Silence of the Islamic World: Trump’s Gaza Proposal Exposes Deep Divisions of a Divided Ummah

Divided Ummah

The recent statement by former U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting the relocation of Gaza’s population to another country, has sparked a firestorm of controversy. While Israel has reportedly welcomed the idea, the reaction—or lack thereof—from the Islamic world has been deafening in its silence. This silence is not just a momentary lapse but a glaring reflection of the deep divisions and systemic failures within the Muslim world, often referred to as the Ummah. Trump’s proposal, though widely condemned as inhumane and impractical, has laid bare the fractured state of Muslim leadership and the growing disconnect between rulers and their people.

Trump’s Controversial Proposal

Trump’s statement, made during a private meeting and later leaked to the media, proposed resettling the people of Gaza in another country as a “solution” to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The idea was immediately criticized by human rights organizations and international observers, who labeled it as a violation of international law and the rights of Palestinians to their homeland. However, what stood out more than the proposal itself was the muted response from the Islamic world. While ordinary Muslims expressed outrage on social media and in public forums, the official response from Muslim-majority nations was conspicuously absent or tepid at best.

The Silence of Muslim Leaders

The silence of Muslim leaders in the face of such a provocative statement has raised serious questions about their commitment to the Palestinian cause. Historically, the Palestinian issue has been a unifying factor for the Muslim world, symbolizing resistance against occupation and injustice. However, in recent years, the solidarity once shown by Muslim nations has eroded, replaced by geopolitical alliances and economic interests. Many Muslim-majority countries have normalized relations with Israel, often under pressure from Western powers, particularly the United States. This normalization has come at the cost of sidelining the Palestinian struggle, leaving the people of Gaza to fend for themselves.

The lack of a unified, forceful response to Trump’s proposal underscores the deep divisions within the Muslim world. While countries like Iran and Turkey have been vocal in their support for Palestine, others, particularly those in the Gulf region, have remained silent or offered only token condemnations. This disparity highlights the growing rift between nations that prioritize ideological solidarity and those that prioritize economic and strategic partnerships with the West.

The Anger of the Muslim Public

In stark contrast to the silence of their leaders, the Muslim public has expressed widespread anger and frustration. Social media platforms have been flooded with hashtags condemning Trump’s statement and calling for action to support Gaza. Protests have erupted in several countries, with demonstrators demanding that their governments take a stronger stance against what they see as a blatant disregard for Palestinian rights. This disconnect between the rulers and the ruled is not new but has become increasingly pronounced in recent years.

The anger of the Muslim public is not just directed at Trump or Israel but also at their own leaders, who are perceived as being complicit in the oppression of Palestinians. Many see the silence of Muslim rulers as evidence of their subservience to Western powers, particularly the United States. This perception has fueled a sense of betrayal and disillusionment, further deepening the divisions within the Ummah.

A Divided Ummah: Causes and Consequences

The divisions within the Muslim world are not merely political but also ideological, sectarian, and economic. Sectarian conflicts, such as the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, have undermined efforts to present a united front on issues like Palestine. Economic disparities have also played a role, with wealthier nations prioritizing their own interests over collective action. Additionally, the lack of strong, visionary leadership has left the Muslim world fragmented and unable to respond effectively to external challenges.

The consequences of this division are far-reaching. The inability to present a unified stance on critical issues like Palestine weakens the Muslim world’s influence on the global stage. It also emboldens external powers to take actions that undermine the rights and dignity of Muslims, as seen in Trump’s proposal. Moreover, the growing disconnect between rulers and their people threatens the stability of many Muslim-majority countries, as public discontent continues to rise.

A Call for Unity and Action

The silence of the Islamic world in the face of Trump’s Gaza proposal is a wake-up call for Muslim leaders and communities alike. It is a reminder that the unity of the Ummah cannot be taken for granted and that the Palestinian cause remains a litmus test for the Muslim world’s commitment to justice and human rights. To address these challenges, Muslim leaders must prioritize the interests of their people over geopolitical alliances and work towards greater unity and cooperation.

Ordinary Muslims, too, have a role to play. By holding their leaders accountable and advocating for collective action, they can help bridge the divisions within the Ummah and ensure that the voices of the oppressed are heard. The Palestinian cause is not just a political issue but a moral one, and it is incumbent upon the Muslim world to stand together in defense of justice and dignity.

