Gor made the remarks during his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir, where he met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and discussed ways to strengthen engagement between the United States and the Union Territory.

Gor Praises Kashmir’s Beauty and Security Improvements

Speaking about his visit, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and praised the region’s natural beauty.

“It’s a pleasure to be here. This is an important part of India. It’s my first time. It’s a beautiful place and I’m thrilled to be here,” he said.

The US envoy described his meetings in Jammu and Kashmir as productive and said discussions would continue at higher levels in New Delhi and Washington.

“We had beautiful meetings. We hope to take follow-ups to Delhi and Washington,” Gor said.

Gor did not make any major announcement during the visit but acknowledged the security improvements made by authorities.

“I cannot make big announcements today,” he said, while praising the steps taken by New Delhi and the Chief Minister to improve security.

“Delhi and CM have made incredible steps to keep it safer and more safer,” Gor said.

US Travel Advisory for Kashmir Could Be Downgraded

One of the key issues discussed in the context of greater US engagement with Jammu and Kashmir was Washington’s travel advisory for Americans visiting the region.

Gor indicated that the advisory could be reviewed as the security situation improves.

“We will see about the advisory and it should be downgraded,” he said.

The Ambassador also suggested that there was significant interest among Americans in visiting Jammu and Kashmir if security concerns and travel restrictions were eased.

“A lot of Americans would like to come here,” Gor said.

His remarks could be significant for Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry, which has been seeking greater international confidence and a stronger return of foreign tourists.

Omar Abdullah Calls Meeting ‘Very Good’

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described his meeting with the US Ambassador as “very good”.

He said the discussions covered India-US relations as well as areas where the United States could contribute to Jammu and Kashmir.

“It was a very good meeting. We discussed relations between the two countries and what the US can do for us,” Abdullah said.

The Chief Minister said the discussions also covered “legacy issues” that continue to require attention.

“We have legacy issues which we will be talking to resolve,” Omar said.

He expressed optimism about the future of engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States.

“We are hopeful and optimistic that the relationship between J&K and the US will go up,” he added.

Focus on Tourism and International Engagement

Gor’s remarks come at a significant time for Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, which is seeking to expand its international footprint and attract more visitors from the United States and other Western countries.

A review or downgrade of the US travel advisory could help improve international confidence in the region and potentially encourage more American tourists to visit Kashmir.

However, Gor did not announce any specific tourism initiative during his visit.

Instead, his comments suggested that further discussions would take place in New Delhi and Washington, with any decision on the travel advisory likely linked to the evolving security situation.

Further India-US Discussions Expected

The US Ambassador’s visit marks an important step in renewed diplomatic engagement with Jammu and Kashmir.

Both Gor and Omar Abdullah struck an optimistic tone following their meeting, with the Ambassador indicating that further discussions would follow and the Chief Minister expressing hope for stronger ties between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States.

Any formal change to the US travel advisory would ultimately depend on Washington’s assessment of the security situation.

For Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry, however, Gor’s indication that the advisory “should be downgraded” could be seen as a potentially positive signal for the return of international visitors.
