Mehbooba Mufti Supports Protesters Against Proposed Vaishno Devi Ropeway Project, Urges Review to Protect Local Livelihoods

Sangarsh Samiti Protesters

Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today met members of the Maa Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti and other stakeholders in Katra, who have been protesting against the proposed ropeway project to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

The protesters conveyed their deep concerns about the project’s potential to adversely impact the livelihoods of thousands of local shopkeepers, laborers, pony operators, and others who depend on the traditional pilgrimage route.

During the meeting, the protesters expressed fears that the ropeway would significantly reduce foot traffic along the established paths, directly affecting the businesses and livelihoods of those who have served pilgrims for generations. They emphasized that the project threatens the economic lifeline of many families and could fundamentally alter the pilgrimage experience.

Mehbooba Mufti voiced her support for the protesters, stating, “There is a growing and worrying trend of converting sacred pilgrimage sites into commercial tourist attractions. Such decisions risk undermining the spiritual sanctity of these places and alienating the communities that have nurtured and preserved their traditions for centuries.”

She called upon the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, who heads the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, to immediately review the decision and engage with stakeholders to find an alternative that safeguards the livelihoods of local residents and respects the sentiments of devotees.

Mehbooba Mufti underscored the need for development that aligns with the welfare of the local population and preserves the spiritual essence of the shrine. She added, “Pilgrimage is not merely a tourism activity; it is a deeply personal and spiritual journey. Commercial interests must not overshadow the sanctity of such revered sites.”

The Maa Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti expressed hope that their concerns would be addressed through dialogue and that the authorities would prioritize the welfare of the affected community while considering any development plans. They reiterated their readiness to support alternative initiatives that balance economic growth with the preservation of the shrine’s heritage.

The issue has sparked widespread attention, with the local community and devotees urging the Shrine Board to reconsider the project in light of its socio-economic and cultural implications. Mehbooba Mufti’s visit has further amplified their voices, as they await a timely resolution to their grievances.

Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi Critiques Centre’s Response on Convoy Movement and Civilian Harassment, Videos Show Ambulances Stopped For Convoy Movement In Kashmir

Srinagar MP Ruhullah

Srinagar Lok Sabha member Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday said the response of the Centre to his question in Parliament over the “harassment” of people on the national highway during the convoy movement of the security forces was “full of blatant lies”.

“I asked government of India to stop the harassment of people and blockading of traffic, including ambulances on Srinagar-Jammu national highway during the convoy movement of the security forces This is their response — full of blatant lies,” Mehdi said in a post on X.

He posted the Centre’s response to his questions as well as some photos and videos purportedly showing ambulances being stopped during the convoy movement on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.“Also sharing some video evidence in the thread to expose their lies,” he said.

The MP had asked the defence minister to state whether it is a fact that the traffic on the highway is stopped multiple times at multiple places at every few kilometres for the Army or paramilitary movement on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. He had asked whether it is also a fact that not only normal traffic but the ambulances are also stopped by the security forces.

The Srinagar MP also asked the minister what steps were taken or were proposed to be taken by the government to stop this “humiliating practice” which also “violates” the human rights.

In the written answer, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Sethi said as part of drill, regular movement of conveys takes place between Jammu and Srinagar for various operational as well as administrative reasons.

“The Indian Army follows detailed procedures for the movement of convoys with due emphasis on friendly move of the populace. Owing to security reasons and to thwart incidents like attack/ambush of convey in past, Road Opening Parties are sent out prior to the movement of any Security Forces Convoy,” the minister said.

The government said traffic is regulated, temporarily, particularly at points where laterals meet the NH 44 and at U-turn during the movement of the Army or Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) convoys.

“The Indian Army does not harass or stop any civil movement on the National Highway. The charter of civilian traffic regulation is of the state authorities or Jammu and Kashmir Police.“Ambulances are always accorded priority for movement and they are not stopped anywhere by the Security Forces,” the minister added.

Sajad Lone Criticises Ajmer Sharif Survey, Calls for Focus on Progress Over Regression

Sajad Lone

J&K Peoples Conference President and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone has expressed strong disapproval of a recent court order permitting the survey of most revered Sufi shrine, Ajmer Sharif, in search of remnants of an ancient Hindu temple.

