Former Members of Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu & Kashmir Launches New Political Party

Jamaat-e-Islami

In a major political development, Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu & Kashmir (JeI) has officially launched a new political party named The Justice and Development Front. The announcement was made today at the party’s headquarters in Nowgam, Srinagar, marking what leaders described as “a new beginning dedicated to justice, progress, and empowerment.”

Party representatives highlighted that the formation of the Justice and Development Front comes after careful deliberations on the political aspirations and needs of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at the launch event, leaders expressed their vision to work towards a future that ensures social justice, economic progress, and protection of fundamental rights for all citizens.

“Today is not just the launch of a new political party; it is the launch of a new hope for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” said one of the senior members at the event. They emphasised that the Front aims to bridge the gap between governance and the grassroots, focusing on issues such as education, healthcare, youth employment, and community empowerment.

The newly formed party pledged to maintain a non-violent and democratic approach in its political activities, firmly rooting its ideology in peaceful progress and constructive dialogue. Leaders also stressed that the Justice and Development Front would strive to unite communities and build a strong, resilient society based on equality and fairness.

The launch of this new political entity comes at a time when Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape is undergoing significant changes. Observers believe that the Justice and Development Front could offer a fresh option to the electorate, especially among young voters looking for development-driven leadership.

As the Justice and Development Front begins its journey, it has called upon the people to join hands for a brighter, stronger, and more just future for Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah Slams Indus Water Treaty as ‘Unfair’; India Moves to Amend Pact After Pahalgam Attack

omar abdullah

Expressing strong disapproval over the Indus Water Treaty, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said the pact which was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 is the “most unfair document” to the people of the Union Territory.

Addressing the media, Omar Abdullah said, “The government of India has taken some steps. As far as J-K is concerned, we have never been in favour of the Indus Water Treaty. We have always believed that the Indus Water Treaty has been the most unfair document to the people of J-K.”

Chief Minister also discussed assurances received from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the safety of J-K residents in other states.

“It is regrettable that this attack took place and we ensured that whatever issues that were kept in front of us in the meeting, we will work on them. During this meeting, I spoke with the Union Home Minister and he assured me that all steps will be taken to ensure the safety of the people of J-K who are staying in other states…An advisory will be issued by the Home Ministry and the Union Minister also spoke with the Chief Ministers of many states,” he added.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will hold a meeting regarding the Indus Water Treaty at his residence in the national capital on Friday evening.

Besides the Home Minister and the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, CR Paatil, other senior government officials will attend this meeting.

Sources told ANI, “India has formally notified Pakistan in writing about the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty.”

Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti, as informed the Secretary of Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources, Syed Ali Murtaza, about this decision of the Indian government through a letter. India has issued a notice for changes in the treaty. The letter states that the Indian government has given notice to the Pakistani government for amendments to the treaty.

This decision was made at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) held on April 23, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.

This comes after terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 22, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen while leaving several others injured. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi to Visit Kashmir Friday After Pahalgam Horror

Rahul Gandhi

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will visit Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday, following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

Rahul Gandhi, who was on an official visit to the United States, cut his trip short and returned to New Delhi early Thursday morning.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also shortened their trips to Saudi Arabia and the US, respectively, in response to the attack in Pahalgam.

Earlier in the day, the Central government convened an all-party meeting to deliberate on the security situation and formulate a collective response to the attack.

Following the attack, India has taken strong countermeasures against Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.

In the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, India decided to hold the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism and has closed the integrated Attari Check Post.

India has also declared the officials of the Pakistani High Commission persona non grata and ordered them to leave India within a week. The country further decided to cancel any visas provided under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) and ordered Pakistan to leave the country within 48 hours.

The Government of India has also decided to suspend visa services for Pakistani nationals, effective immediately. All existing valid visas issued by India to Pakistani nationals will stand revoked, effective from 27 April 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs stated in a press release.