Conclusion

Trump’s proposal to resettle the people of Gaza may have been dismissed as impractical and inhumane, but it has exposed the deep divisions and systemic failures within the Muslim world. The silence of Muslim leaders in the face of such a provocative statement is a stark reminder of the challenges facing the Ummah. However, it is also an opportunity for reflection and action. By addressing the root causes of these divisions and working towards greater unity, the Muslim world can reclaim its voice and reaffirm its commitment to justice, not just for Palestinians but for all oppressed people. The time for silence is over; the time for action is now.

Waheed Para and Sajad Lone Accuses NC Government of Endorsing August 5, 2019 Changes

Waheed Para and Sajad Lone

Peoples Conference and Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday accused the National Conference Government in Jammu and Kashmir of endorsing August 5, 2019 (abrogation of J&K’s special status) changes.

Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone and PDP legislator, Waheed Para, reacted sharply over proposed deletion of references to J&K Constitution in business rules.

PC chairman and MLA Handwara, Sajad Lone wrote on X: “Endorsement of draft proposal prepared by Assembly secretariat regarding Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House will be the most explicit  and unforgivable ratification of August 5, 2019 changes.”

“It will effectively end once and for all any scope for legal challenge to 5 August changes, in the future. While we dreamt of a an unambiguous resolution by the new assembly rejecting 5 August 2019, and that becoming a reference point in any future legal challenge —-now we have a shocker,” he wrote.

“The same Assembly is being used to bury any such chances of legal challenges in the future. The present assembly reflecting the will of people of J and K, will now be remembered as the endorser not the rejecter of August 5 2019,” he added.

“The Assembly which we thought will be the voice of people of J and K is now a shameless rubber stamp of the perpetrators of August 5.  The ruling NC led government purposely constituted a Committee which had 6 NC members and 2 BJP members. There was no one from the Kashmir based opposition parties or MLAs,” Lone wrote.

“This committee endorses all changes made on 5 August 2019. By virtue of this draft— they even took away references to J&K Constitution and bills governing permanent residents from the Rules. Such a cruel joke at the expense of people of Kashmir,” he said.

“Let me briefly summarise the NC BJP covert agreement to endorse and normalise 5 August 2019.  First they script the context. NC starts the “all are BJP” discourse. Second, the BJP mysteriously behaves in a manner which endorses that discourse. The discourse is strengthened and then elections are announced. While the people of J and K to some extent subscribe to the “all others are BJP” discourse, the agencies led by a retired old war horse in uninterrupted engagement with the NC from the last 3 years, ensures total compliance of the agencies in favour of NC,” he wrote.

“This 42 seat lottery is a gift in order to endorse. The NC is the master endorser of all the changes that Delhi had brought in. Remember the older gifts in lieu of endorsements. 1975 gift of government with no MLAs to endorse erosions from 1950 to 1975. 1996 gift of government on a platter by conducting an exercise of selection in Kashmir and calling it election. That was to endorse the killings and acts of violence committed by the state. And now 2024 gift to endorse changes made on 5 August 2019. It is a curse to be an MLA of an assembly which will be remembered for endorsing 5 August,” Lone wrote.

Meanwhile, PDP MLA Waheed Para posted a screenshot of a news report on X which read: “The modifications have been proposed to make the rules in sync with the constitutional changes effected on August 5, 2019,” a member of the committee wishing to remain anonymous said.

“The modified J&K Assembly business rules mark a shift from Article 370, effectively endorsing the constitutional changes of August 5, 2019. A clear acknowledgment of the new status quo,” Para wrote on X. (KNO)

Vocal Critic of Political Islam, Indian Activist Zahack Tanvir Released After Saudi Detention for Anti-Pakistan Posts

Zahack Tanvir

Indian activist Zahack Tanvir, who was arrested in Saudi Arabia in December 2023 for allegedly posting anti-Pakistan content on social media, has been released after nearly a year in detention. His release marks the end of a highly publicized case that garnered attention due to the intersection of social media activism, international diplomacy, and national security concerns. Tanvir’s detention and subsequent release shed light on the complexities of freedom of expression, diplomatic relations, and the role of foreign embassies in protecting citizens abroad.

The Arrest: A Social Media Dispute

Zahack Tanvir, a 39-year-old Indian national originally from Hyderabad, had been living in Saudi Arabia for over a decade. Prior to his arrest, he was a vocal critic of extremist ideologies and often shared his opinions on social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). As the founder and director of the UK-based Milli Chronicle media, Tanvir was known for his anti-Islamist views, support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and his writings on issues ranging from the rising global profile of India to the complexities of the South Asian political landscape.

