The appointments were announced on Monday through a statement published by Khamenei’s office. The changes are part of a wider reshuffle involving senior Iranian military commanders.
Ali Abdollahi Appointed Armed Forces Chief
Major General Ali Abdollahi has been appointed chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces.
Abdollahi previously served as commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran’s central military command responsible for coordinating operations between different branches of the country’s armed forces.
The Khatam al-Anbiya command plays an important role in coordinating the Iranian Army, IRGC and other security forces during military operations.
Ahmad Vahidi Confirmed as IRGC Commander
Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has also been appointed commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, with his rank raised to major general, according to the announcement.
Vahidi is a veteran IRGC commander and former Iranian defence and interior minister. He has held several senior positions within Iran’s military and security establishment.
The latest announcement formally places Vahidi at the head of the IRGC under Khamenei’s leadership.
First Major Military Appointments by Mojtaba Khamenei
The appointments are particularly significant because they represent Mojtaba Khamenei’s first major senior military appointments since he became Iran’s Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The new leadership structure comes at a time of heightened military tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Khamenei’s decision to appoint experienced IRGC figures to key military positions could strengthen the role of commanders with extensive experience in Iran’s security and military establishment.
Abdollahi’s Strong Warnings During the Conflict
Abdollahi has taken a hard-line position during the current conflict.
Earlier this month, he warned countries in the region against supporting the United States, saying that countries acting as a defensive shield for Washington could become involved in the conflict.
His appointment therefore places an experienced and outspoken military commander at the top of Iran’s armed forces at a particularly sensitive time.
Wider Military Reshuffle
The appointments of Abdollahi and Vahidi were part of a broader reshuffle of Iran’s senior military leadership.
Iran also announced several other changes involving senior commanders, including appointments affecting the Army, IRGC and other important military and security positions.
The reshuffle gives Mojtaba Khamenei greater control over the senior military structure as Iran continues to navigate the ongoing regional conflict.
Why the Appointments Matter
The changes could have important implications for Iran’s military strategy.
With Abdollahi overseeing the wider armed forces structure and Vahidi leading the IRGC, two senior figures with deep military and security backgrounds will occupy crucial positions in Iran’s chain of command.
The appointments also provide an early indication of how Mojtaba Khamenei is beginning to establish his own authority over Iran’s powerful military and security institutions.
