Apni Party’s Rafi Ahmad Mir Urges J&K Statehood Restoration in Meeting with LG Manoj Sinha

Rafi Ahmad Mir

Apni Party leader Rafi Ahmad Mir on Sunday said that the delegation of the party, during a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, discussed several pressing issues and reiterated the demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

Speaking to ANI, Mir said, “..We apprised them about the situation on the ground and had a discussion on various issues…I am hopeful that all our concerns will be resolved…We also talked about restoring the statehood of J&K…”
The delegation also included senior leader Mohammad Dilawar Mir, who raised concerns about the economic impact of sudden weather changes on tourism-related sectors in the region.
“We discussed various issues in the meeting… A survey should be conducted to assess the damage caused by the sudden change in weather… We urged the Lieutenant Governor to provide relief to hoteliers, taxi owners as their businesses have been affected due to tourists not coming to Jammu and Kashmir… We also discussed issues related to our constituencies,” Mohammad Dilawar Mir informed ANI.
On April 15, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that he is hopeful that Jammu and Kashmir will “regain” the status of a state.
The restoration of Article 370, the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, and the implementation of the autonomy resolution were key promises in the National Conference’s manifesto for the J-K elections.
In August 2019, the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, repealed Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, effectively ending the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. (ANI)

Jamia Masjid Market Opens on Mirwaiz Death Anniversary for First Time in 35 Years, Marking Shift in Downtown Srinagar

Jamia Musjid

In a major shift, historic Jamia Masjid Market in Downtown remained open on May 21 for the first time in 35 years, breaking a decades-old tradition of closure on the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq.

This change was made possible through continued efforts under the community policing initiative by Srinagar Police, in coordination with the Market Association and the Awqaf Committee.

The market had been shut annually on this day since the assassination of the Mirwaiz in 1990. But this year, sustained dialogue and trust-building between police and local stakeholders led to a mutual decision to open the market.

A senior police official told Rising Kashmir, “This wasn’t about forcing a decision. It was about listening, engaging, and working together with the community to strike a respectful balance between tradition and civic life.”

He added that community policing is rooted in partnership, and the cooperation from traders and the Awqaf Committee shows a collective will to move forward, while still honoring the past.

Local shopkeepers shared a similar view, calling the move a step toward stability.“The spirit of remembrance remains,” said one trader, “but we also need to ensure our livelihoods and daily lives are not indefinitely halted.”

Massive Dal Lake–Pahalgam Rally Sends Message of Peace After Deadly Attack

Dal Lake–Pahalgam Rally

With flags fluttering and banners reading “Welcome to Paradise” waving in the May breeze, a caravan of nearly 300 vehicles rolled out from the shimmering banks of Dal Lake on Sunday morning -its destination– Pahalgam, its purpose: hope.

Organized by the tourism community and joined spontaneously by traders, transporters, hoteliers and youth, the Dal Lake to Pahalgam Road Show was a bold, heartfelt response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that 26 tourists dead and entire tourism industry paralysed.

“After April 22, bookings were cancelled overnight,” recalled Amir Majeed, a prominent tour operator and the event organiser. “Hotels were empty, guides were jobless, shikara rides halted mid-lake. But today, this rally is our answer — Kashmir is safe, and Kashmir is ready.”

The April 22 attack, a shocking act of violence in the tourist-frequented Pahalgam area, sent ripples of fear across the region. Tourists packed their bags, local businesses shut their shutters, and an uneasy silence fell over the valley’s most visited destinations. For an economy already healing post-pandemic and conflict-related slumps, the blow was profound.

But Kashmir’s spirit is resilient. Manzoor Kundroo, another stakeholder who drove all the way in a decorated van from Dal Lake, said, “We are not just telling tourists to come — we are telling them that the people of Kashmir stand united for peace. The doors of our homes are open, our hearts are open.”

As the rally made its way through Anantnag, Bijbehara and Mattan, hundreds lined the roads, waving to the vehicles, offering snacks and shouting slogans like “Aman Ka Paigham — Kashmir Ki Shaan!” (A message of peace — the pride of Kashmir!)

Riyaz Ahmed, a hotelier from Srinagar who joined the rally with his team, said, “It’s not just about business. It’s about identity. Tourism is the lifeline of Kashmir’s economy — but more than that, it’s the lifeline of our connection to the world.”

