Mirwaiz Seeks Impartial Investigation Into Rawalakot Violence, Calls for Dialogue
SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, while addressing the Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, expressed concern over the continuing unrest and reported loss of lives across the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in Rawalakot. In a statement issued after the prayers, the Mirwaiz said his thoughts and prayers were with the people affected by the recent violence.
Calls for Impartial Investigation
The Mirwaiz said reports suggested that dozens of people had been killed during the unrest over the past month and a half, while some accounts placed the overall death toll even higher.
He called for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incidents.
He also expressed condolences for all those who lost their lives, including civilians and members of the police force, and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
“We mourn every life lost and pray for the speedy recovery of all those injured. May Allah grant patience to the bereaved families and guide those entrusted with authority towards justice, wisdom and restraint,” he said.
Emphasises Shared Identity
The Mirwaiz said the recent developments across the LoC highlighted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir remain central to the future of the region.
He said that although different governments administer the two sides of the LoC, the people share common historical, cultural and family ties.
According to the statement, these connections extend to Kashmiris living in Srinagar, Muzaffarabad and across the global diaspora.
Appeal for Dialogue
The Mirwaiz appealed to the Government of Pakistan and the local administration across the LoC to engage in dialogue with representatives of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and other sections of society.
He said lasting peace and stability could be achieved through dialogue, constitutional fairness and respect for the rights and dignity of all people.
Inclusive Approach to Rights
The Mirwaiz also said any public movement should remain inclusive and respect the constitutional rights of every section of society.
He referred to the voting rights and constitutional status of Kashmiri refugees and migrants living in different provinces of Pakistan, saying their rights should not become a matter of political exclusion.
According to the statement, these rights form part of the broader rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and deserve equal protection.
Prayers for Peace
Concluding his address, the Mirwaiz prayed for peace, reconciliation and unity among the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He urged all leaders and governments to uphold justice, human rights and the dignity of every individual, while calling for dialogue to prevail over confrontation and violence.
