US Ambassador Sergio Gor Begins First J&K Visit, Set for Talks with Omar Abdullah
A team of US diplomats from the American Embassy in New Delhi met National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah at his residence in Srinagar on Tuesday, a day before US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor’s maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
The visiting officials reached the Valley ahead of schedule as part of preparations for the Ambassador’s visit. The team included Ian Michael Dick, Gary Applegarth, Lisa Grace Alkins and Hemant Joshi.
According to sources, the meeting focused on Gor’s planned engagement with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Sergio Gor to Meet Omar Abdullah and Manoj Sinha
US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who also serves as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, is scheduled to arrive in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon.
During his stay, he is expected to hold separate meetings with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Gor will spend the night in Srinagar before travelling to Ladakh on Thursday.
The visit is Gor’s first trip to Jammu and Kashmir since he took charge as the 27th US Ambassador to India in January 2026. It also marks the first visit by a serving US Ambassador to J&K since the region was reorganised as a Union Territory in 2019.
Officials said an advance team from the Ambassador’s office had already reached Srinagar to finalise logistics and security arrangements.
First Meeting with a J&K Chief Minister in More Than 15 Years
Gor’s proposed meeting with Omar Abdullah is significant as it would be the first meeting between a serving US Ambassador and a sitting J&K Chief Minister in more than 15 years.
The last such meeting took place in March 2011, when then US Ambassador Timothy Roemer met Omar Abdullah, who was Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir at the time.
Jammu and Kashmir was a state then. It was reorganised as a Union Territory in 2019.
Gor’s meeting with Omar therefore marks a return to direct engagement between a US Ambassador based in New Delhi and J&K’s elected government.
Previous US Ambassador Visits to Kashmir
The last US Ambassador to visit J&K was Donald Blome in 2022. At the time, Blome was serving as the US Ambassador to Pakistan and had visited Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, prompting a strong protest from New Delhi.
The last standalone visit to Kashmir by a US Ambassador based in New Delhi was made by Kenneth Juster in August 2018, shortly after the fall of the PDP-BJP government.
Juster met then Governor Narinder Nath Vohra and Omar Abdullah during his visit. He had also travelled to Ladakh a month earlier.
Juster returned to Srinagar in January 2020 as part of a 15-member ambassadorial delegation organised by New Delhi following the August 2019 reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir.
Visit Comes Amid Stronger India-US Engagement
Gor’s visit comes against the backdrop of the deepening strategic partnership between India and the United States.
It also follows recent high-level interactions between Gor and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on issues including counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics.
Before travelling to Jammu and Kashmir, Gor had engaged with political leadership in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, giving his visit a wider diplomatic context.
Kashmir Leaders Take Note of Visit
Kashmir’s political leadership and civil society have taken note of the Ambassador’s visit, with some voices calling for Gor to engage with a wider cross-section of people during his brief stay.
The visit is also taking place against the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir’s changed political landscape following the 2019 reorganisation and the restoration of an elected government.
The wider strategic significance of Gor’s meeting with Omar Abdullah, however, will depend largely on the issues discussed and the statements issued by both sides.
For now, the visit marks an important diplomatic engagement between the United States and Jammu and Kashmir, particularly as it is Gor’s first visit to the region since becoming US Ambassador to India.
