Security forces on Saturday apprehended a terrorist associate in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district and recovered arms and explosive material during a joint operation in the Rajpora area, officials said.
Officials told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) that acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint team comprising Police, Army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF’s 183 Battalion launched a cordon and search operation in the Qasbayar locality along CB Nath Road in Rajpora. During the operation, a suspect identified as Mohammad Umar Malik, a resident of Kachipora, was taken into custody. Officials said that a pistol, a magazine, live ammunition and two hand grenades were recovered from his possession.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 75/2026 at Police Station Rajpora under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), officials added, stating that further investigation is underway.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday dismissed claims about the removal of Urdu, stating clearly that no such decision has been taken and accusing the Peoples Democratic Party of spreading misinformation.
“No Decision Taken on Urdu”
Speaking to reporters in Pampore, Omar Abdullah clarified that the government has only sought public feedback on a proposal and has not approved any final decision. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
“There is no question of dropping Urdu. People should not spread lies,” he said, adding that some individuals were wrongly presenting a proposal as an official decision.
Proposal Still Under Review
The Chief Minister emphasised that the matter is still under consideration and no approval has been given.
He said:
No official order exists regarding removal of Urdu
The communication in question only invited public comments
The file has not been cleared
Abdullah also stressed that even educated people should understand the difference between a proposal and a final decision.
“Feedback Is Part of Democracy”
Highlighting the process, he said that inviting public opinion is a normal democratic step and does not mean implementation.
“Departments may send proposals, but it is the government’s responsibility to evaluate them,” he said.
Criticism of PDP
Omar Abdullah criticised the PDP, accusing it of trying to mislead people by raising an emotional issue.
He alleged that the party was attempting to divert attention and create confusion among the public instead of engaging constructively.
He also referred to past political developments, claiming the PDP had supported the Bharatiya Janata Party during Rajya Sabha elections.
Final Word
The Chief Minister’s statement aims to clear confusion around the issue, reiterating that no decision has been made regarding Urdu and urging people to rely on official information rather than rumours.

Kolkata Police have banned crowds in seven key areas of the city following a night of tension between political rivals. The move comes after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders claimed they saw “suspicious activity” at counting centres where votes from the recent assembly election are being held. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Why the Ban Was Put in Place
The drama kicked off late last night at the Netaji Indoor Stadium. TMC candidates Kunal Ghosh and Shashi Panja led protests at the gates, claiming things weren’t above board. This led to a heated standoff and chanting matches between BJP and TMC supporters. Even Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited a counting centre to check on the “strong rooms” where the ballot boxes are stored.
To keep the peace, police have now restricted gatherings in these locations:
Sahid Kshudiram Bose Road
Judge’s Court Road
Jadavpur
Diamond Harbour Road
Lord Sinha Hall
Naresh Mitra Sarani (Beltala Road)
Pramathesh Barua Sarani
Election Officials Dismiss “Suspicious” Claims
Despite the outcry, West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has cleared up the confusion. He explained that what the TMC called “suspicious” was actually just staff sorting postal ballots.
Because electricity isn’t allowed inside the high-security strong rooms, officials were using torches to see what they were doing in the corridors. Agarwal confirmed that:
All electronic voting machines (EVMs) were sealed in front of witnesses.
Political parties were notified about the ballot sorting via email.
Representatives from both the BJP and TMC have since been shown the secure areas to prove everything is in order.
Following these clarifications, TMC leaders ended their protests and left the sites.

Meta Description: MP Er Rashid reaches Srinagar on bail, meets ailing father at SMHS Hospital amid emotional scenes.
In a deeply emotional moment, Member of Parliament Er Rashid arrived in Srinagar on Thursday after being granted interim bail, and rushed straight to the hospital to meet his critically ill father. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
What followed was not politics… but a quiet, human reunion filled with tears, silence, and longing.
A Son Returns, Not a Politician
The moment his flight landed, Er Rashid did not stop for supporters, cameras or statements.
He went directly to SMHS Hospital — where his father, Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, is undergoing intensive treatment.
Inside the hospital room, witnesses described a scene that words struggle to hold.
A father on a hospital bed. A son standing beside him after a long separation.
And then… tears.
Rashid, known for his strong political voice, broke down as he greeted his father. The two exchanged silent emotions — not speeches, not slogans — just a moment of pure connection.