Security has been beefed up significantly post the April attack, with added checkpoints, surveillance, and joint patrols in tourist zones. Officials say confidence-building measures are ongoing to reassure tourists.

By the time the caravan reached Pahalgam, the meadows were alive with color and song again. Locals had laid out traditional Kehwa and snacks, children waved flags of peace, and folk artists performed Rouf dances — a symbolic celebration of return, renewal and resilience.

“This is the Kashmir I want my children to grow up in,” said Waseem Ahmad, a young travel blogger live-streaming the event. “A place of peace, culture, and unmatched beauty. Not headlines of fear.”

After Operation Sindoor: Cross-Border Shelling Destroy Homes in Uri’s Salamabad

Uri’s Salamabad

Salamabad, a small border village in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, has been left in ruins following intense shelling from across the Line of Control. The shelling began shortly after the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure across the border.

As the shelling intensified, powerful blasts ripped through the village, tearing off the roofs of homes and setting buildings ablaze. Several houses were reduced to smouldering debris, with flames engulfing entire neighbourhoods. Many residents have been wounded, and some remain missing amid the chaos.

In fear for their lives, the majority of Salamabad’s residents have fled the area, seeking safety in nearby towns and temporary shelters. Only a few have stayed behind, either to protect what remains of their property or due to the lack of transport options.

Local authorities have suspended classes in all schools across five border districts as a safety measure, and emergency services are on alert. The Indian Army continues to respond to the shelling, but the situation remains volatile.

The displaced families now face an uncertain future, hoping for both immediate relief and a lasting resolution to the violence that has disrupted their lives.

Kashmiri Youth Drive for Peace: Car Rally in Pahalgam Sends Strong Message of Unity After Terror Attack

Car Rally in Pahalgam

After the tragic terrorist attack on April 22 that shook Pahalgam, fear has replaced the usual sound of tourists.Streets that were once busy now stand quiet, and with tourism stopped, the local economy is struggling. But recently, this silence was broken — not by fear, but by the roar of engines and a show of unity.

A group of young men from Srinagar drove through the empty roads of Pahalgam in a convoy of luxury cars, each car carrying bold stickers with the message “United Against Terror.” Their message was clear: Terror will not define Kashmir. Peace, strength, and solidarity will. Their effort was a heartfelt gesture to reclaim the dignity of their homeland and to reassure fellow citizens that Kashmir still welcomes visitors with open arms.

Speaking to ANI, Imtiyaz, one of the participants from Srinagar, said: “What happened here was truly unfortunate. That’s why we came here, we don’t represent any foundation or organisation, we’re just a group of friends. We came to raise awareness and express our deep sorrow over what happened in Kashmir. We want people to continue trusting this place. It may take some time, but everyone needs to support one another.”

He added, “Everyone has their own way; some are athletes, while others have different platforms. We wanted to use ours to spread awareness. Cars are something with which we feel a deep connection. What we did was entirely within the law. We’re car enthusiasts, and the people who’ve visited here will come again because they know we’ll always welcome them.”

Kabir, another participant in the rally, told ANI, “We belong to Srinagar. We came here, because we run a small group that goes on drives to nearby places. So, everyone got together and said, ‘We need to put out a message in the media and on social media that Kashmir is not being portrayed as it’s right now.’ Kashmiris are not terrorists. Everywhere, we’re being questioned. Our kids are outside, my nephew is outside, and so many of my friends have children studying or working outside. They’re being beaten up. Just because a few people came here and committed acts of violence, killing innocent people, that doesn’t mean all Kashmiris are responsible.”

He further said, “Since yesterday, many of my friends have called asking how to reach Pahalgam, as everything is shut and closed. So we thought, let’s go ourselves and show that if we can get there, so can you, and put an end to all this fear.”

“We’ll post reels of our cars and share photos to show that we are in Kashmir, specifically in Pahalgam. Everything is normal. We came in luxury cars, and no one troubled us. No one is bothering anyone. People are blaming the police, saying they aren’t letting people go, and blaming the army. But it’s all being told by people sitting outside, who don’t know the ABC of what’s happening here. We’re trying to convey a message: ‘Give Kashmir another chance.'”