Meanwhile, families of victims of the Pahalgam terror attack mourned the loss of their loved ones as they urged the government to take strong action against the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

Last rites of Indian Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who was killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, were performed at his native place in Karnal. Shivamogga resident Manjunath Rao was killed in the terror attack. Family friend Dattatreya urged the government to take strong steps against terrorists.

Terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen while leaving several others injured, in one of the deadliest attacks in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed. (ANI)

Mehbooba Mufti Questions Farooq Abdullah’s Role in Article 370 Abrogation, Seeks Clarity from NC,Dulat’s Remarks About Late Mufti Not Significant

Mehbooba Mufti Questions

In a significant political development, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has raised serious questions about the role of Dr. Farooq Abdullah, president of the National Conference (NC), in the events leading up to the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Speaking at a press conference at the PDP headquarters, Mehbooba urged the NC leadership to publicly clarify their position in light of revelations made by former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief A. S. Dulat.

A.S. Dulat’s Revelations Spark Controversy

A.S. Dulat, a former intelligence chief known for his close association with Dr. Farooq Abdullah, recently claimed that the senior NC leader was disturbed not because of the abrogation of Article 370 itself, but because the BJP did not take him into confidence before executing the move. According to Dulat, Farooq had even suggested that he could have helped the BJP accomplish their objective of removing Article 370 through the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

These revelations have stirred political debate in the Union Territory, with Mehbooba Mufti terming Dulat’s claims “very serious in nature” and a matter that deserves public explanation. “Dulat is not someone who would say such things to harm Farooq Sahib’s interests. He is close to him. What he has said seems more like an attempt to bridge the gap between the BJP and Farooq Sahib,” she stated.

Mehbooba Dismisses Comparisons to Her Father

Mehbooba also responded to comments made by NC vice president Omar Abdullah, who had earlier tried to equate Dulat’s remarks about Dr. Farooq with his past comments on the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Mehbooba’s father and PDP founder. She dismissed these comparisons, saying the remarks about her father were “minor issues,” whereas the claim involving Dr. Farooq and Article 370 touches the very core of Jammu and Kashmir’s political identity.

“Article 370 was the soul of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, and any suggestion that a prominent Kashmiri leader was willing to collaborate in its removal is extremely serious,” Mehbooba said.

Demands for Public Accountability

During the press interaction, Mehbooba demanded that the National Conference and its leadership come forward and clarify what role, if any, Dr. Farooq and Omar Abdullah played in the lead-up to the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019. She questioned their presence at a meeting with the Prime Minister just two days prior, on August 3, 2019, and demanded transparency on what transpired.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve to know the truth. What were Farooq and Omar Sahib doing with the Prime Minister two days before the abrogation? Why is there silence from the NC on such a critical issue?” she asked.

Concerns Over Statehood Narrative

Mehbooba further criticised the National Conference for aligning, knowingly or unknowingly, with what she termed the “BJP narrative” on statehood. “It’s the BJP that promised the return of statehood. Even the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister have committed to it. But what has not been promised, what is being ignored, is Article 370. That’s what matters the most,” she said.

She expressed disappointment that the NC, which once held 50 seats in the legislative assembly, is no longer pushing for the restoration of Article 370. “We had hoped they would take a firm stand, but they have avoided even mentioning it. This silence is troubling,” Mehbooba added.

Political Implications

Mehbooba Mufti’s pointed remarks come at a time when political activity in Jammu and Kashmir is gradually gaining momentum amid ongoing legal and administrative battles. Her statement also reflects growing unease among regional parties over the BJP’s policies and the perceived shift in priorities among former allies and political opponents.

The controversy surrounding A.S. Dulat’s comments has opened up a new front in the political discourse, one that could redefine alliances and narratives as the region awaits clarity on its future status and governance structure.

