Journalists Union of Kulgam (JUoK) and Kulgam Working Journalists Association (KWJA) Demand ‘Press Club’

Journalists Union of Kulgam

In a move to unify media voices in South Kashmir, the Kulgam Working Journalists Association (KWJA) and the Journalists Union of Kulgam (JUoK) held a joint core group meeting today, calling for the establishment of a press club for the welfare of journalists in the district. A 10-member core committee has been established.

This meeting brought both associations together to advocate for a unified platform and a designated space for media professionals in Kulgam, a need that remains unmet.

“A suitable place for media persons to meet, where seniors and juniors can come together to discuss stories for the larger interest of Kulgam, is essential. Today, we stand united in our demand for a ‘Press Club’ for the Kulgam media fraternity,” said a senior KWJA journalist.

A JUoK member said, “A press club in Kulgam is more than a building; it’s a vital resource for journalists who face daily challenges in covering critical stories,This collaboration is about creating a secure, collaborative environment for our community.”

A spokesperson for the core group emphasized, “Our aim is straightforward yet essential: to establish a platform that promotes press freedom, unity, and professional growth. We are optimistic that this unity will bring us closer to that vision.”

The associations appealed to Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Cabinet Minister Sakina Itoo, and other leaders to support the media fraternity’s plea for a press club in Kulgam, which has been a longstanding demand since 2007.(KNS).

Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk and 150 Protesters Detained Again After Release

Sonam Wangchuk

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, along with 150 other protesters from Ladakh, continued their indefinite fast on Wednesday, despite being in detention. They expressed feeling their rights were “trampled upon” on Gandhi Jayanti, a day that symbolises peace and democracy.

Wangchuk was leading the ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’, which began a month ago from Leh, when they were detained on Monday night. On Wednesday morning, Jigmat Paljor, Coordinator of the Apex Body, issued a statement calling the detention illegal, as it had exceeded 24 hours without them being presented before a magistrate.

“We, the ‘padyatris’, find ourselves in a concerning situation. We have been detained for more than 24 hours, and this detention is unlawful, as we should have been produced before a magistrate by now,” Paljor said.

He added that some groups had been released just before the 24-hour period ended, only to be returned to the police station later. “Last night, the police attempted to forcibly relocate us to an unknown location, but we resisted and stood our ground,” he explained.

The protestors’ phones have been confiscated at the Bawana Police Station, cutting them off from the outside world, Paljor further mentioned.

However, Delhi Police stated that the ‘padyatris’ had been released on Tuesday night but were detained again when they attempted to march towards central Delhi. According to a senior police officer, Wangchuk and others were allowed to leave but were adamant about continuing their march, leading to their second detention.

The ‘padyatris’ began their journey from Leh on 1st September, marching most of the way except through Haryana, where they boarded buses due to election restrictions. They were stopped at Delhi’s Singhu border on Monday night and taken to various police stations, where they began their indefinite fast.

“All the ‘padyatris’ have been fasting for 36 hours. On October 2nd, Gandhi Jayanti, we had planned to visit Gandhi Samadhi to pay our respects, but instead, we find our rights crushed on a day dedicated to peace and democracy,” Paljor said.

“This situation raises grave concerns about the current state of democracy in our country. We urge everyone to stand in solidarity with us during this critical time,” he added.

The march was organised by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), has been campaigning for the last four years. They are demanding statehood for Ladakh, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, timely recruitment processes, a public service commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha constituencies for Leh and Kargil districts.

Wangchuk, along with a few others, is being held at the Bawana police station, while others are being detained at police stations in Narela Industrial Area, Alipur, and Kanjhawala, according to Paljor.

Finally Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir to Field Former Members as Independent Candidates in kashmir Assembly Elections

The Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir is set to field its former members as Independent candidates in several seats in the upcoming Assembly polls, The Indian Express has learnt.

Jamaat leaders had earlier said they are waiting for the Centre to lift the ban, in place under the UABASHAARAT MASOOPA since February 2019, with sources saying several rounds of talks had happened with the government. However, on Friday, the UAPA upheld the orders passed by the MHA declaring the Jamaat as an unlawful association under the Act.

Sources in the Jamaat said that following a meeting of its top body, it has been decided to field its former members as Independent candidates. “We have decided to field 10-12 members as Independents,” said a source from the organisation. “These will be in seats where we believe we have considerable support.”

In the first phase, the banned organisation is looking at around half a dozen seats, including Kulgam, Devsar, Bijbehara, Zainpora, Tral, Pulwama and Rajpora in south Kashmir.“We had a threadbare discussion on three options. The first was to form a front and fight under its banner; the second option was to be part of an alliance; and the third was to contest as Independents,” a source privy to the meeting said.

“While being part of any alliance was ruled out, the members were of the opinion that a front can’t be registered within a short time, and in any case such candidates will have to contest as Independents. So we went with the third option,” the source said, adding that those contesting will be former rukn or registered members of the Jamaat.

While the Jamaat has stayed away from the election since 1987, when they last participated under the banner of the Muslim United Front, it is eager to return to electoral politics to show its willingness to enter the mainstream.

“We are called a terror organisation, anti-democracy. We can’t contest elections as Jamaat members but we want to show that we believe in democracy, in the Constitution,” the source said.

“In the coming days, we will also take a decision on seats we will contest in the second and third phases.” A final call on candidates is awaited, sources said.

“We know we have very little time at hand, and by Sunday, we expect to come out with a list of candidates,” said the source. “We don’t know how state will react – whether they will accept the nomination or not.” (Indian Express)