Whatever happened, whoever suffered it was wrong. I’ll repeat it, Hindu or Muslim, that’s a different thing. First and foremost, human beings died. That’s why we came here, because every human life matters.”

While Zuhaib Khan said, “Look, the main motive behind coming in these cars was to send a message that neither Hinduism nor Islam permits what happened. You are all aware of the incident that occurred in Pahalgam, and we want to express to our brothers that we too are ashamed and deeply saddened by the tragedy that has befallen them.”

“So my humble request to them is, please come to Kashmir. Your decision not to come here is a defeat for this place. If you don’t come, those who caused this will feel like their mission was successful. That’s why you must show that Kashmir is ours, it always was, and it always will be. That’s the message we want to continue spreading”, he said.

He added further, “We chose cars because we wanted to attract people’s attention to show them that if we can come here, so can you. There’s no issue here. I’ve noticed that tourists are moving around freely and seem to feel very safe. They told us they have no problems here and that locals have been very supportive. We’re really glad you came here in support of us.”

Their peaceful rally, held without banners or politics, sent a clear message: terror will not define Kashmir; unity will.–(ANI)

Brave Pony Operator Syed Adil Hussain Shah Killed Trying to Disarm Terrorist in Pahalgam Attack

Syed Adil Hussain Shah

As tourists scrambled to escape bullets being fired by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday, a pony ride operator displayed extraordinary courage as he tried to snatch the rifle from one of the terrorists.

Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who ferried tourists on his horse from the car parking to the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam that is accessible only by foot, was shot dead during his attempt to fight one of the terrorists. He had tried to protect the tourist he had brought to the spot.

The terrorists, reportedly choosing their targets after asking them their religion and making them recite an Islamic verse, went on to kill 26 tourists. Shah was the only local killed in the attack.

Shah was the only breadwinner of the family, which includes his elderly parents, wife and children. The family has appealed for justice.
His father Syed Haider Shah told ANI, “My son went to Pahalgam yesterday to work, and around 3 pm, we heard about the attack. We called him, but his phone was switched off. Later, at 4.40 pm, his phone turned on, but no one answered. We rushed to the police station, and that’s when we learned that he had been shot in the attack. Whoever is responsible must face the consequences.”

Sajad Lone Slams Move to Book Villagers for Killing Leopard in Self-Defence

Sajad Lone

MLA Handwara and prominent political leader Sajad Lone has strongly criticised the reported move by wildlife authorities to take legal action against around 40 villagers from Batpora, Block Kralpora in Kupwara district, who killed a leopard in self-defence after the animal attacked several people.

The controversy follows a viral video showing a leopard aggressively attacking locals in the area. Residents said the animal had posed a serious threat to human life, having injured several people in recent days. In a desperate effort to protect themselves and their families, the villagers eventually managed to overpower the leopard during a tense encounter. The animal, reportedly behaving like a man-eater, was fatally injured and died shortly after.

Sajad Lone, reacting strongly to the news of legal action against the villagers, labelled the move as “nonsense.” In his official statement, he questioned the rationale behind the decision, asking if the villagers were expected to sacrifice themselves to a wild animal in the name of conservation.

“We all understand the importance of wildlife, but human life is important as well,” Lone said. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach that respects wildlife without ignoring the safety of local communities.

Locals echoed Lone’s sentiments, expressing shock and disappointment at the proposed action. “We had no choice. The leopard kept attacking people, and authorities failed to respond in time,” said one resident. Others added that the community had been living in constant fear due to the animal’s aggressive behaviour.

Wildlife officials have not issued a formal statement yet, but sources suggest an investigation is underway. However, growing public support for the villagers and political pressure may force a rethink of the legal action.

The incident has sparked a broader debate in Kashmir about wildlife management and the responsibilities of authorities in ensuring both animal conservation and human safety—especially in rural areas where such encounters are becoming more frequent.

As the situation unfolds, residents of Batpora continue to demand that the authorities drop any charges and instead focus on proactive measures to prevent future wildlife threats.