Conclusion

By questioning Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s alleged willingness to assist the BJP in removing Article 370, Mehbooba Mufti has thrown a spotlight on a politically sensitive issue that continues to shape the politics of Jammu and Kashmir. Her demand for transparency and accountability may force the National Conference to break its silence, as political parties prepare for the next phase in the region’s ongoing struggle for identity, rights, and representation.

Congress Seeks Immediate Restoration of Jammu & Kashmir Statehood

Congress

Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain on Friday questioned the “continuing delay” in restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

“We had always said statehood must be restored. Now that the government is in place, why is there a delay? We have already protested, and we will continue to fight for Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood,” said Hussain while reiterating the Congress party’s long-standing stance.

Hussain also stated that the Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore statehood in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rajya Sabha MP pointed out the gap between official statements and ground realities over the terrorism incidents in the Union Territory.

“In Parliament, the government claims terrorism is under control, but infiltration attempts continue, and 50 people have died. Terrorism, especially in the Jammu region, is increasing,” Hussain said.

In August 2019, the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, repealed Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, effectively ending the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday criticised former RAW Chief Amarjit Singh Dulat’s recent book, which has sparked controversy over its portrayal of Dr Farooq Abdullah.

Omar Abdullah criticised Dulat, saying he prioritises selling books over truth and humiliated Farooq Abdullah in his latest book, “The Chief Minister and the Spy.”

“To sell his book, it is Dulat sahib’s habit not to go with the truth. In his first book, he spared no one, and in this book, he left no stone unturned to humiliate Farooq sahib. It is said that when you have friends like this, there is no need for enemies. Finally, Farooq sahib has found out the truth about Dulat sahib,” he said.

The book’s contents have sparked debate, with some opposition parties interpreting it as revealing hidden political negotiations. Dulat, however, dismisses claims that Farooq Abdullah privately backed the Centre’s move to abrogate Article 370, calling such reports “absolutely misquoted”. (ANI)

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Implement Waqf Amendment Act

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a defiant stand against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act, announcing that her government will not implement the controversial legislation in the state. The declaration, made during a program organized by the Jain community in Kolkata on Wednesday, has ignited a fierce political debate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing her of vote-bank politics and failing to maintain law and order amid violent protests in the state.

Mamata’s Stand: A Defense of Minority Rights

Addressing the gathering, Banerjee emphasized her commitment to protecting minority communities and their properties, stating, “I will protect the minority people and their property. I know you are unhappy with the implementation of the Waqf Act. But have faith—nothing will happen in Bengal that will allow anyone to divide and rule.” She framed her rejection of the Act as a resistance to what she perceives as a divisive agenda by the BJP-led central government.

Banerjee also drew parallels with the unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, cautioning against similar instability in West Bengal. “Look at the situation in Bangladesh. The Waqf Amendment Bill should not have been passed now,” she remarked, suggesting that the timing of the legislation was ill-considered and provocative.

The Chief Minister’s announcement comes on the heels of violent protests in Murshidabad’s Jangipur area, where demonstrators clashed with police, set fire to vehicles, and pelted stones in opposition to the Act. Banerjee sought to calm tensions, urging unity and assuring minorities that her administration would safeguard their interests.

The Waqf Amendment Act: A Polarizing Legislation

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which received presidential assent from Draupadi Murmu on Saturday after being passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday and the Rajya Sabha on Friday, introduces significant changes to the management of Waqf properties—lands dedicated under Islamic law for religious, educational, or charitable purposes. The central government has defended the law, arguing that it will enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the functioning of Waqf Boards while reducing land-related disputes.

However, critics, including Banerjee and other opposition leaders, have condemned the Act as an overreach into religious affairs and an attempt to target the Muslim community. A particularly contentious provision allows non-Muslims to participate in reviewing Waqf activities, a move that has drawn sharp criticism for undermining the autonomy of religious institutions.