In an official statement, Lone criticized the misplaced priorities and growing regression in Indian society. “Yet another shocker,” he remarked, referring to the suit seeking a temple “supposedly hidden somewhere in the Ajmer Dargah Sharif.”

He emphasized that as 2024 approaches, marking the dawn of the Artificial Intelligence era, society has regrettably chosen the path of regression.

“And as Indians, let us be honest — we have not contributed to any technological revolution. Yes, we have the resources to make use of them by buying, but scientific innovation? No. None. Not even remotely,” he lamented.

Lone further expressed concern that the nation’s focus appears entirely consumed by an obsession with uncovering hidden temples. “And make no mistakes, a statistically significant section of the population is applauding it,” he said.

“And yes, the more educated, the more temple-searchers they tend to be. Those educated ones who should have been at the forefront of heralding the Indian tech revolution are busy mythologizing,” he added.

Reflecting on a recent visit to Dubai, Lone praised the UAE’s spirit of tolerance and evolution.

“I was recently in Dubai and saw the magnificence of the temples built there. What an oasis of tolerance and mutual respect Dubai has become. Every nationality lives there in an orderly manner. I was in Dubai in the late nineties — what an evolution. They truly deserve to be proud of their transformation into excellence,” he said.

Disheartened by the regression back home, Lone remarked, “Looking back at my own country… How we have regressed. The electoral victories have come at a cost, which have left this country soulless. This country, once defined by its soulfulness, is tragically now soulless and in search of a soul,” he added.

He emphasized that Ajmer’s spiritual and inclusive legacy represents spirituality at its finest, serving as a destination where people of all faiths converge, irrespective of religion, caste, or creed, with a unique belief in the spiritual deliverance offered by this great seat of spirituality.

Turning to Kashmir’s ideological struggles, he noted that clear demarcations existed between moderate ideology and extremism, even within the separatist camp.

“Thousands of lives were lost in the battle between moderates and extremists. Yet the moderates did not surrender. And moderates, inshallah, will never surrender,” he said.

In conclusion, Lone reiterated his faith in the enduring power of tolerance and mutual respect: “The ideology of moderation, tolerance, and mutual respect will prevail.”

Political Battle Heats Up in Jammu and Kashmir Ahead of Panchayat Elections

Panchayat Elections

After the successful completion of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, political activities are intensifying in preparation for the Panchayat elections.
The 2018 Panchayat elections saw boycotts from major parties like the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). While the elections were officially apolitical, the influence of political support was evident. This time, with NC emerging as the largest party in the Assembly elections, securing 42 seats, a fierce contest is expected between NC and the opposition parties—BJP, Congress, and PDP.
In 2018, voting was conducted in nine phases. The Jammu division recorded an impressive voter turnout of 83.5%, while the Kashmir division lagged at 44.4%. Overall, voter participation stood at 74%. Post-Assembly election victory, NC has shifted its focus to making inroads in Jammu, where the BJP’s dominance had limited its success in the Assembly elections.
Determined to bridge gaps, NC is actively engaging with voters in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. Divisional president Rattan Lal Gupta affirmed the party’s commitment to serving people across regions equally, stating, “We will connect more people with our policies to ensure a strong performance in the upcoming Panchayat elections.”
On the other hand, BJP is prioritising an aggressive membership campaign. State president Sat Sharma expressed confidence in increasing the party’s vote share, adding, “Our top leadership and grassroots workers are united to achieve greater success.”
Furthermore, the Congress party is focusing on introspection and organizational restructuring. State president Tariq Hameed Karra highlighted the role of a fact-checking committee in identifying weaknesses from the Assembly polls, aiming to present fresh faces for better performance.
With over 65 lakh voters eligible to participate, 4,291 Panchayats and 33,597 Panch seats will be contested. The region-wise distribution of Panchayats underscores the administrative scale of the elections. Key districts in Jammu division include Jammu (305 Panchayats), Rajouri (312), and Kathua (257). In Kashmir, Baramulla leads with 402 Panchayats, followed by Anantnag (335) and Kupwara (385).
The State Election Commission is revising the voter list for 2025. Special camps are scheduled on November 23-24, November 30, and December 1 to address additions, deletions, and corrections. The final voter list will be published on January 6, 2025. Meanwhile, the OBC Commission is actively working on reservations—(KNO)

Awami Itehad Party Urges Government of India to Release Er Rashid Ahead of Parliament Session

er rashid

Awami Itehad Party (AIP) has made a fervent appeal to the Government of India (GoI) to release Party President Er. Rashid, the Member of Parliament from North Kashmir, ahead of the upcoming Parliament session scheduled to begin on November 25.

AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi emphasized that Er. Rashid’s electoral victory in 2024, achieved despite his continued incarceration in Tihar Jail since 2019, is a testament to the overwhelming trust and mandate he enjoys among the people of North Kashmir.

He highlighted that Er. Rashid’s win marks a significant moment in the democratic process, as it reflects the voice of those who continue to believe in his leadership and vision despite adverse circumstances.

“It has been the desire of the people of North Kashmir since 2019 that their issues should be represented by Er. Rashid in Parliament. Though he came close to victory in 2019, securing the second position, he made history in 2024 by winning from Tihar Jail.

This mandate is not just symbolic but a clear expression of the people’s will. The Government of India must respect this democratic mandate by ensuring his release before the commencement of the Parliament session,” said Inam Un Nabi.

The AIP Chief spokesperson further pointed out that democracy thrives on dialogue and representation and Er.

Rashid’s presence in Parliament would only enrich the discussions and provide a much-needed platform for the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Er. Rashid’s contributions as a grassroots leader and his consistent advocacy for human rights and justice besides rights for people of J&K, have resonated deeply with the people. His continued incarceration sends a negative message and undermines the democratic ethos of our nation. We appeal to the government to prioritize justice and fairness by releasing Er. Rashid to allow him to fulfill his duties as a Member of Parliament,” Inam added.

The AIP also called upon civil society, political leaders and human rights organizations to join in demanding Er. Rashid’s release, asserting that his presence in Parliament is not only a matter of personal justice but also an essential step towards addressing the concerns of his constituents.

As the Parliament session approaches, all eyes are now on the Government of India to see whether it will heed the call for justice and allow Er. Rashid to represent the people of North Kashmir, who have placed their unwavering faith in him despite the challenges of the past five years.(KNS).

JKNC President Farooq Abdullah Says on NC-Congress govt performance“Our government going very we”

Farooq Abdullah

Jammu Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah on Sunday said that the NC-Congress government in the Union Territory is doing ‘very well’ and assured of fulfilling all promises made in their election manifesto.

“Our government is going very well…we will fulfil the promises made in our manifesto in 5 years,” JKNC President Abdullah told reporters.

When asked about PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s statement, asking JKNC to make its stand clear on article 370 he said, “… She should not make such statements…our manifesto is clear about this (Article 370) …”

Earlier on Saturday, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah reaffirmed his commitment to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, expressing confidence that it will be achieved.

“How many days have passed since the new government was formed? How many weeks? Will the statehood come from the sky? I have no doubt that we will get the statehood,” Abdullah told reporters.

The state was bifurcated into two Union Territories following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Political parties in the state have been demanding early restoration of statehood.

Responding to ‘Katenge toh batenge”, Abdullah said that India will become strong when diversity is strengthened

“What does it mean? What is this slogan? I don’t understand what it means… What does ‘Katenge, batenge’ mean?… I don’t know. What are we if we are not one? Is India not one? India has unity in diversity. India will become strong when diversity is strengthened,” Abdullah added.

Farooq Abdullah also expressed grief over the loss of children in the Jhansi fire incident, urging the government to provide swift assistance and launch an investigation into the fire incident.

The tragedy unfolded when a fire, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in an oxygen concentrator, quickly spread in the highly oxygenated environment of the NICU, claiming the lives of 10 newborns.

The tragedy has left grieving families devastated, with many still searching for their missing children. (ANI)

PDP Announces key Appointments to Strengthen Party Communications

waheed

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held a significant meeting today at its headquarters in Srinagar, with Party President Mehbooba Mufti leading discussions on issues that matter deeply to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting saw the participation of senior leaders, including Ab Rehman Veeri, Mohd. Sartaj Madni, Gh Nabi Lone Hanjura, Ms. Asiya Naqash, Adv Haq Khan, Basharat Bukhari, and Mohd Khurshid Alam, who came together to share insights and make decisions aimed at strengthening the party’s role in advocating for the region’s needs.

