Jammu: A birthday celebration turned deadly in Jammu after a man was allegedly stabbed to death following a dispute over cake-smearing, with police apprehending two brothers in connection with the incident within hours.
According to a police handout issued to GNS, Police Post GMC Jammu informed Police Station Janipur that Pawan Nair alias Sameer had been brought to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu in an injured condition by his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh and Sugandh Bhatti. Doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.
Following the information, a police team from Police Station Janipur rushed to GMC Jammu and began an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Dispute began during birthday celebration
Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident took place on 17 September 2026 during a birthday celebration near Lower Roop Nagar.
Police said Neeraj alias Anshu was celebrating his birthday in the roadside area, where his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh, Sugandh Bhatti and Pawan Nair alias Sameer were present. Neeraj’s brother, Rishu, was also reportedly at the spot.
During the cake-cutting ceremony, Pawan allegedly smeared cake on Neeraj’s face, following which the two became involved in a verbal argument.
Police said John, Gaurav and Sugandh attempted to intervene and calm the situation. However, Neeraj allegedly became enraged, took out a khokhri he was carrying and attacked Pawan on the neck, causing serious injuries.
Pawan was immediately taken to GMC Jammu by his friends, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Two brothers apprehended
Police have registered an FIR under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Janipur and initiated an investigation.
Acting promptly, police apprehended Neeraj alias Anshu and his brother Rishu. Both are currently in police custody at Police Station Janipur, according to the police.
The weapon allegedly used in the crime, described by police as a khokhri, is being recovered.
The deceased’s body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events and determine the individual roles of those involved.
Jammu Police said it would take strict and time-bound action in accordance with the law.