Political Backlash and Escalating Tensions

The BJP wasted no time in slamming Banerjee’s decision. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, accused the state government of indulging in “vote bank politics” and failing to curb the violence in Murshidabad. In a post on X, Adhikari shared a video allegedly showing protesters burning public property and police vehicles, claiming that “anti-social elements” were spreading anarchy under the guise of dissent. He called for the deployment of central forces and urged the Union Home Ministry to intervene.

BJP leader Amit Malviya echoed Adhikari’s sentiments, criticizing Banerjee for “going silent” during the unrest and accusing her of suppressing the truth. The party has argued that the violence reflects a broader failure of law and order under her leadership, with Malviya citing prohibitory orders imposed by the Murshidabad District Magistrate under Section 163 of the BNSS, banning gatherings of five or more people for 48 hours.

In response, Banerjee’s supporters within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have portrayed her stance as a principled defense of constitutional values and minority rights. The TMC has long positioned itself as a counterweight to the BJP’s alleged majoritarian policies, and Banerjee’s rejection of the Waqf Amendment Act aligns with this narrative.

Legal and Constitutional Implications

Banerjee’s declaration raises questions about the legal feasibility of her stance. Under India’s federal structure, laws passed by Parliament on matters in the Concurrent List—such as the Waqf Act—are binding on all states. While states can resist implementation through non-cooperation or challenge the law in courts, outright refusal to comply could invite legal and political repercussions. The TMC has hinted at exploring a Supreme Court challenge, a route also being considered by other opposition parties like the Congress.

The Congress, while opposing the bill in Parliament, has distanced itself from Banerjee’s unilateral approach. Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, speaking in Ahmedabad, clarified that Banerjee’s position was her “personal view,” though he reiterated the party’s broader opposition to the legislation.

Protests and Security Measures

The unrest in Murshidabad has underscored the polarizing impact of the Waqf Amendment Act. Clashes between protesters and police in Jangipur have prompted heightened security measures, with authorities tightening arrangements in the area. The violence, which saw railway tracks blocked and public property damaged, has fueled the BJP’s narrative of administrative collapse, while Banerjee’s administration has accused opposition forces of instigating trouble.

A Broader Political Battle

Banerjee’s rejection of the Waqf Amendment Act is more than a policy disagreement—it’s a salvo in the escalating war of words between the TMC and BJP ahead of West Bengal’s assembly elections next year. The TMC has vowed to nullify the Act if a non-BJP government comes to power at the center, a promise Banerjee reiterated earlier this month. “When a new government is formed after ousting the current regime, we will bring a new amendment to nullify this Waqf Bill brought by the BJP,” she had said on April 3.

For the BJP, the issue is an opportunity to rally its base by accusing Banerjee of appeasement and portraying her government as soft on lawlessness. The party’s leaders have repeatedly framed the protests as evidence of radical elements gaining ground in West Bengal, drawing comparisons to recent upheavals in Bangladesh.

Conclusion

Mamata Banerjee’s rejection of the Waqf Amendment Act has thrust West Bengal into the center of a national controversy, pitting her against the BJP in a high-stakes battle over identity, governance, and federal authority. As protests simmer and legal questions loom, the standoff is likely to reverberate beyond the state, shaping the discourse around minority rights and religious autonomy in India. For now, Banerjee remains steadfast, casting herself as a protector of minorities against what she calls a “divide and rule” policy—a stance that promises to keep West Bengal’s political cauldron boiling in the months ahead.

NC-Led Alliance Passes Resolutions Urging Centre to Respect J&K’s Democratic Mandate

NC-Led Alliance

The ruling National Conference (NC) and its alliance partners convened a legislative party meeting in Srinagar on Friday, where they passed two significant resolutions, calling on the central government to respect the democratic mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The nearly two-hour-long meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, was held at the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary in Gupkar. National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah, cabinet ministers, all NC MLAs, four Congress legislators led by Chief Whip Nizamuddin Bhat, and independent lawmakers who support the government, were present.

