Rahul Gandhi Demands PM Modi’s Apology Over Police Action on Students, Seeks Parliament Debate

Speaking outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi said the Prime Minister should address the issue and stop what he described as unnecessary police action against students.
“Why is the Prime Minister silent? He has not even apologised to the students who were beaten by the police. He should speak up and end this,” Gandhi said.
Rahul Gandhi also announced that he and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would visit Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital to meet students who were injured during Monday’s protest.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with other Opposition MPs and demanded a detailed discussion in Parliament on the police action and the examination crisis.
In a post on X, Gandhi said Parliament must discuss what he called the “brutality” against students and the government’s failure to address repeated examination paper leaks. He said students were beaten for asking genuine questions about their future.
“If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India’s youth, then what is Parliament for?” Gandhi asked, adding that the Opposition would continue to raise the issue both inside and outside Parliament.
The controversy follows Monday’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march in Delhi, where thousands of students and supporters gathered to protest over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. The protest led to clashes after police used tear gas and carried out a lathi-charge to stop demonstrators from marching towards Parliament. More than 100 police personnel and over 60 protesters were reported injured.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the government’s handling of the protest. He questioned why students demanding justice were met with tear gas and batons and asked why Parliament had been heavily secured while mobile internet services were suspended in parts of Delhi.
Kharge further demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, saying he should accept moral and political responsibility for the repeated examination paper leak controversy.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for the strictest possible action against those responsible for the NEET paper leak. Speaking after the NDA Parliamentary Party’s ‘Mangal Milan’ meeting, Rijiju quoted the Prime Minister as saying that preventing examination paper leaks was a national responsibility and that India must build a stronger and more reliable examination system.
The issue is expected to remain a major point of confrontation between the government and the Opposition during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
