Pakistan Deploys Rangers in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir (Azad Kashmir) Amid Crackdown on JAAC Protest Movement

The latest developments come after the JAAC was declared a banned organisation under Pakistan’s anti-terror laws in June 2026. Since then, security forces have arrested dozens of activists and senior leaders, while protest organisers and human rights groups have accused the authorities of carrying out mass detentions and using excessive force against demonstrators.
Authorities have also strengthened security by deploying Rangers alongside local police, setting up checkpoints and roadblocks, suspending mobile internet services in several areas and restricting public gatherings to prevent planned protest marches.
Recent clashes between protesters and security forces have turned deadly. Reuters reported that nine people, including protesters and security personnel, were killed during violence ahead of a planned protest march. Local sources quoted by Reuters said that around 30 people have died in unrest linked to the crackdown since June.
The protests are centred on opposition to 12 reserved seats in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir Legislative Assembly that are allocated to refugees living elsewhere in Pakistan. JAAC argues that the arrangement reduces the political representation of local residents and has demanded governance reforms and greater political rights.
Despite widespread claims circulating on social media, there is no credible evidence that Pakistan has formally transferred the administration of Pakistan-administered Kashmir to the Pakistan Rangers. Available reports indicate that the Rangers have been deployed to support police and maintain security during the ongoing unrest, not to take over civil administration.
The situation remains highly tense, with security forces maintaining a strong presence across several towns while protest leaders continue to demand the release of detained activists, an end to the crackdown and political reforms.