The meeting comes amid growing tensions between the Raj Bhawan and the six-month-old NC-led government, especially after recent administrative decisions taken by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The meeting also assumes importance ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir starting April 6.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, NC Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq announced that two resolutions had been unanimously passed. The first resolution strongly rejected the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2025, calling it discriminatory and against the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The second resolution urged the BJP-led central government to respect the democratic will of the people, an apparent reference to the recent administrative decisions made by the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
“We want to run the government with love and respect. But our silence should not be seen as our weakness,” Tanvir Sadiq said. “We are coordinating with the LG administration and the Government of India, but we will not tolerate any unjust or one-sided decisions. Don’t push us to the wall.”
He further said that the alliance remains united in defending the rights and aspirations of the people and will continue to engage constructively with the administration.
Congress leader and MLA Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat, who also attended the meeting, said that all lawmakers are united and fully support the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“We met to discuss both political and administrative matters that impact the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Bhat said.
He added that both long-term and short-term issues were discussed.
Bhat informed that two senior Congress leaders could not attend the meeting as they were preparing for another important meeting in Delhi. “They asked me to represent the party on their behalf,” Bhat said.
He further added that matters related to the Waqf Board, the need for a people-driven government, and public sentiments were discussed in detail. “We want to make it clear that even though some forces may try to disturb peace, we are united to protect democracy,” he said.
Calling the legislature a strong and credible institution that holds the people’s mandate, Bhat urged all political parties to stand together in maintaining peace and working for the development of Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress Leadership Meets DCC Presidents to Strengthen Grassroots Organisation in Jammu & Kashmir

Congress Leadership

A landmark meeting of District Congress Committee (DCC) Presidents was held at the AICC headquarters, Indira Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Congress President Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Mr. Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders.

During the session, Mr.Mallikarjun Kharge and Mr.Rahul Gandhi addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of strengthening the Congress organization at the district level. They emphasized that a robust and active grassroots structure is crucial for the party’s future success and public outreach.

In a separate consultative session, the Jammu & Kashmir Congress leadership, including all DCC Presidents, met with AICC J&K Incharge General Secretary Mr. Nasir, JKPCC President Mr. Tariq Hameed Karra, senior leader and former JKPCC President Mr. Ghulam Ahmad Mir and other key office bearers. The meeting was seen as a pivotal step toward party reorganization in the Union Territory.

Discussions focused on the current political scenario in J&K, strategies for strengthening the party at the grassroots, addressing public issues, and outlining a roadmap for the future.

A major decision during the meetings was to grant greater autonomy to District Presidents in appointing and reshuffling local office bearers. This move is part of a wider decentralization initiative aimed at revitalizing the party’s grassroots leadership.

District Congress Committee President Bandipora, Mr. Mushtaq Tantary, who actively participated in the meetings, expressed gratitude for being part of the important deliberations. “This historic gathering will certainly infuse a new spirit of dedication and hard work among all of us. It’s an honor to be part of this new chapter in the Congress party’s journey,” he said.

The Congress leadership reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the party’s presence and performance across Jammu & Kashmir through collective vision, strategic planning and grassroots empowerment.

NC-Led Alliance Warns Centre to Respect Mandate, Opposes Waqf Bill and LG’s Officer Transfers

Alliance Warns Centre

For the ‘last time,’ the National Conference (NC) led ruling alliance on Friday warned New Delhi against pushing them to the wall, urging the Centre to respect the mandate of the elected government.

The warning came after a two-hour closed-door meeting of NC legislators and its key allies, including Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and independents. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah alongside NC president Farooq Abdullah, came amid the brewing standoff with the Raj Bhawan over the transfer of 48 middle-rung officers in Jammu and Kashmir.

The legislators discussed a range of pressing issues, including key restoration of statehood and the Waqf bill, besides the delay in clearance of Business Rules by the Home Ministry.

