Ex-RAW chief AS Dulat has warned that the current “happiness” among Kashmiris following the 2024 elections may be short-lived, emphasizing that their optimism is tied to the unmet promise of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. He stated that both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the central government’s credibility are at stake as Kashmiris await the restoration of their statehood.

Dulat pointed out that Omar Abdullah, who has sought a positive relationship with the central government since becoming chief minister, is not asking for much by advocating for the return of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. According to Dulat, while Kashmiris may still reflect on the removal of Article 370, which revoked the region’s special status in 2019, Abdullah understands it won’t be reinstated. What he desires, Dulat said, is the restoration of statehood to uphold both his own dignity and that of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

He noted that Delhi seems committed to the restoration of statehood, but only on its own terms, with no clear timeline in sight.

Pal said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey moved a motion to suspend the opposition MPs for creating a “ruckus” after they resorted to “shouting” and “sloganeering” while not allowing the meeting to continue.

“We adjourned the house twice. We had given time to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on the suggestions of the opposition only. Kalyan Banerjee used unparliamentary words against me and abused me. I kept requesting him to let the invitees speak.

However, they were adamant about creating a ruckus. We adjourned the house again and again but they (opposition MPs) did not want the meeting to continue. From Jammu and Kashmir, a delegation had come but they (opposition MPs) kept shouting and sloganeering…so finally Nishikant Dubey had to move a motion and everyone agreed to suspend them,” Jagdambika Pal told ANI.

Responding to allegations of changing the subject of the notice for the JPC sitting, Pal said that the agenda was changed only for today and considering the requests made by the opposition, who wanted Kashmiri cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to be invited to the meeting.

“We changed the agenda for today only on the request of the opposition leaders who contacted me saying that Mirwaiz should be invited and shifted today’s agenda (to hold a discussion clause-by-clause to January 27,” Pal added.

Responding to the allegations of rushing the proceedings for the JPC meeting owing to Delhi assembly elections, the senior BJP leader said that it was Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju who urged the speaker to refer the bill to JPC and not the opposition.

“If the government wanted to hasten things, why would it refer the bill to JPC? The government has a majority in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The opposition didn’t, but Kiren Rijiju, after introducing it in the Parliament, himself urged the speaker to refer the bill to JPC,” Pal said, adding, “Mirwaiz and his delegation expressed their concerns and raised objections to certain sections (of the bill). This shows that the parliamentary democracy in the country is being strengthened.”

Earlier in the day, all the Opposition MPs that are part of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, were suspended from Friday’s sitting. The suspended MPs include Mohammad Jawaid, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kalyan Banerjee, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader A Raja, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Nasir Hussain, Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders Mohibbullah Nadvi, M. Abdullah, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Arvind Sawant, Nadimul Haque, and Congress’ Imran Masood.

“What is going on is an undeclared emergency,” Banerjee asserted while referring to the happenings inside the JPC meeting. He said that the subject and dates for the meeting were changed after they landed in Delhi for the meet. The TMC MP accused the government of “hurrying” owing to the upcoming Assembly polls in the national capital, which are scheduled to be held on February 5.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey accused the Opposition of creating a “ruckus” during the JPC meeting, saying that their conduct was against parliamentary democracy. He informed the next meeting will happen on January 27 and submission to the Speaker will happen on January 29.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is to submit its report during the Budget session. The term of the committee was extended during the winter session of Parliament.

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Applies for Arrest Warrants Against Taliban Leaders Over Crimes Against Humanity

The International Criminal Court prosecutor said on Thursday he had applied for arrest warrants for two Taliban leaders in Afghanistan including supreme spiritual leader Haibatullah Akhundzada, accusing them of crimes against humanity for widespread discrimination against women and girls.

A statement issued by the office of chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said evidence collected as part of investigations provided reasonable grounds to believe that Akhundzada and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, who has served as chief justice since 2021, “bear criminal responsibility for the crime against humanity of persecution on gender grounds.”

They are “criminally responsible for persecuting Afghan girls and women, as well as persons whom the Taliban perceived as not conforming with their ideological expectations of gender identity or expression, and persons whom the Taliban perceived as allies of girls and women,” the statement said.

The persecution has taken place from at least Aug 15, 2021 until the present day, across the territory of Afghanistan and is ongoing, the prosecutor said.

There was no immediate comment by Taliban leaders on the prosecutor’s statement.

It will now be up to a three-judge panel at the ICC to rule on the prosecution request, which has no set deadline. Such procedures take an average of three months.

In August last year, the Taliban codified a long set of rules governing morality in line with Islamic sharia law. The rules are enforced by the morality ministry, which says it has detained thousands of people for violations.

Khan said his office was demonstrating its commitment to pursuing accountability for gender-based crimes and that the Taliban’s interpretation of sharia could not be a justification for human rights abuses or crimes.

The prosecutor said Afghan women and girls are facing an unprecedented, unconscionable and ongoing “persecution” by the Taliban. “Our action signals that the status quo for women and girls in Afghanistan is not acceptable,” he added.

The Afghanistan probe is one of the longest by ICC prosecutors and has been beset by legal and practical delays. The initial preliminary examination started in 2007 and it was only in 2022 that a full-scale investigation moved forward.

