Aga Ruhullah’s Facebook Account Row Reaches Delhi High Court, Notice Issued to Meta
New Delhi, September 1: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notice on a petition filed by Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, challenging restrictions imposed on his Facebook account. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The matter was heard by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma after Mehdi’s counsel told the court that access to the MP’s Facebook page had been completely restricted without any prior notice.
According to Live Law, the counsel appearing for Meta Platforms told the court that the page had been taken down following a notice issued by a law enforcement agency. Meta sought additional time to place the notice before the court.
Mehdi challenges Facebook restriction
Mehdi’s counsel argued that the MP had not been informed about the alleged violation or the reasons behind the restriction imposed on his Facebook account.
The counsel further submitted that Meta was required to follow the grievance redressal mechanism prescribed under the Information Technology Rules.
The court was told that Mehdi had already approached Meta’s grievance redressal officer but had not received a response within the stipulated 24-hour period.
The petitioner’s counsel also argued that Meta had not identified any specific content on Mehdi’s Facebook page as objectionable.
Court seeks replies from respondents
After hearing the submissions from both sides, the Delhi High Court issued notice to the respondents and directed them to file their replies.
The court has listed the matter for further hearing on September 30.
The case concerns the restriction of the Facebook account of the J&K MP and raises questions over the procedure followed before restricting access to a social media account, including notice and grievance redressal requirements.