In December 2023, Tanvir was arrested by Saudi authorities after he posted content deemed to be critical of Pakistan’s political system. The posts were reportedly focused on topics like Pakistan’s promotion of extremist elements and the alleged detention of Afghan children in Pakistani prisons. According to Tanvir, these posts were aimed at encouraging critical thinking among Pakistanis, rather than inciting diplomatic tensions between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Saudi authorities, however, viewed these posts differently. They argued that the content could potentially damage the diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, both of which share deep historical and economic ties. In addition, it was reported that the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had lodged a formal complaint, further complicating the case.

The Charges and Legal Proceedings

Following his arrest, Tanvir was subjected to hours of intense questioning by Saudi police. Initially, he was not informed of the charges against him, which added to the confusion and frustration surrounding the case. It wasn’t until later that authorities informed him that his posts on social media had allegedly breached the country’s laws regarding national security and diplomatic relations.

Despite maintaining that his posts were harmless and were not intended to harm Saudi-Pakistan relations, Tanvir found himself facing serious charges. His legal team argued that the content was posted in English, not Arabic, suggesting that the intended audience was a global one, not the Saudi public. Furthermore, the prosecution’s failure to provide sufficient evidence linking Tanvir’s actions directly to a threat to Saudi-Pakistan relations was a critical point in his defense.

Tanvir’s first court hearing in March 2024 resulted in a five-year prison sentence for the five posts he was accused of sharing. However, his legal team appealed the verdict, leading to a reduction of the sentence to one year in prison. Despite this reduction, Tanvir remained in custody for several more months as his case was further reviewed by the Saudi Supreme Court.

In a significant turn of events, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia eventually dismissed all charges against Tanvir, citing the lack of substantial evidence and the failure to demonstrate a deliberate intent to disrupt diplomatic relations. The ruling not only resulted in Tanvir’s freedom but also highlighted the role of legal advocacy and diplomatic pressure in ensuring a fair resolution.

The Role of the Indian Embassy

Throughout Tanvir’s ordeal, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh played a crucial role in securing his release. Tanvir has publicly thanked the embassy for its unwavering support, which included regular visits to his detention center, legal assistance, and efforts to ensure his case received appropriate attention. He specifically highlighted the involvement of Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Indian diplomat Suhel Ajaz Khan, whose consistent follow-up with Saudi authorities helped bring about his eventual release.

The Indian Embassy’s intervention was particularly notable because, unlike other foreign embassies, it was able to meet with Tanvir directly while he was in detention. This diplomatic support proved critical in navigating the complex legal system and ensuring that Tanvir’s rights were respected during the legal proceedings.

The Aftermath: Release and Reflections

Tanvir’s release on December 6, 2024, was met with a mix of emotions. While he expressed gratitude to the Indian Embassy and the people who supported him throughout the ordeal, he also voiced frustration over the legal process that had led to his lengthy detention. He emphasized that his views had not changed during the course of his detention. In his public statements, Tanvir made it clear that he had always adhered to a version of Islam that opposed extremism and supported free expression. He also reiterated his belief in the need for critical discussions, particularly regarding the political dynamics of neighboring countries like Pakistan.

Following his release, Tanvir was granted a legal exit from Saudi Arabia, allowing him to leave the kingdom with all charges officially quashed. He chose not to return to his previous job in Saudi Arabia, opting instead to relocate to the United States. His decision to leave Saudi Arabia was partly driven by a desire for personal safety and a better opportunity to continue his activism in a freer environment.

Tanvir’s case has brought attention to the challenges faced by activists and social media users in countries with strict laws governing free speech and political commentary. His experience highlights the increasing risks associated with expressing political opinions online, especially when those views are critical of other nations.

A Closer Look at Zahack Tanvir’s Ideology

Zahack Tanvir identifies himself as an “anti-Islamist” traditional Muslim, a position that has often set him apart from mainstream Muslim thought. He is a vocal critic of political Islam and the radicalization of Muslim youth, and he supports efforts to combat extremist ideologies. His views have brought him both praise and criticism, particularly in the context of his support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is often seen as a polarizing figure in Indian politics.