Since Taliban returned to power in 2021 it has clamped down on women’s rights, including limits to schooling, work and general independence in daily life.

Farooq Abdullah Blames PDP for Abrogation of Article 370 , Warns of Internal Threats to India

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that India is facing dangers not from outside but within and slammed the “propaganda that Hindus are in danger” in the country.

“Even today the country demands sacrifices from us to take our independence forward. If we can’t do it, then we won’t be able to save India. India has no danger from outside but from within the country,” Farooq Abdullah said while addressing party workers in the party office in Jammu.

It is always an insider who harms the house, not an outsider. If we have to strengthen this house, we need to strengthen ourselves. We have to go among people to know about the troubles they face and find solutions…It is their propaganda that Hindus are in danger. I ask them how it is possible when Hindus consist of 80% of the whole population. Such propaganda is done only to create fear among people,” he added.

He said that after the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the employment opportunities of Jammu are going to “those coming from outside.”

“Article 370 was brought not only for the people of Kashmir but to also protect the Dogra people too…Today, employment opportunities here are going to those coming from outside,” he said.

“Fingers were raised on our National Conference leaders who were Muslims and they were branded as Pakistanis…After 75 years, the people have understood that the National Conference is for the people,” he added.

He alleged that PDP was responsible for the abrogation of Article 370.

“PDP was responsible for article 370 abrogation. I had suggested Mufti (Mufti Mohammad Sayeed) not to ally with BJP. But he did not agree,” he said.

When asked about the NC’s relations with its alliance partner Congress in the UT, he said, “What doe the Congress want from us…We are giving all due respect to them. J-K Government will continue as it is and no one can dictate terms on this Government.” (ANI)

A mysterious illness has struck the Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in 17 deaths. Medical authorities have rushed to the area to investigate the cause of the illness.

According to Dr Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, Principal GMC Rajouri, a common factor among the deaths is the involvement of the brain and damage to the nervous system.

“Forensic departments from Chandigarh and Lucknow, and teams from MHA are present here. A common factor in all the deaths is the involvement of the brain and damage to the nervous system,” Dr Bhatia said.

He also emphasised the recovery rate of the people affected by this ‘unidentified disease.’ “Out of 9 patients that were admitted to GMC Rajouri, 5 recovered. We have conducted preventive CT scans also, but recovery becomes tough once the brain gets involved,” Bhatia said.

“We are hoping to find the cause (behind the illness) soon. We will educate the people and raise awareness among them like not to exchange foods,” he added.

While the exact cause of the illness remains unknown, authorities have ruled out bacterial or viral infections. The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has assured citizens that the health department, along with other departments, is working to understand the causes behind the incidents.

On Tuesday, JK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Rajouri’s Badhal and assured citizens affected by the disease.

CM Abdullah told reporters, “The day when we got the information, the health department along with other departments have been working to understand the causes behind such incidents… Tests were done, and we reached the conclusion that there were no bacteria or viruses – that caused those deaths.”

“Later, we found that all those deaths happened in three families,” he added. He said that the authorities are yet to ascertain the cause behind these deaths.

“But, we are yet to find the reason behind 17 deaths… Since it’s not a disease, police are also involved in it and they have formed a team to investigate the matter. Central govt team is also there – and we together will look into the incidents to find the reason behind all these deaths…,” CM Omar Abdullah added.

An inter-ministerial team led by the Ministry of Home Affairs has been constituted to investigate the causes of the unexplained deaths. The team includes experts from forensic departments in Chandigarh and Lucknow.

The Pataudi family has a large amount of property in Bhopal, which includes land and historical buildings. This property originally belonged to the Nawabs of Bhopal, and after their death, it was passed down to their heirs. The term “enemy property” refers to the property of people who moved to Pakistan after India’s partition in 1947 and gave up their Indian citizenship. He argued that his family had the right to the property because he was the heir to it. The court granted a stay on the property, meaning the government could not take control of the land during the legal process.

However, after years of legal battles, the Madhya Pradesh High Court made its final decision on December 13, 2024. The court dismissed Saif Ali Khan’s petition and lifted the stay on the property. This means that the property can now be taken over by the government unless Saif Ali Khan or his family takes further action.

The Pataudi family’s property in Bhopal is said to be worth around Rs 15,000 crore. This includes valuable land and historic buildings related to the Bhopal princely state. The family’s property spans areas like Kohefiza and Chiklod in Bhopal.

This statement came after former President Donald Trump, during a rally, threatened to cut off U.S. financial assistance to Afghanistan unless the country returned U.S. military equipment, including aircraft, air-to-ground munitions, vehicles, and communications gear.

Trump said, “If we’re going to pay billions of dollars a year, tell them we’re not going to give them the money unless they give back our military equipment.”

The Taliban, however, did not respond directly to Trump’s comments.

When U.S. troops withdrew from Afghanistan after two decades of military presence, they left behind weapons valued at around $7 billion. Shortly afterward, the Taliban seized control of the country. Despite rejecting Trump’s demands, the Taliban has expressed a desire to build a fresh relationship with the U.S., particularly to access nearly $9 billion in frozen foreign reserves.
