Bombay High Court Convicts Former Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal in 2013 Sexual Assault Case

The verdict was delivered by a Division Bench of Justice Neela Gokhale and Justice Amit Jamsandekar, allowing an appeal filed by the Goa Government against the trial court’s earlier judgment.
High Court Sets Aside Acquittal
The High Court ruled that the trial court had failed to properly assess important evidence and witness testimony presented during the trial.
Tarun Tejpal was convicted under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:
- Section 376(2)(f) and 376(2)(k): Rape by a person in a position of trust, authority or dominance.
- Section 354A: Sexual harassment.
- Section 354B: Assault or use of criminal force with intent to disrobe a woman.
The court held that the evidence supported the prosecution’s case and therefore set aside the acquittal granted in 2021.

The case relates to an incident that allegedly took place in November 2013 during Tehelka magazine’s annual THINK Festival at a hotel in Bambolim, Goa.
A former junior colleague accused Tarun Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel lift during the event.
Following an internal complaint and a police investigation, an FIR was registered and Tejpal was arrested later that month.