Elderly Kolkata Man Loses Rs 2.6 Lakh to ‘Facebook Friend’ in Kashmir Trip Scam

Kashmir Trip Scam

In an era where social media connects people across the globe, it also opens doors for cybercriminals to exploit trust. A 73-year-old man from Kestopur, Kolkata, fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing Rs 2.6 lakh to a woman he befriended on Facebook. The scam unfolded during a planned trip to Kashmir, highlighting the vulnerabilities of elderly individuals to online fraud. This article delves into the details of the incident, the modus operandi of the scammer, and the broader implications for digital safety.

The Incident: A Tale of Trust and Deception

The victim, a senior citizen from Kolkata’s Kestopur area, developed an online relationship with a woman he met on Facebook. Over time, their virtual bond grew, leading to plans for a joint trip to Kashmir starting April 1, 2025. The trip, initially perceived as a shared adventure, became the backdrop for a carefully orchestrated scam.

During the journey, the man entrusted his handbag, which contained his State Bank of India (SBI) debit card, to the woman. This act of trust proved costly. After returning to Kolkata on April 9, the victim’s son noticed unauthorized transactions totaling Rs 2,59,500 between April 10 and 14. Upon checking, the man discovered that his debit card had been swapped with another from a different bank. The woman had allegedly used the card to siphon off the funds.

The victim had shared his debit card PIN with the woman during the trip when he fell ill and needed assistance. This moment of vulnerability was exploited, allowing the scammer to execute the unauthorized transactions. Despite attempts to contact her, the woman remained unresponsive, cutting off all communication.

Police Action and Investigation

Distraught by the financial loss, the victim lodged a complaint at the Baguiati police station. The police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, for cheating and criminal breach of trust. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman is married and resides in Agarpara, a suburb of Kolkata. The police are actively pursuing leads to trace her and recover the stolen funds.

The case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in tackling cyber-enabled fraud, where perpetrators exploit personal relationships and physical proximity to carry out their schemes. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover whether the woman acted alone or as part of a larger network.

The Modus Operandi: Exploiting Trust

This scam highlights a common tactic used by cybercriminals: building trust through prolonged online interactions. The woman likely spent weeks or months cultivating a relationship with the victim, creating a false sense of familiarity and security. By proposing a joint trip, she gained physical access to the victim’s belongings, enabling her to swap the debit card and misuse it.

The use of a shared PIN during a moment of illness further illustrates how scammers exploit vulnerabilities. Elderly individuals, who may be less familiar with digital security practices, are particularly susceptible to such tactics. The swapped debit card—a physical card from another bank—ensured the victim remained unaware of the fraud until the transactions were discovered by his son.

Broader Context: Rising Cybercrime Targeting the Elderly

This incident is not isolated. Cybercrime targeting senior citizens is on the rise, with social media platforms like Facebook serving as fertile ground for scammers. According to reports, elderly individuals are often targeted due to their perceived trustfulness, limited technological literacy, and substantial savings. In 2024 alone, India saw numerous cases of online fraud, with losses running into crores of rupees.

For instance, a 72-year-old man from East Delhi lost Rs 40 lakh in a cryptocurrency scam after being lured by a social media advertisement. Similarly, a 58-year-old Kolkata resident was duped of Rs 20 lakh in an online investment scam that began with a Facebook ad. These cases highlight the diverse methods scammers employ, from fake investment schemes to impersonation and, as in this case, personal betrayal.

The Kashmir trip scam also reflects a hybrid approach, combining online deception with real-world interactions. By meeting the victim in person, the scammer added a layer of authenticity to the fraud, making it harder for the victim to suspect foul play until it was too late.

Lessons Learned: Protecting Against Social Media Scams

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in online interactions. Here are key takeaways to protect against similar scams:

  1. Verify Identities: Always verify the identity of online acquaintances, especially before meeting in person or sharing personal information. Be cautious of individuals who avoid video calls or provide vague details about their background.
  2. Safeguard Financial Information: Never share debit or credit card PINs, passwords, or other sensitive information, even with trusted individuals. Use secure methods like UPI or mobile apps for transactions when assisting others.
  3. Monitor Accounts: Regularly check bank statements and enable SMS or email alerts for transactions. Prompt detection of unauthorized activity can limit financial losses.
  4. Be Skeptical of Offers: Be wary of unsolicited friend requests, overly friendly strangers, or lucrative opportunities that seem too good to be true. Scammers often use flattery or promises of rewards to gain trust.
  5. Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect fraud, report it to the police and your bank immediately. In India, the cybercrime helpline (1930) provides assistance for reporting online fraud.
  6. Educate the Elderly: Families should educate elderly members about digital safety, including the risks of sharing personal information online or with strangers met through social media.

