The proposed package includes 48 F-35 aircraft and 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, along with communications equipment, training, spare parts, logistical support and other related systems.

The US State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to deter current and future threats, improve its homeland defence capabilities and enhance interoperability with US and allied forces.

Washington also said the proposed deal would improve Saudi Arabia’s air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities and would not alter the military balance in the region.

If completed, the agreement would mark the first delivery of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.

The proposed transaction still requires the US congressional review process and does not mean that the aircraft have already been delivered.