Dr. Mehboob Beg was appointed as the Chief Spokesperson of the PDP. With a distinguished background as a parliamentarian and legislator, Dr. Beg brings invaluable expertise and a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir.

His extensive experience and dedication to public service will be instrumental in conveying the PDP’s vision and commitment to the region’s people.

In addition, MLA Pulwama, Mr. Waheed ur Rehman Para, was selected as the Leader of the Legislative Party, a role that reflects his strong connection with the people and his steadfast dedication to their welfare. Mr. Rafiq Ahmed Naik was appointed Deputy Leader, while MLA Kupwara, Mr. Mir Mohammad Fayaz, will serve as the Chief Whip, ensuring unity and direction within the party’s legislative team.

The PDP leaders also took a moment to appreciate the efforts of their legislators during the recent assembly session, where they voiced public concerns and sentiments within the house. This proactive approach is deeply rooted in the vision of the PDP’s founder late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who believed in speaking up for the people’s aspirations and maintaining a direct connection with the issues that affect them most.

A major focus of the meeting was the hardships facing the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. With unemployment levels soaring and reservation policies affecting countless young lives, the PDP leadership expressed their concern for the struggles young people are enduring.

The leaders called for a more fair and balanced reservation policy, one that provides deserving candidates with opportunities to build secure and meaningful careers. Ms. Mufti emphasized that the PDP would remain committed to advocating for these changes, supporting the younger generation’s aspirations, and working to create a brighter future for all.

Ms. Mehbooba Mufti reiterated the PDP’s mission to stand with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the youth, in their journey toward justice, dignity, and hope for a better tomorrow.

Omar Abdullah slams opposition for accusing NC of compromising After Initial Support in 370 resulation

Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday expressed disappointment over the recent criticism of his party’s resolution in the Legislative Assembly, stating that those who had previously congratulated and supported him  for bringing Article 370 resulation had now started accusing the National Conference (NC) of compromising.

In an address to the assembly, Abdullah said that bringing any resolution that would never be accepted in Parliament was foolish. He stated that such resolutions should instead force Parliament to reconsider the issue.

He described the move as “foolishness,” suggesting that it would ultimately cost the state nothing while failing to address the real concerns of the people.

Referring to the growing controversy surrounding the resolution, Abdullah urged young political leaders to be cautious of the influence of social media platforms, especially WhatsApp and Facebook. He advised them not to let these platforms set the agenda for their political parties, stressing that their focus should remain on substantive issues rather than online rhetoric.

Despite the criticism, Abdullah insisted that the resolution had ignited important conversations among the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “This resolution has brought life to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who are now speaking,” he stated, suggesting that it had succeeded in stimulating public discourse on key political issues. The J&K Assembly witnessed a tense exchange today as PDP leader Waheed Para defended Jamaat-e-Islami and former PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed against remarks by NC MLA Nazir Gurez, who labeled Jamaat members as “traitors.”

Responding sharply, Para said that if any talk of traitors arises, the first tag belongs to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah for his sellout, not Jamaat or PDP founder.

Addressing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah directly, Para said that this isn’t just an ordinary house but history is recorded here. “We raised our voices so that history doesn’t view today’s resolution as surrender, betrayal, or sellout by the people, even as we supported it.

In response, MLA Nazir Gurezi called on the Speaker to review the recording of his speech, insisting he had not made such remarks.

“You have both speeches on record. Kindly check—if I have called them traitors, I’m ready to face any action. Otherwise, I will bring a privilege motion against the MLA,” Gurezi said.(KNS)

MLA Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat Urges Govt to change existing policies of verification for govt jobs

Nizam-ud-Din Bhat

Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat Friday urged the house to press the government to relax the employee verification process.

Highlighting several cases of deserving youth being denied the government jobs due to alleged criminal background of distant relatives, Bhat asked the Speaker to push the government to review the existing process.

