Sakeena Itoo Backs Teachers’ Dignity, Says Mandatory Tests Should Not Add to Their Mental Pressure
Education Minister Sakeena Itoo has stressed the need to protect the dignity, self-respect and mental well-being of teachers, saying mandatory tests should not come at the cost of their honour.
Speaking on Teachers’ Day, Itoo addressed the ongoing debate over the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and said test scores should not be imposed in a way that affects teachers’ self-respect. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
She said teachers are already facing considerable stress and mental pressure, which can have a direct impact on the classroom environment and children’s learning.
“A teacher who prepares thousands of children for examinations is fully capable of taking a test. However, imposing such testing in a manner that challenges their self-respect can add to the mental burden faced by teachers,” she said.
Itoo said she would take the matter to court before bringing a resolution before the Legislative Assembly. She expressed confidence that the proposed resolution would be passed by a majority.
According to the Education Minister, the move would seek to protect teachers’ dignity and reduce unnecessary pressure, enabling them to concentrate fully on teaching and guiding students.
Highlighting the wider role of teachers, Itoo said parents send their children to school with the trust that teachers will educate and guide them.
She said teachers do much more than provide formal education, as they also play an important role in helping children learn how to communicate, develop confidence and understand life.
Itoo described teachers as an important force in shaping society and said their contribution could never be fully recognised through words of praise alone.
On Teachers’ Day, she extended her greetings to the teaching community and acknowledged the achievements and contribution of educators across Jammu and Kashmir. She also stressed the importance of creating a supportive environment in which teachers can perform their responsibilities effectively.
The Education Minister also highlighted progress in the education sector in Jammu and Kashmir. She said that after individual districts were initially declared, 100 per cent full coverage has now been formally declared by the Education Department along with the Chief Minister.
Itoo maintained that reducing unnecessary mental pressure on teachers would allow them to focus on their primary responsibility of educating, supporting and guiding children.
