NDA and Opposition MPs Clash at Parliament Over Student Protests, Amit Shah’s Statement and Ram Temple Donations

The Opposition is demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address Parliament over the police action against student protesters in Delhi. It is also seeking a discussion on allegations concerning the handling of donations linked to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The NDA, meanwhile, accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of avoiding a discussion and questioned his position on police action against protesting students in Jharkhand.
NDA MPs Target Rahul Gandhi
NDA MPs marched towards Makar Dwar carrying posters and raising slogans including “Rahul Gandhi, jawab do” and “Rahul Gandhi, bhago mat”.
The ruling alliance’s protest focused on the recent police action against students in Ranchi, Jharkhand, where candidates protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations faced police action during a march towards the state Assembly.
BJP leaders argued that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress should also answer for events in Jharkhand, where the Congress is part of the ruling alliance led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
BJP MP Anurag Thakur said justice should be delivered to the protesting students and criticised Rahul Gandhi for raising questions about police action in Delhi while remaining silent, according to the BJP’s argument, about the situation in Jharkhand.
Opposition Demands Amit Shah’s Statement
The Opposition has continued to demand an explanation from Home Minister Amit Shah over the police crackdown on students during a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
The government has said that Shah is prepared to respond in Parliament.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government had agreed to the Opposition’s main demand and that the Home Minister was ready to answer questions, provided the House was allowed to function normally.
Rahul Gandhi, however, said the Opposition was not seeking the Home Minister’s “opinion” but wanted answers about who was responsible for the police action against the students.
Priyanka Gandhi and BJP MP Exchange Words
The political confrontation also spilled into a brief verbal exchange between Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and BJP MP Mukesh Dalal.
Dalal was raising slogans against Rahul Gandhi when Priyanka Gandhi approached the area.
According to the exchange reported from Parliament, Priyanka told Dalal that Rahul Gandhi had already met protesting students in Jharkhand and asked the BJP MP to visit the state himself.
Dalal responded by asking why Rahul Gandhi had not gone to Jharkhand over the issue.
Priyanka Gandhi later told reporters that the Opposition’s protest had effectively forced the government MPs to stage a counter-protest.
“This is the first time we have seen government MPs staging a protest,” she said, arguing that the ruling party should now come forward and respond to the issues being raised.
Jharkhand Student Protest Sparks Political Row
The dispute is linked to a protest by JPSC and JSSC-CGL aspirants in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
Jharkhand Police used lathis and water cannons to control protesters during a march towards the state Assembly.
The incident quickly became a political issue at the national level, with BJP MPs accusing Rahul Gandhi of double standards.
The Congress, however, rejected the comparison, arguing that the Jharkhand government is responsible for policing in the state, while Delhi Police comes under the Union Home Ministry.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore said Rahul Gandhi was neither the Chief Minister nor the Home Minister of Jharkhand and therefore could not be held responsible for operational decisions taken by the state police.
Rahul Gandhi Condemns Jharkhand Police Action
Rahul Gandhi has himself criticised the use of force against students in Jharkhand.
He said students have the right to peaceful protest and argued that dialogue should be used to resolve their grievances.
The Congress leader called on the Jharkhand government to continue engaging with the students and address their concerns.
This position has allowed the BJP to argue that the Congress leadership should also answer questions about police action in a state where the party is part of the ruling coalition.
Akhilesh Yadav Calls for Dialogue
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the government’s handling of the parliamentary deadlock and called for dialogue with protesting students.
He argued that issues involving education, examinations and the Ram temple donations controversy should be discussed in Parliament rather than being allowed to fuel further confrontation.
On the Jharkhand issue, Yadav said dialogue was the only way forward, while noting that the state government had expressed its willingness to engage with protesting students.
Parliament Remains Disrupted
The confrontation comes as the Monsoon Session enters its final week, with repeated disruptions limiting the functioning of the Lok Sabha.
Speaker Om Birla has appealed to MPs to allow proceedings to continue, pointing out that the government has agreed to let Amit Shah respond to the Opposition’s concerns.
The continuing dispute over the student protests, the proposed discussion on Ram temple donations and the competing allegations over police action in Delhi and Jharkhand have deepened the political confrontation between the ruling alliance and the Opposition.
