 units of free electricity, stating that there is still no sign of fulfilling this commitment. Instead, the people of Kashmir are enduring unscheduled and frequent power cuts, which have plunged their lives into severe hardship. He emphasized that during the harsh winter months, particularly the ongoing Chilai Kalan—the 40-day coldest period starting December 21, when temperatures drop below freezing—access to electricity is not a luxury but a necessity.
Highlighting the dire situation, Sh. Tarun Chugh pointed out that Srinagar recorded a night temperature of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on the first day of Chilai Kalan, the lowest in over three decades. Prolonged power outages, coupled with water scarcity, have left residents struggling to meet their basic needs.
“The NC government has failed to prioritize essential amenities like electricity and water. The water crisis in the Valley is equally alarming, adding to the hardships faced by the people. The administration’s negligence towards these issues is a complete failure to address the fundamental needs of its citizens,” Tarun Chugh asserted.
Tarun Chugh warned that if immediate steps are not taken to restore electricity and resolve the water crisis, the BJP will organize demonstrations against the government.
“The Omar Abdullah-led administration must act swiftly to address the suffering of the people and fulfill its promises. Neglecting these concerns is unacceptable, and the BJP will not remain silent while the people of Kashmir face such hardships,” he said.
The BJP leader demanded that the National Conference government take serious note of the situation and work without delay to restore normalcy, ensuring that the people of Kashmir receive the electricity and water they desperately need during this challenging period.
He further criticized Omar Abdullah’s leadership, accusing him of losing the trust of both the people and his own party. Referring to the protest by Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi outside Abdullah’s residence and other parties joining in, Chugh remarked, “This is a clear sign of the Chief Minister’s failure. Omar Abdullah must resign immediately.”
Every Friday in Kashmir brings a lingering question: Will Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, be permitted to deliver his sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar? The decision, often taken at the highest administrative level, reflects a broader dilemma in handling the Valley’s religious and political dynamics.
In recent weeks, the Mirwaiz has been prevented from addressing the faithful. This comes after a brief period earlier this year when he resumed sermons following his four-year house arrest imposed before the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. His first sermon after his release in September 2023 saw him emotionally recount the struggles faced by the Kashmiri people, calling for dialogue and reconciliation.
A senior government official explained that the policy surrounding Mirwaiz remains fluid, with decisions swaying between local police input and directives from top administrators. Authorities cite his occasional political statements during sermons as a primary reason for restricting his access to the pulpit. Recent comments condemning violence in Sambhal and other political matters have reportedly raised concerns.
Critics argue that such actions undermine the government’s claims of peace in the region. A police officer noted that arbitrarily barring Mirwaiz could be counterproductive, especially given his history as a moderate voice advocating dialogue.
Mirwaiz, whose father and uncle were victims of violence, has long been a proponent of peaceful resolution. However, his intermittent detentions and restrictions reflect the Centre’s struggle to balance religious freedoms with perceived security concerns.
Opposition leaders, including PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, have criticized the government for these actions. Both called for Mirwaiz to be allowed to perform his religious duties without interference, emphasizing his role as a revered spiritual leader.
Despite the challenges, Mirwaiz remains steadfast in his commitment to representing the people of Kashmir. Speaking about his situation, he stated, “The pulpit of Jamia Masjid has always been a voice of the people. Silencing me won’t silence their concerns.”
The Jamia Masjid, under the Mirwaiz’s leadership, continues to stand as a symbol of faith and resistance in Kashmir, even as the region navigates its complex political landscape.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said there is no discussion in the INDIA bloc regarding a change of leadership and that a meeting of the constituents has not been held.
“No such discussion is taking place, there has been no meeting of INDIA bloc; where will the talk of leadership change? There is no such thing,” Omar Abdullah said answering media queries on Wednesday.
He was asked if there were discussions for a leadership change in the opposition grouping.
He also said Congress and BJP are two parties with a national footprint and in such a situation, Congress has a role of leadership of opposition.
Trinamool Congress leaders have suggested change in the leadership of the INDIA bloc following the election drubbing of the Congress in Maharashtra and the party losing Haryana assembly polls despite huge expectations of its victory.
Trinamool Congress general secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee on December 16 said that Mamata Banerjee is a senior leader and three-time Chief MInister.
“INDIA alliance will sit and discuss this. She is the senior-most. This is her third term as the Chief Minister and she has also been a Union Minister before as well. So there should be a detailed discussion regarding this…,” the TMC MP told reporters.
RJD leader Lalu Prasad and NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar have backed suggestions that Mamata Banerjee is capable to lead the alliance.
Sharad Pawar said Mamata Banerjee was a prominent leader of the country.
“Yes, certainly (she is capable of leading the alliance). She is a prominent leader of this nation… she has that capability. The elected leaders she sent to Parliament are responsible, dutiful, and well-aware people. Therefore, she has the right to say so,” he said.
Omar Abdullah had earlier said that Mamata Banerjee should stake claim in an INDIA bloc meeting if she wants leadership of the alliance.
“There has been no meeting of the INDIA Bloc after the Lok Sabha elections, so the question of change of leadership does not arise. Let there be a meeting and let Mamata Banerjee claim the leadership if she wants… There would be discussion on it,” he had said. (ANI)