The legislator cited the case of Sobiya Mushtaq, an orphan girl, who, as per MLA Bandipora, was denied employment twice due to issues related to her family’s background.

The MLA also citied example of recently released journalist from jail Sajad Gul, saying Gul’s brother, despite being selected on merit for a job in government department faced delay in verification.

Bhat said that such policies are unjustly penalizing innocent individuals, particularly youths and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He called for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and address the issue, ensuring that the employment verification process does not punish individuals for the unrelated actions of their relatives.

Resolution, Passed by the Elected Assembly, is Decisive and well-Considered Move, Not a “Half-Hearted Approach”: Nizam-ud-Din Bhat

Nizam-ud-Din Bhat

Congress leader and Party’s Chief Whip of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, on Tuesday defended the assembly resolution on Article 370, urging the Modi-led government to respect the democratic will behind it.

A local news gathering agency KNO reported that Bhat said that the resolution, passed by the elected assembly, is a decisive and well-considered move, not a “half-hearted approach” as characterized by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti.

Bhat while speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said, “She [Mehbooba Mufti] has every right to voice her opinion, but I don’t think it was half-hearted. The National Conference (NC) was very determined in passing this resolution.” He further clarified that while the resolution emphasizes restoring Article 370, it also leaves room for dialogue, advocating for negotiations if the central government has reservations. “Dialogue is the way forward. If you go by the first paragraph of the resolution, it clearly states that Article 370 should be restored. If the government is hesitant, let them negotiate,” Bhat remarked. He explained that the resolution calls for the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s original constitutional position, stating that it is now a “democratic obligation” for the central government to consider this demand seriously.

The Congress leader also expressed concern over any potential rejection of the resolution by the central government, adding that, should this occur, further deliberations would be essential. “We will adhere to the coalition dharma. The National Conference has every right to deliberate on this issue; we cannot compel them to take a stance,” Bhat said.

J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief Tariq Hameed Karra on Wednesday said that the Congress Party welcomes the resolution passed by the J&K Assembly seeking the restoration of constitutional and democratic rights of the people of J&K, including statehood and all constitutional guarantees.

“After the Supreme Court verdict, this is the first democratic expression of the people of J&K, reflecting their aspirations. There is no reason for the Central Government to deny rights and protections to the people of J&K that are already in place in many other parts of the country,” he said.

“The Indian National Congress (INC) is committed to fighting for statehood for J&K and safeguarding the rights of its people, including land, jobs, natural resources, and cultural identity,” he added.

“BJP’s opposition to the resolution shows that their political interests conflict with the aspirations of the people of J&K. They are not only disregarding the sentiment of the people but also obstructing the restoration of constitutional and democratic rights, including cultural identity, land, jobs, and natural resources. They cannot claim to represent the people of J&K while acting against their rights,” he said.

He said that the resolution provides an opportunity for meaningful engagement between New Delhi and the people of J&K, in light of the mistrust created by the actions of the BJP government over the past several years.(KNS)

NC’s Resolution Acknowledges Concerns Over 2019 Revocation of J&K’s Special Status But Stops Short of Condemnation: Mehbooba Mufti

Mehbooba Mufti

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday described the resolution on Article 370 moved by the National Conference in the legislative assembly, as “halfhearted” and “lacking conviction”.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters in Srinagar, PDP president, said the resolution, intended to call for the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, fell short in language and intent.

“The language could have been better, this is a halfhearted attempt and we are thinking of bringing amendments to the resolution,” she said.

She said that while NC’s resolution did acknowledge concerns about the 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, but it failed to explicitly condemn the decision, which she described as unconstitutional.

“Instead of firmly calling for the complete restoration of Article 370, the resolution only suggested that dialogue be held on the matter. Dialogue with whom,” Mufti questioned.

The PDP president during the presser said that the party was considering bringing amendments to the resolution, to ensure it reflects the strong sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“This isn’t about taking credit,” she said, adding that PDP’s stance remains rooted in its commitment to its election promises, to fully oppose the revocation and seek its restoration—(KNO)

MLA Mehraj Malik

Aam Admi Party MLA Mehraj Malik on Wednesday said that his party has extended his supported to resolution of Article 370 passed by the J&K Assembly.
