Rahul Gandhi, Kharge and Other Congress Leaders Detained During Protest Outside PM Modi’s Residence
Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday during a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence in New Delhi. The Congress march began from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at Rajaji Marg and proceeded towards 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the Prime Minister’s residence. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had earlier appealed to citizens to join the sit-in, saying students deserved justice and accountability from the government.
During the demonstration, Delhi Police deployed additional security personnel around the Prime Minister’s residence and later detained several Congress leaders and workers, including Rahul Gandhi and other senior party members, before taking them into police custody. The detentions came as protesters refused to end their demonstration.
Before the detentions, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh met Rahul Gandhi in an effort to resolve the standoff. According to Congress leaders, the discussions ended without a breakthrough because the party insisted on a debate in Parliament on the NEET paper leak issue and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Jitendra Singh later claimed Rahul Gandhi had added new demands after the government agreed to a discussion in Parliament.
Addressing supporters through a post on X, Rahul Gandhi accused the government of using force against students and demanded the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said the protest aimed to hold the government accountable for what he described as the “brutality” against young protesters.
The protest followed Monday’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), during which police used tear gas and carried out a lathi-charge after clashes broke out near Parliament. The Congress has demanded a full discussion in Parliament on the alleged examination paper leaks and the police action against students.