Addressing a hurried presser after the meeting, National Conference Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, alongside Congress legislator Nizamudin Bhat, said the alliance has passed two resolutions, including opposing the Waqf amendment bill and demanding the central government to respect the people’s democratic mandate.

“This Waqf Bill is against Muslims and minorities in the country. We oppose it,” he said. “Another critical issue was the mandate given by the people of Jammu and Kashmir to the NC-led government. We once again reiterate that the Government of India respects the mandate. It is non-negotiable,” said Sadiq.

The draft rules meant for the demarcation of powers between Raj Bhawan and the elected government have been pending with the Home Ministry since March, with the government expecting these rules to remove the faceoff like the one over the transfer of 48 middle-rung officers this week.

“We are making this appeal for the last time not as a request but as a firm warning. Do not push us to the wall and respect the people’s mandate, which the Prime Minister and Home Minister always praise,” said Sadiq, who is an NC MLA from Srinagar’s Zadibal.

Also, he said they saw the Waqf Amendment bill passed by the Parliament as a direct attack on Muslims and their faith in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Our coordination with the Lieutenant Governor and New Delhi should not be misinterpreted. We are trying to maintain dignity in governance, but that should not be taken as a sign of political weakness or submission,” Sadiq added.

The second stint of the J&K Assembly session will begin in Jammu next week, with the Alliance supporting two resolutions, including one for pressing the Centre for restoration of statehood to J&K and another opposing the controversial Waqf Amendment bill to be moved in the House.

Interestingly, National Conference legislator and the chief minister’s close aide Tanvir Sadiq has also moved a private member’s bill in the Assembly against the Waqf Amendment bill passed in the Parliament.

Though it could not be officially confirmed, it is expected that the session might be extended to accommodate discussions on these issues.

On Wednesday, the Chief Minister sent letters to the Home Minister and the J&K Chief Secretary regarding the bypassing of the ‘competent authority,’ which is the Chief Minister himself, in the transfer of officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services. Their transfer, according to the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019, falls within the ambit of the Chief Minister. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, however, oversees the All India Services.

Aga Ruhullah Mehdi Slams Waqf Bill as State-Sponsored Dispossession of Muslims

Aga Ruhullah

Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, has strongly condemned the recently passed Waqf Bill, calling it an act of “state-sponsored dispossession” against Muslims in India.

In a statement issued on April 4, Mehdi accused the ruling RSS-BJP government of reaffirming its “anti-Muslim and anti-minority intent” by passing the Bill in what he described as “the den of the night.” He argued that a party without a single Muslim MP has “no moral or political right” to speak for Muslims.

He further criticized the proceedings in Parliament, stating that as a Kashmiri Muslim voice, he was denied the opportunity to speak.

He blamed the floor leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) for monopolizing the discussion, leaving no space for his intervention. Mehdi described this as “structural marginalization,” which, he said, had caused deep anguish among his constituents.

Expressing concerns over the impact of the legislation, Mehdi stated that taking away Waqf autonomy, abolishing “Waqf by user,” and allowing land grabbers to claim Muslim properties amounted to targeted displacement.

“My fight against this belligerent and bigoted attack on Muslims will continue to grow stronger,” he affirmed. (KNS

Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 Sparks Political Clash Over Religious Control: MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone

Sajad Lone

Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference President and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, stated on Wednesday that the state should not interfere with religion and that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is a matter of religion.

“The Waqf property is collectively owned by the Muslims of the country. It is the right of the Muslims to decide on these (properties) by using their institutions and systems. The state should not have any interference with the religion. We do not advocate with any religion and neither with our religion. It is gross interference. It is our matter,” Lone told ANI.

“It is a matter of our religion,” he asserted, adding “We do not know what are they (Central government) are up to? Who are they looking to appease?”

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill and lashed out at the BJP, stating that a party which do not have a single Muslim MP in the Lok Sabha is ironically going to protect the rights of the minorities.

Speaking during a discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, DMK MP A Raja said, “The irony is that the rights of the minorities are going to be protected by a party which has no member of a Muslim community.”