Tanvir’s writings have frequently centered around issues of national security, geopolitics, and the global rise of India. He has been a vocal critic of how certain international media outlets, like the BBC, have portrayed Modi and his policies, especially in the context of the 2023 documentary on the Prime Minister. Tanvir’s alignment with Modi’s government has drawn attention due to the contentious political climate surrounding the Prime Minister’s leadership, especially with regard to his policies on minorities in India.

Despite the controversy surrounding his views, Tanvir remains committed to his principles, emphasizing the importance of expressing one’s opinions openly, even in the face of adversity. His time in Saudi Arabia has undoubtedly shaped his perspective on the importance of free expression and the potential dangers posed by state-controlled censorship.

Conclusion

The release of Zahack Tanvir from Saudi detention is a reminder of the complex relationship between freedom of speech, international diplomacy, and the role of embassies in safeguarding their citizens’ rights abroad. Tanvir’s case also underscores the growing influence of social media as a platform for political activism, as well as the risks associated with challenging established narratives.

As global political tensions continue to rise, it is likely that we will see more cases like Tanvir’s, where individuals use online platforms to express dissent, only to face repercussions from governments that view such expressions as threats to national security or diplomatic relations. The case also raises important questions about the limits of free speech in the digital age and the responsibility of foreign governments to protect the rights of their citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.

For Zahack Tanvir, his ordeal has not only solidified his commitment to his ideological views but also reinforced his belief in the importance of speaking out on issues that matter to him. Now residing in the United States, Tanvir’s future remains uncertain, but his release marks the end of a difficult chapter in his life and the beginning of a new one.

The Dark Reality of Fascism: Discrimination, Oppression, and Modern-Day “Holocausts” Against Minorities

writer N.A. Moomin

The most disturbing aspect of “hypocritical democracy”—i.e., fascism—emerges when it discriminates against minorities based on religion or ethnicity, while attempting to erase their religio-cultural identity. It forces them to leave their homeland through economic boycotts and commercial blockades, cleansing towns, cities, and neighborhoods of their populations. This is done by invalidating their legal documents, restricting their access to education and job opportunities, and involving them in countless fabricated crimes and cases, branding them as foreigners. It involves banning their schools and demolishing places of worship to appease the majority and enforce majoritarianism.

When the oppressed still resist or manage to remain in their native land, the methods of oppression escalate to direct action. The first phase of oppression is like “throwing a stone at a tree to make all the birds fly away in fear.” Then, the focus shifts to the targeted community, stripping them of voting rights and initiating direct violence, including killings and genocides. The rulers issue a decree: either convert to the religion of the majority or leave our ‘sacred’ land. This represents the final phase of oppression—an explicit order to cleanse the land of ‘impure’ minorities.

In Germany, Hitler executed this scheme. The Nazi party became the instrument of unspeakable brutality and atrocities against the Jews. The concentration camps became symbols of an unparalleled campaign of torture and genocide, introducing a new term in history—“The Holocaust.”

A similar tragedy occurred before the Holocaust in five European countries, targeting Muslims. This “Holocaust” did not receive the same international attention or recognition as the Nazi atrocities. Spain, Sicily, Portugal, Serbia, and Greece all enacted brutal campaigns against the Muslims who had played a pivotal role in shaping their civilizations and economies. Today, these countries have only a small or negligible Muslim population, where Muslims once ruled for centuries.

Fascists still exist today, continuing their dark deeds under the guise of religious purity. Modern-day “holocausts” are orchestrated in democratic societies by mobilizing vote banks, spreading misinformation, fueling hatred through the media, and misusing government machinery to target specific communities. It is a chilling reflection of how rulers can become cruel and inhuman in their insatiable thirst for power.

Srinagar Experiences Winter Chill at 1°C as Fresh Snowfall and Rainfall Hit Jammu & Kashmir

Cloudy weather forecast in Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar continued to feel the winter chill with the minimum temperature at 1.0 degrees Celsius on Sunday, as per India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The city is likely to experience partly cloudy sky becoming generally cloudy towards afternoon or evening or night’ today, as per the Met Department.

kashmir welcomes first snowfall
Kashmir experienced its season’s first snowfall

Upper reaches of Bhalessa in Doda district of the Union Territory received fresh snowfall, while the plains experienced rainfall, leading to a significant dip in temperatures. For farmers and orchard owners, this comes as a relief after a prolonged dry spell in the region.