Bail Granted on Humanitarian Grounds
The emotional visit came after the Delhi High Court granted Rashid interim bail on April 28 for one week.
The court allowed him to visit his ailing father but placed strict conditions:
Meetings limited to close family
No interaction with media
Two plainclothes police officers from Tihar Jail to accompany him
This brief release was not political relief — it was a humanitarian pause.
A Long Journey Between Two Worlds
Er Rashid, president of the Awami Ittehad Party, has been in custody in connection with an alleged terror funding case.
Despite this, he achieved a major political victory in 2024 by defeating Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla-Kupwara parliamentary constituency.
But on this day, none of that seemed to matter.
Not power. Not elections. Not positions.
Only a son… returning to his father.
Appeals That Opened the Door
Several leaders had appealed for Rashid’s temporary release on humanitarian grounds.
Among them, Farooq Abdullah urged the government to allow the MP to meet his critically ill father.
Those appeals turned into a rare moment where law and compassion met.
A Moment Kashmir Watched in Silence
At SMHS Hospital, there were no slogans, no speeches — just quiet emotion.
Witnesses said many present were moved by the scene, as Rashid’s tears reflected a universal truth:
No matter how powerful or controversial a person becomes… some moments reduce everything to family.

Pakistan is facing fresh criticism after reports that it has opened six overland trade routes to Iran, a move some experts say could undermine United States strategy in the ongoing conflict.
The allegations come as Islamabad positions itself as a mediator between the US and Iran, while simultaneously allowing new land-based trade access for Tehran. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Expert Raises ‘Double-Dealing’ Allegation
Derek J Grossman warned that Pakistan’s decision could weaken efforts by former US President Donald Trump to apply economic pressure on Iran.
He said opening these routes could help Iran bypass restrictions linked to the blockade of key maritime trade channels, especially the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Grossman, the move could allow Tehran to continue oil trade and reduce the impact of US-led pressure.
What Pakistan Has Done
Earlier this week, Pakistan officially notified six land transit routes for goods heading into Iran.
The move is seen as an attempt to maintain trade flows amid disruptions in sea routes, particularly as tensions affect shipping through the Arabian Sea region.
Reports suggest thousands of cargo containers at Pakistani ports could now be redirected to Iran through these land corridors.
Questions Over Pakistan’s Role as Mediator
Pakistan’s actions have also raised doubts about its credibility as a neutral mediator in the conflict.
Israel has already questioned Islamabad’s reliability. Its ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, recently said Pakistan may not be a “trustworthy” intermediary.
Even within Iran, concerns have been raised. Ebrahim Rezaei described Pakistan as a friendly country but said it may not be a suitable mediator, suggesting it leans towards US interests.
US Strategy Under Pressure
The US strategy has focused on increasing economic pressure on Iran, including naval restrictions on trade routes, to push Tehran towards accepting American demands.
The situation has increasingly become a prolonged standoff, with Washington preparing for extended pressure measures.
However, analysts say Pakistan’s decision to open land routes could reduce the effectiveness of these efforts by giving Iran alternative trade access.
Growing Geopolitical Tensions
The development highlights the complex position Pakistan holds—balancing ties with both the US and Iran while attempting to play a diplomatic role.
At the same time, it reflects wider geopolitical tensions, where economic routes, trade access and regional alliances are becoming key tools in international conflicts.
Final Word
Pakistan’s move has added a new layer of tension to an already complex situation. While it may help maintain regional trade, critics argue it could weaken pressure strategies and raise further questions about Islamabad’s role on the global stage.
Srinagar Police has registered an FIR against certain individuals for allegedly circulating videos on social media that promote separatist ideology and spread false information, officials said on Thursday.

According to officials, the videos were allegedly intended to incite unlawful activities and pose a threat to public peace, as well as the sovereignty and integrity of India.
Attempt to Spread Secessionist Narratives
A preliminary enquiry indicated that the circulation of such material was not accidental but a deliberate attempt to promote secessionist narratives online.
Officials warned that such content could:
Create public disaffection
Disturb law and order
Undermine national unity
Case Registered Under BNS
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
Section 152
Section 196(1)
Section 353(1)(b), (c) and (2)
The case has been filed at the Cyber Police Station Srinagar.
An official confirmed that FIR No. 11/2026 has been registered and an investigation is currently underway.
Public Advisory Issued
Srinagar Police has urged people to act responsibly on social media and avoid sharing or creating unlawful content.
