Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid Begins Barefoot March to Parliament, Observes Hunger Strike
Baramulla Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid on Tuesday began a barefoot march from Tihar Jail to Parliament while observing a symbolic hunger strike to highlight what he described as the rights and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
According to his party, the march and hunger strike are intended as a peaceful protest to draw attention to political and public issues affecting Jammu and Kashmir. The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) said the symbolic protest reflects the aspirations of the region’s people and calls for greater attention to their concerns.
Engineer Rashid, who represents the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, remains in judicial custody in a terror-funding case being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He has sought permission from the court to attend the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament while remaining in custody. A Delhi court recently reserved its order on his plea.
Rashid has previously used symbolic hunger strikes to highlight issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir. In December 2025, he observed a one-day fast inside Tihar Jail on International Human Rights Day before attending Parliament under custody parole.
The latest protest comes amid continuing political debate over representation, democratic rights and governance in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters say the barefoot march is meant to peacefully draw national attention to these concerns, while legal proceedings related to Rashid’s custody continue.