Meanwhile, in a move to ensure safe passage amidst the snowfall and inclement weather conditions in Sonamarg in Kashmir, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has initiated snow clearance operations to enhance traffic flow in the area.

The Kashmir valley has been covered under a blanket of snow for the past few days. Although snowfall and these layers of snow may look breathtaking and mesmerising, it also hampers the daily activities of the people residing there.

Further down, the weather department has forecast dense fog in isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Dense fog covered the national capital on Sunday morning affecting visibility.

The fog was accompanied by cold winds. According to IMD, the lowest temperature in Delhi on Sunday is 10 degrees Celsius. It has predicted rain for Delhi on February 3.

Meanwhile, Dehi’s air quality was recorded in the “very poor” category. According the Central Pollution Control Board, Air Quality Index was logged at 340 at 8 am this morning.

An AQI rating is categorised as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and 401-500 (severe).

Cold weather conditions continue to grip the national capital, with residents seeking refuge in night shelters to escape the biting cold.

On Saturday night, many were seen huddled in shelters across areas like Nizamuddin and Lodhi Road, looking for warmth amid the harsh conditions.

The shelters are usually simple structures–either, community centres, or tents — with basic amenities like heaters to provide warmth.

In coordination with various NGOs, the Delhi government has made efforts to provide warm clothing, blankets, and heated spaces to accommodate the growing number of people turning to these facilities.

Tinku Kumar, a caretaker of one of the night shelters said, “We have 20 beds for the people. All of the people have been provided with food and blankets including medicines.”

The dip in morning and night temperatures is attributed to northwesterly winds coming from the Himalayas. (ANI)

Saudi Arabia has shown keen interest in supporting Syria’s new leadership. Last month, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan visited Damascus and met with al-Sharaa, emphasizing Riyadh’s willingness to help Syria navigate international diplomatic challenges. Prince Faisal also stressed the importance of lifting and freezing international sanctions that have impacted Syria’s economy for years.

The Saudi government has been a key player in humanitarian aid to Syria, providing support for reconstruction efforts and helping the country recover from the devastating effects of war.

Economic Prospects and Investment Opportunities

In a December interview with Al Arabiya, al-Sharaa expressed optimism about Syria’s economic future, stating that Saudi Arabia would play a crucial role in its rebuilding efforts. He pointed to the significant investment opportunities for neighboring countries and international investors as Syria moves toward economic recovery.

Interestingly, al-Sharaa revealed a personal connection to Saudi Arabia, mentioning that he was born there while his father worked in the Kingdom. He spent his early years in Saudi Arabia before returning to Syria, strengthening his ties with the country on a personal level.

Future Diplomatic Engagements

This visit signals Syria’s intent to re-engage with regional powers and re-establish its position in the Arab world. As al-Sharaa meets with Saudi leaders, discussions are expected to cover economic cooperation, diplomatic relations, and strategies for stabilizing Syria’s political landscape.

Observers believe this visit could mark the beginning of a new era for Syria, with Saudi Arabia playing a vital role in shaping its future. The world will be watching closely as al-Sharaa navigates his leadership and works toward rebuilding Syria with the support of regional allies.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Proposes Inter-Community Committee to Bridge Gaps Between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq

In a significant move toward healing the longstanding rifts in Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the influential religious leader of the Kashmir Valley, has proposed the formation of an Inter-Community Committee aimed at fostering greater understanding and reconciliation between Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits. This initiative, which seeks to bridge the gaps between the two communities, was announced following a critical meeting between Mirwaiz and a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits from the J&K Peace Forum on January 31, 2025, at the JW Marriott Hotel in New Delhi.

The Proposal: A Step Toward Unity

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s proposal is a part of his broader vision to restore peace and harmony in Kashmir, a region that has witnessed decades of conflict and division. The proposed Inter-Community Committee is envisioned as a platform where Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits can engage in meaningful dialogue, address historical grievances, and work toward creating a more inclusive and peaceful future.

In the meeting, Mirwaiz emphasized the importance of communal harmony, stressing that Kashmir’s identity is incomplete without the presence of both communities. He stated, “Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits,” acknowledging the profound loss and pain experienced by the Pandit community during the exodus of 1989-90, when thousands of Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave the region due to rising tensions and violence.

Addressing the Shared Suffering

One of the key themes of the meeting was the shared suffering of both Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits. Mirwaiz acknowledged the tragic displacement of the Kashmiri Pandit community and the challenges they faced in the aftermath of their exodus. He emphasized that the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits must be addressed earnestly, a point he has raised consistently in his discourses.

