PM Modi Forms High-Powered Task Force Led by Nandan Nilekani to Reform India’s Examination System

In a video statement shared on X, the Prime Minister said the task force would study ways to improve the country’s examination process and submit its recommendations to the government.
PM Modi said the government would implement measures based on the panel’s report to ensure the credibility and fairness of future examinations.
Focus on Transparency and Technology
The Prime Minister stressed that India needs an examination system that students can trust.
He said the government wants future examinations to be transparent, reliable and supported by the maximum possible use of technology to prevent irregularities such as paper leaks.
PM Modi also said that those responsible for compromising students’ futures had been arrested and that fast-track courts had been established to speed up legal proceedings.
He added that the government was moving forward with a new law containing stricter legal provisions to tackle examination-related offences.
Announcement Follows Education Minister’s Resignation
The announcement comes a day after protests over alleged examination paper leaks ended following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union Education Minister.
The protests had been led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which demanded greater accountability and reforms in the examination system.
Expert Panel Members
Apart from Nandan Nilekani, the task force includes experts from technology, education, security and public administration.
The members are:
- S. Somanath, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
- Tapan Deka, former Director of the Intelligence Bureau
- V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras
- Anita Karwal, former Education Secretary
- Amrit Lal Meena, logistics expert
The panel will recommend technological improvements as well as structural reforms to strengthen India’s examination system.
About Nandan Nilekani
Nandan Nilekani is one of India’s leading technology entrepreneurs and public policy experts.
He co-founded Infosys and later served as the founding Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which introduced the Aadhaar programme.
He also co-founded the eGov Foundation, which develops digital governance solutions for urban local bodies, and the EkStep Foundation, which focuses on improving literacy and numeracy among children through digital learning platforms.
Nilekani graduated from IIT Bombay and has received several honours, including the Padma Bhushan and the Joseph Schumpeter Prize.
