FIR Registered Against Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti After Srinagar Protest

Srinagar: Srinagar Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti, senior party leader Iltija Mufti, and several PDP workers following a confrontation during a protest on Residency Road on 4 August 2026, a day before the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

FIR Registered Under Multiple BNS Sections

According to police, the case has been registered as FIR No. 63/2026 under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

• Section 132 – Assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from performing official duties.
• Section 121 – Voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharging official duty.
• Section 191(2) – Rioting.

Police said the investigation will proceed in accordance with the law.

Police Version of the Incident

According to the police, the protest began at Sher-e-Kashmir Park before demonstrators moved towards Residency Road and attempted to march to Lal Chowk.

Police alleged that officers repeatedly requested the protesters to remain on the footpath to avoid disrupting traffic and maintain public order.

According to the FIR, the situation later escalated when some protesters allegedly pushed through security barricades, leading to a confrontation with security personnel.

Police further alleged that during the scuffle, Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer on duty, resulting in a bleeding injury to his forearm.

The injured officer was shifted to a hospital, where he received medical treatment and medico-legal formalities were completed, according to police.

Iltija Mufti Summoned

Police have issued a summons directing Iltija Mufti to appear before Police Station Kothibagh to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Officials said statements have been recorded and further legal proceedings will follow based on the outcome of the investigation.

PDP Rejects Allegations

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has disputed the allegations contained in the FIR.

The party maintains that its leaders and workers were participating in a peaceful democratic protest to mark the anniversary of the constitutional changes of 5 August 2019 and to oppose restrictions imposed on their movement.

PDP leaders have stated that they were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful protest and have denied the allegations made by the police.

Investigation Continues

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have said further action will be taken in accordance with applicable legal procedures.

No court has yet ruled on the allegations contained in the FIR, and the matter remains under investigation.