During the one-and-a-half-hour discussion, Mirwaiz also expressed his belief that the younger generation needs to be educated about the composite culture of Kashmir, which has historically been a harmonious blend of different communities, including Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists. He underscored the importance of preserving this cultural fabric, which he believes is essential for maintaining peace and mutual respect among the diverse communities of the region.

Mirwaiz’s call for cultural preservation is significant, especially given the challenges the region has faced in recent decades. The Kashmir Valley has been severely affected by political instability, militancy, and violence, leading to a deepening divide between various communities. Mirwaiz’s initiative to educate the younger generation about Kashmir’s inclusive heritage could play a crucial role in fostering a sense of unity and shared history.

The Kashmiri Pandit Perspective

The Kashmiri Pandit delegation, led by members of the J&K Peace Forum, shared their ongoing struggles and the hardships they have endured since their displacement. In an emotional account, they spoke of the painful memories of being “hounded out for none of their reasons” and the severe difficulties they have faced in rebuilding their lives in exile. Many members of the delegation recounted selling their possessions to provide education for their children and struggling to maintain their cultural identity in foreign lands.

Despite these hardships, the Kashmiri Pandit delegation emphasized their unwavering support for their Muslim brothers and sisters. They remarked, “We have always extended support to our Muslim brothers and sisters in times of distress, and vice versa.” This sentiment of mutual solidarity and shared history has been a recurring theme in the discussions between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits over the years, but it has often been overshadowed by political tensions and the trauma of the exodus.

The delegation also highlighted the moral authority of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in leading this initiative. As the spiritual leader of Kashmir, Mirwaiz is seen not just as a religious figure but as a representative of all communities, including minorities. His position as a unifying force in the region gives him the credibility and moral standing to lead the proposed Inter-Community Committee.

The Role of Religious Leaders in Healing Divides

The involvement of religious leaders in the peace process is crucial for the success of any initiative aimed at reconciliation in Kashmir. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s leadership and his position as a symbol of religious tolerance and unity are central to the success of the proposed Inter-Community Committee. His ability to bridge the gap between the two communities, rooted in shared religious and cultural values, could be key to breaking the cycle of mistrust and division that has plagued Kashmir for decades.

Religious leaders in Kashmir, including Mirwaiz, have historically played an influential role in shaping the region’s social and political landscape. In recent years, however, the role of religion in politics has become more contentious, with religious divisions often exacerbating the conflict. However, Mirwaiz’s call for unity based on the shared values of compassion, peace, and respect for diversity offers a hopeful path forward.

A Hopeful Future for Kashmir?

The proposal to create an Inter-Community Committee is a positive step toward reconciliation in Kashmir, a region that has long been marked by sectarian violence and political turmoil. While the road to peace and unity will undoubtedly be challenging, initiatives like this offer a glimmer of hope for a more harmonious future. By focusing on shared suffering, mutual support, and the preservation of Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, Mirwaiz’s proposal could pave the way for deeper understanding and collaboration between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits.

The success of this initiative will depend on the willingness of both communities to engage in open and honest dialogue, as well as the continued leadership of figures like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who remain committed to healing the wounds of the past. If the proposed Inter-Community Committee is able to achieve its goals, it could serve as a model for conflict resolution in other regions facing similar challenges.

For now, the people of Kashmir, both Muslim and Pandit, await the next steps in this hopeful journey toward communal harmony and a brighter future for all.

Abdul Rafi, Kashmiri Engineer Jailed in Saudi Arabia for Years, Appeals to Home Minister Amit Shah for Help

Er Abdul Rafi

For six-year-old Hafsah and her four-year-old brother Mohammad Anwar, waiting for their father’s return has become a daily ritual. Their father, Abdul Rafi Baba, a 36-year-old networking engineer from Srinagar’s Soura area, has been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for the past four years. He was arrested in early 2020 while working at King Faisal University in Hofuf. The family learned of his arrest on March 1, 2020, and has been seeking answers ever since.

Rafi’s father, Manzoor ul Haq Baba, described his son as a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record in Kashmir. Despite his clean record, Rafi remains behind bars with no clear charges against him. Manzoor believes his son was framed due to issues at his workplace in Saudi Arabia.