“Today, it is a remarkable day for the Indian Parliament to decide our destiny whether this secular country is going to travel in the path which was well written by the forefathers of the Constitution or a negative path decided by the communal forces in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, introducing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju questioned why Waqf properties haven’t been used to develop the nation and Muslims. There is no Muslim MP to introduce the Bill. They are not able to produce as single member of Muslim community and they are giving morals as how secularism can be protected.”

Rijiju said that India has the highest number of Waqf properties in the world and questioned why they haven’t been used for the education, medical treatment, skill development, and income generation of poor Muslims.

“When our country has the largest Waqf property in the world, why hasn’t it been used for the education, medical treatment, skill development, and income generation of poor Muslims? Why has no progress been made in this regard so far?” Rijiju said in Lok Sabha.

Rijiju also questioned the Opposition’s objections to the PM Modi-led government working for the betterment of Muslims.

Rijiju also noted that the number of Waqf properties has doubled in the country, and their income has also increased.

Along with the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Rijiju also moved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, for consideration and passing in the Lok Sabha.

The bill was earlier presented in the Lok Sabha last August, and a Joint Parliamentary Committee, headed by BJP member Jagdambika Pal, had examined it.

The bill seeks to amend the Act of 1995, and improve the administration and management of Waqf properties in India. It aims to overcome the shortcomings of the previous act and enhance the efficiency of Waqf boards, improving the registration process and increasing the role of technology in managing Waqf records. Waqf Amendment Bill 2025: Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari Warns of Community Losing Control

Altaf Bukhari

As the Union government tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, for discussions and passage on Wednesday, Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said that if the bill is passed, it will deprive the Muslim community of control over Waqf assets as well as their administration.

He strongly opposed the controversial amendments to the existing law (Waqf Act, 1995) and stated that the ongoing legislation is completely unnecessary.

In his statement, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said, “The government claims that this amendment bill is intended to improve the administration of Waqf properties and ensure transparency. No one opposes measures for better management and transparency, but such legislation is not necessary. Improvement and transparency can be achieved without amending the existing Waqf Act.”

He added, “Once the Waqf Amendment Bill is passed, Waqf boards will be required to register their properties with district collectors to ensure accurate valuation. Additionally, all members of the Waqf board will be appointed by the government. Clearly, once the bill becomes law, the community will lose control over Waqf boards, allowing the government to take over their administration—an outright interference in the religious affairs of the Muslim community.”

NC to Oppose Waqf Amendment Bill, Confident JD(U) & TDP Will Join Opposition

Waqf Amendment Bill

National Conference (NC) MLA Abdul Majeed Larmi on Tuesday said that NC MPs will oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill during voting in Parliament, following directions from party president Omar Abdullah.

Larmi expressed confidence that other parties, including those led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, will also oppose the bill.

“CM Omar Abdullah has already directed NC MPs to participate in the voting and oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill.

I am sure that JD(U) and TDP will also stand against it,” Larmi said.

The bill has sparked debate across political circles, with several opposition parties raising concerns over its implications. The NC has been vocal about protecting the interests of Waqf properties and ensuring transparency in their management.(KNS)

MLA Altaf Kaloo

The Speaker of J&K Legislative Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather on Tuesday snubbed MLA Altaf Kaloo when he objected to raising of supplementary questions by a legislator.

As BJP’s Balwant Mankotia tried to raise supplementary questions, Kaloo objected to it, evoking a sharp retort from Rather.“Don’t teach me,” the Speaker told the NC lawmaker.

The Speaker rebuked Kaloo when the minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Javaid Dar was responding to questions on behalf of Minister for Education Sakina Ittoo—(KNO)

Iltija Mufti Criticises Police Over Kathua Killings, Demands Impartial Probe

Iltija Mufti

People’s Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti on Monday criticised the police handling of the recent killing of three civilians in Kathua, including a 14-year-old boy and demanded an impartial probe into the incident.

