New Delhi: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in northwest Delhi, with police arresting four people in connection with the case, including three juveniles.
According to police, the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a tempo before being stabbed to death. Her body was subsequently dumped in an open field in the Swaroop Nagar area.
The case came to light on September 13 when the girl’s decomposed body was discovered near Jaipal Rana’s field along Kushak Road. Police said the body had deteriorated so severely that its gender could not initially be established. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Investigators also found that stray dogs had damaged parts of the body, while one hand was discovered separately.
Police said the victim and the suspects were known to each other. She had allegedly been travelling with them in a tempo when the incident occurred. Investigators said the group had been drinking inside the vehicle before the alleged assault and murder.
The girl had not been reported missing by her family. Police said her relatives told investigators that she would sometimes leave home and return several days later.
A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
CCTV footage helped investigators trace the suspects
With no apparent eyewitnesses and the identities of the alleged perpetrators initially unknown, police teams began examining CCTV footage from the area.
Investigators analysed more than 50 CCTV cameras covering the suspected crime scene and surrounding routes. During the investigation, a tempo was identified moving near the area around the relevant time.
Its registration number could not initially be read clearly because of poor visibility and darkness. Police subsequently tracked the vehicle’s movements through CCTV cameras installed at different locations.
A night-long search operation was conducted during the intervening night of September 15 and 16, leading investigators to trace the suspected tempo.
Police identified and questioned its driver, after which the investigation led to the apprehension of four people allegedly linked to the crime.
One adult and three juveniles apprehended
The adult accused has been identified by police as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony.
The other three suspects are juveniles aged 16 and 17, police said.
Investigators said they recovered two knives allegedly used in the crime, clothing allegedly worn by the suspects and the tempo believed to have been involved.
Police said further investigation is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events, establish the individual roles of those apprehended and verify forensic and technical evidence.
The case remains under investigation.