The Emotional and Financial Toll

Beyond the financial loss of Rs 2.6 lakh, the victim likely suffered significant emotional distress. For a senior citizen, losing hard-earned savings to someone they trusted can be devastating. The betrayal of a perceived friendship, coupled with the stress of navigating a police investigation, adds to the trauma.

This case also highlights the importance of family support. The victim’s son played a crucial role in detecting the fraud, underscoring the need for younger family members to monitor the financial activities of elderly relatives, especially those active on social media.

Conclusion

The story of the elderly Kolkata man duped of Rs 2.6 lakh is a cautionary tale about the dangers lurking in the digital world. As social media continues to bridge distances, it also creates opportunities for scammers to exploit trust and vulnerability. This incident calls for greater awareness, stronger digital literacy, and proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly.

The Baguiati police’s investigation may bring justice to the victim, but prevention remains the best defense. By fostering skepticism, safeguarding personal information, and staying informed about common scams, individuals can reduce their risk of falling prey to cybercriminals. As technology evolves, so must our strategies to stay safe in an interconnected world.

Kashmir Forest Fires Expose Lack of Equipment, Safety Gear for Frontline Workers

Kashmir Forest Fires

As forest fires continue to engulf large parts of Kashmir, the crisis has laid bare a worrying reality — frontline workers from the Forest, Wildlife, and allied departments are battling the flames with little more than sticks, spades, and their bare hands. With no access to modern firefighting equipment or basic protective gear, these workers are risking their lives to protect the region’s fragile forests.

The Valley has witnessed a sharp rise in forest fires in recent weeks, fuelled by prolonged dry weather, rising temperatures, and unregulated camping and human activity. From Lidder and Kokernag to Shangus and Tral, large swathes of forest land have been affected, resulting in extensive damage to biodiversity and green cover.

But the firefighting response has been alarmingly underprepared. Employees tasked with controlling the flames say they have no specialised tools — not even gloves, helmets, or fire-resistant clothing. “We don’t have any equipment for firefighting,” said a group of low-rank employees who wished to remain anonymous. “We are handed sticks and spades and told to stop the fire. Sometimes, not even that.”

One casual labourer shared a particularly harrowing experience: “While everyone was celebrating Eid, we were in the jungles, fighting fires through the night. We weren’t given gloves, jackets or even proper shoes. We risk our lives every time, and yet our wages are often delayed for months.”

Besides the Forest and Wildlife departments, workers from the Social Forestry Department and Forest Protection Force (FPF) have also been actively participating in firefighting efforts. But the lack of proper tools and safety protocols has only made the situation more difficult.

A senior forest official, acknowledging the severe gaps, said: “We are facing an acute shortage of equipment. We don’t even have a single fire extinguisher in some divisions.” He listed the essential firefighting tools still missing, including fire beaters, fire hooks, fire blankets, gum boots, fire-resistant suits, gloves, breathing apparatus, water hoses, and fire suppression tools.

Despite the challenges, many of these workers continue to show up, driven by a sense of duty and love for nature. Local volunteers have also joined in, lending a helping hand during major fires, but the absence of trained personnel and proper safety measures only increases the risk of injury and exhaustion.

Chief Conservator of Forests, Irfan Rasool, stated that some basic tools are provided and said, “A spade is quite effective in preventing fire from spreading.” However, he also admitted that casual labourers often go without essential safety gear such as fire jackets, gloves, and boots — essentials in any firefighting scenario.

The ongoing situation calls for urgent government attention. Experts say a robust and well-funded forest fire control mechanism is the need of the hour. This includes the procurement of modern firefighting tools, training for frontline workers, timely disbursal of salaries, and proper safety equipment to prevent avoidable injuries and fatalities.

As the fires continue to blaze and the forests of Kashmir suffer irreversible damage, the bravery of these under-equipped workers is commendable — but it should not come at the cost of their safety or dignity.