Manzoor, now elderly and a widower, has tried to contact authorities but received no responses. He has written letters to India’s Home Minister and External Affairs Minister, seeking assistance, but to no avail. “We are financially broken. We don’t have the means to fight his case in Saudi Arabia,” Manzoor said.

There have been no new public developments or breakthroughs reported since February 2025. Abdul Rafi Baba, the 36-year-old Kashmiri networking engineer from Soura, Srinagar, remains imprisoned in Dammam Intelligence Jail, Saudi Arabia.

Current Status

  • Arrest: March 1, 2020 (detained at his workplace at King Faisal University in Hofuf/Al-Ahsa region).
  • Charges: Cyber-related crimes linked to terror activities, specifically for allegedly circulating objectionable videos on social media (as confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to the family and Jammu & Kashmir Students Association – JKSA).
  • Sentencing: Initially sentenced to around 9–11 years. After appeals (filed by both Baba and the Saudi Public Prosecution), an appeal court increased the sentence to 31 years.
  • Current Stage: The case is pending before the Saudi Supreme Court. No final verdict has been publicly announced.

He has been held for over six years now (as of March 2026). The family continues to assert that the charges are false and possibly linked to workplace disputes, with no prior criminal record in India.

Diplomatic and Legal Efforts (Last Major Updates – February 2025)

  • The Indian Embassy in Riyadh has provided consular access multiple times, with the most recent confirmed visit on September 11, 2024. During these visits, Baba reportedly stated he was in good health, in touch with his family, and had no major complaints about basic conditions.
  • JKSA wrote to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, urging diplomatic intervention for a fair trial, release, and repatriation. The MEA responded, confirming the details of the case and sentencing.
  • In February 2025, the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court admitted a writ petition (WP(C): 303/2025) filed by Baba’s wife (Mariyam Ali) and father (Manzoor-ul-Haq Baba). The court directed the government to submit a status report. The next hearing was scheduled for March 4, 2025, but no further public outcomes have been reported since then.

Family’s Situation

Baba’s ailing father, Manzoor-ul-Haq Baba, has made emotional public appeals, requesting intervention so he can see his son before his health deteriorates further. The family includes two young children (daughter Hafsah and son Mohammad Anwar) who have grown up largely without their father. They face ongoing financial and emotional hardship and have had very limited direct contact with him.

Context

Local Kashmir-based media (Kashmir Times, Greater Kashmir, Siasat, ETV Bharat, etc.) and student groups like JKSA have actively highlighted the case through appeals and coverage in early 2025. The matter involves sensitive consular, legal, and diplomatic aspects between India and Saudi Arabia, with outcomes depending on Saudi judicial proceedings and any potential high-level interventions.

As of now (March 2026), Abdul Rafi Baba continues to languish in jail with his case unresolved at the Supreme Court level. No reports of release, sentence reduction, or major new diplomatic breakthroughs have surfaced in recent months.

If new information emerges or if you have additional details/context (e.g., specific sources or aspects to check), I can look for further updates. Families in such cases often rely on sustained diplomatic engagement through the MEA and Indian Embassy.

Union Government Allocates Rs 9325 Crore for J&K Police in 2025-26 Budget

policebugdet

The Government of India has allocated Rs 9325 crore for J&K Police, which is under the administrative control of the Union Home Ministry, in the Union Budget for 2025-26.

As per the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) demands for grants for 2025-26, Rs 9325.73 crore have been allocated to the J&K Police in the Union Budget. Of this amount, Rs 8897.72 crore has been earmarked for the revenue expenditure and Rs 428.01 crore for the capital expenditure.

These budgetary provisions have been made to meet the administrative expenditures of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which is responsible for maintaining and enforcing law and order and managing traffic in J&K.

Since 2024-25, the J&K Police’s budget has been part of the Union Budget. While the Union government has described the takeover of the J&K Police budget as an act of financial benevolence, opposition parties have argued that it indicates J&K will continue to remain under the Union government’s control for a longer period.

In 2019, the Union Government took over the power of legislating on J&K Police through the J&K Reorganisation Act. “Subject to the provisions of this Act, the Legislative Assembly may make laws for the whole or any part of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir with respect to any of the matters enumerated in the State List except the subjects mentioned at entries 1 and 2, namely ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ respectively, or the Concurrent List in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India in so far as any such matter is applicable in relation to the Union territories,” section 28 of the law bifurcating J&K into two UTs states—(KNO)