Mufti expressed concern that the police are not behaving neutrally, citing the fact that BJP leaders were allowed to visit Billawar in the Kathua district of J-K while she and her team were denied permission.

“We wanted to visit Billawar, but the leaders of BJP were allowed to go. We are worried that the police are not behaving in a neutral way. The youngest victim is a 14-year-old. We demand an impartial probe,” said the PDP leader.

Mufti’s comments come after she was denied permission to visit the affected area while BJP leaders were allowed to go.

Despite police claims of normalcy, Mufti pointed out that the incident raises concerns about the police’s ability to perform their duties.

“Police here is stating that everything is normal. If everything is normal here, then how are such big incidents taking place here, ” Mufti told reporters, referring to the killing of three youths.

She also referred to her previous month’s visit to the Billawar, a town in the Kathua district, stating that “people had fear and fear of police more than the militants”. I am not saying that everyone has a bad name among the police…If such incidents are taking place here, it is a border district”.

Sajad Lone Walks Out of Assembly Over Disallowance of Issues Like Article 370, Police Verification, and 1987 Rigging

Sajad Lone Walks Out

Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, police verification, and the shifting back of detainees lodged in jails outside J&K.

Peoples Conference president and MLA Handwara, Sajad Gani Lone, on Tuesday staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, police verification, and the shifting back of detainees lodged in jails outside J&K.

After the question hour ended, Lone stood up and questioned Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather over the disallowing of his amendments regarding Article 370, a probe into the rigging of the 1987 election, and PSA detentions.

The Speaker said that they had been disallowed under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

Lone had submitted seven amendments to the LG’s address; however, only two were allowed. In his amendments, Lone had submitted that there was no mention of Article 370, doing away with the existing police verification system, and a probe into the rigging of the 1987 polls in the LG’s address. Lone said that there was no mention of Article 370 in the resolution passed in the J&K Assembly in the last session.

“We are victims of police verification, and the rules are very stringent. I am myself a victim. Nobody should be punished for what their kins have done. We cannot keep quiet on these issues,” he said.

Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat supported Lone’s argument that police verification should be discussed and debated in the House. “You should have kept the repeal of PSA in the LG’s address if you had an intention,” Lone said. To this, the Speaker said that these matters pertain to the Ministry of Home Affairs. “It cannot be done unless the state is restored,” he said.

Angered by the Speaker’s refusal to allow the amendments to the LG’s address, Lone staged a walkout from the House—(KNO)

Addressing the gathering Tara Chand talked of the role of Congress in uniting people and uplifting the downtrodden as a result the dalits occupied prime positions in the government and services due to reservation in the constitution while urging to safeguard the constitution.

BJP Criticizes Waleed Karra’s Presence at Government Meeting, Calls it Political Nepotism

Waleed Karra

BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir spokesman Altaf Thakur today strongly criticized the presence of Waleed Karra, son of MLA Tariq Hamid Karra, at a high-level government review meeting in Srinagar, calling it a “blatant example of political nepotism” and a “gross violation of democratic norms.”

Thakur questioned how an unelected individual was allowed to participate in an official meeting meant for elected representatives and senior bureaucrats. “How was Waleed Karra permitted to sit in a high-level review meeting? Who authorized his presence? Why did no one object to this clear breach of protocol?” he asked.

The BJP leader accused certain politicians in Jammu and Kashmir of treating governance as their “family fiefdom,” undermining transparency and accountability. He demanded an immediate clarification from the government and urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take strict action.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve a transparent and accountable administration, not dynastic rule by proxy,” Thakur asserted, warning that such incidents erode public trust and make a mockery of governance.

With a viral video also shining Waleed Karra inspecting a health facility, the controversy has sparked fresh debate over political favoritism and dynastic politics in the region. The government has yet to respond to the BJP’s accusations
