University of Kashmir Celebrates Amir Khusru’s Legacy with Soulful Sufi Music Concert
The University of Kashmir on Monday organised a special musical programme to celebrate the life and enduring legacy of legendary poet, Sufi saint and musician Amir Khusru. The event featured acclaimed Sufi vocalist Vusat Iqbal of the Delhi Gharana, who captivated the audience with soulful renditions of Khusru’s timeless compositions. The programme was held at the Ibn-e-Khaldun Auditorium and was jointly organised by the Sheikh-ul-Alam Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies, the Pran Kishore Institute of Music and Fine Arts, and the Allama Iqbal Library.
University Registrar Prof Nasir Iqbal, the chief guest, said Amir Khusru’s legacy represents a spiritual tradition that promotes peace, harmony and unity among people from different cultures and communities. He stressed that Khusru’s teachings continue to inspire society by encouraging mutual respect and understanding.
The event was also attended by Syed Riyazuddin Chishti, Director of the Global Sufi Foundation, Ajmer, who participated as the guest of honour.
During the programme, Prof Satish Vimal of the Sheikh-ul-Alam Centre spoke about Amir Khusru’s immense contribution to Sufi philosophy. He highlighted Khusru’s role in fostering dialogue among different faiths, cultures and philosophical traditions, describing his work as a symbol of inclusiveness and spiritual wisdom.
The musical highlight of the evening was a series of Kalam-e-Khusru performances by Vusat Iqbal, whose soulful presentation received warm appreciation from faculty members, scholars, students and invited guests present at the auditorium.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof Aadil Amin Kaak, Chairman of Markaz-e-Noor, who expressed gratitude to the organisers, performers and participants for making the event a memorable tribute to one of India’s greatest Sufi icons.
