Procession Follows Historic Route

The religious procession began from Guru Bazar and moved through key areas of the city, including:

  • Budshah Kadal
  • M.A. Road
  • Dalgate

As the procession advanced through Srinagar, mourners paid tribute to Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Battle of Karbala through the recitation of nohas and elegies.

Groups of devotees also performed traditional matam as part of the observance.

Large Participation from Across Kashmir

Men, women and children participated in large numbers, with many travelling from different districts of the Kashmir Valley to join the annual event.

The atmosphere reflected deep religious devotion as mourners gathered to commemorate the sacrifices associated with Karbala.

One participant described the return of the procession to its traditional route as both a spiritual and emotional moment.

“We had waited for years to see this procession return to its historic route. It represents our faith, history and heritage,” he said.

Message of Sacrifice and Justice

Participants said the procession serves as a reminder of the values associated with Karbala, including sacrifice, truth and standing against injustice.

Another mourner noted that the large turnout demonstrated the community’s strong attachment to the legacy of Imam Hussain (R.A.) and the message of Karbala.

Tradition Revived After Decades

The 8th Muharram procession had remained banned on its traditional route for more than 30 years before authorities permitted its revival in 2023.

Since then, the annual procession has once again become a significant religious event, attracting thousands of mourners each year.

Extensive Arrangements for Smooth Conduct

To facilitate the event, authorities put in place comprehensive arrangements across the city.

These included:

  • Enhanced security deployment
  • Traffic management measures
  • Medical assistance facilities
  • Volunteer support services

Officials remained stationed along the route to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the procession.

Procession Continues Towards Dalgate

At the time of reporting, the procession was continuing towards Dalgate, where it was expected to conclude later in the day.

The event once again highlighted the importance of Muharram observances in Kashmir and the enduring connection of mourners with the teachings and sacrifice of Imam Hussain (R.A.).
