Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Calls August 5 a ‘Painful Reminder’, Urges Dialogue and Justice for J&K
Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday described August 5 as a “painful reminder” of the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, alleging that the Government of India had unilaterally altered the region’s constitutional status.

Criticism of the 2019 Constitutional Changes
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq alleged that the constitutional changes further reduced the political and constitutional powers of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He also claimed that the developments amounted to what he described as a “multi-pronged assault” on the identity, character and rights of the people of the region.
“August 5 is a painful reminder of the constitutional changes of 2019, which, in our view, altered Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status and further disempowered its people,” the Mirwaiz said in his statement.
Praises People’s Resilience
Despite his criticism of the 2019 developments, Mirwaiz said the people of Jammu and Kashmir had demonstrated resilience during the past several years.
He said they had continued to safeguard what he described as their identity while standing up for their rights through peaceful means.
Calls for Dialogue
Expressing hope for the future, the Mirwaiz urged the Government of India to engage with the people of Jammu and Kashmir through dialogue based on justice, sincerity and mutual respect.
Referring to the principles of “Insaniyat” (humanity) and “Jamhooriyat” (democracy), he said these values should guide future engagement with the region.
Background
On 5 August 2019, the Union Government revoked Article 370, which had granted special constitutional status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and reorganised it into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Government of India has maintained that the constitutional changes strengthened national integration, improved governance and accelerated development.
Several regional political parties and separatist leaders, including the Mirwaiz, have continued to oppose the decision, arguing that it affected Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional position and political rights.