Authorities warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in spreading such material.
In a historic first since independence, the twin capitals of Jammu and Srinagar have been directly connected by a train service. The milestone was achieved with the launch of the Vande Bharat Express on Thursday.
The train was flagged off by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, marking a major breakthrough in Jammu and Kashmir’s rail connectivity. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
A Historic Milestone Under PM Modi
The development comes under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with officials describing it as a landmark moment nearly 79 years after Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India.
The service was earlier inaugurated on 6 June 2025 but remained limited to the Katra-Srinagar route for several months. The latest extension now connects Jammu directly with Srinagar for the first time.
Full USBRL Route Now Operational
With this launch, the entire 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is now operational between the two capitals.
The mega rail project, completed over more than two decades, has finally enabled seamless and reliable travel through the region’s challenging terrain.
Officials said this is the first time Kashmir has a dependable, all-weather rail link connecting it with the rest of the country, reducing reliance on roads and flights often affected by bad weather.
Faster Travel and Regular Services
Regular train services will begin from 2 May.
Two train pairs will operate:
Train No. 26401/26402: Six days a week (no service on Tuesdays)
Train No. 26403/26404: Six days a week (no service on Wednesdays)
The journey will take around 4 hours and 50 minutes, with future plans to reduce travel time to nearly four hours.
Increased Capacity for Passengers
The new Vande Bharat service has been upgraded to 20 coaches, compared to the earlier 8-coach train running between Katra and Srinagar.
Officials said this decision was taken due to increasing passenger demand on the route.
Plans for Further Expansion
Authorities are planning to expand the service further:
From Budgam to Jammu
From Baramulla to New Delhi
These expansions aim to fully integrate Kashmir with India’s wider railway network.
Passengers Welcome the Service
Passengers on the inaugural journey described the train as a major achievement.
One passenger called it a “gift” and expressed gratitude for improved connectivity.
Others highlighted how the train will help during emergencies and reduce delays caused by landslides or road closures.
Some passengers also requested people to maintain cleanliness inside the train, stressing the importance of protecting public property.
A New Era for Kashmir Travel
The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat marks a turning point for the region:
First direct rail link between the two capitals
Reliable all-weather transport option
Faster and more comfortable travel
Boost to tourism and economic activity
For residents and travellers alike, this new service offers a safer, quicker and more dependable way to move between Jammu and Srinagar.
A dramatic and highly charged session in the United States Congress turned into a full-scale political showdown as lawmakers grilled top defence officials over the ongoing Iran war. What began as a routine hearing on the Pentagon’s budget quickly transformed into an intense question-and-answer battle, exposing deep divisions, sharp accusations, and serious concerns about the war’s direction, cost, and consequences. .Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
From Budget Review to War Interrogation
The hearing of the House Armed Services Committee was officially focused on the proposed $1.5 trillion defence budget. However, the ongoing conflict with Iran dominated the discussion from the very beginning.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine appeared before lawmakers for the first time since the war began. Instead of a technical discussion, they faced a wave of direct, often aggressive questions about military strategy, civilian casualties, and financial costs.
Explosive Question-and-Answer Moments
The most striking feature of the session was the intense Q&A exchanges, where lawmakers repeatedly challenged officials.
“Are We Actually Winning This War?”
Democratic lawmakers pressed Hegseth with a blunt question: Is the United States truly winning the war against Iran?
Hegseth responded confidently, calling it a “remarkable military success.” However, this claim was immediately challenged by lawmakers who pointed to continued instability, ongoing attacks, and lack of clear victory indicators.
War Cost Under Fire — $25 Billion and Rising
Another major flashpoint was the financial burden of the war.
Officials confirmed that the United States has already spent around $25 billion on the conflict, mostly on weapons and military operations.
Lawmakers fired back with tough questions:
How long can taxpayers sustain this spending?
What is the total expected cost?
Has Congress been fully informed?
Hegseth defended the spending by arguing that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is worth the cost, suggesting the alternative would be far more dangerous.
“Is This Another Iraq or Afghanistan?”
Several lawmakers compared the situation to past wars, warning that the US could be entering another long-term military trap.
Democratic Congressman John Garamendi described the war as a potential “quagmire”, citing:
American casualties
Rising civilian deaths
No clear exit strategy
Hegseth strongly rejected this claim, calling such statements “irresponsible” and harmful to US interests.
Heated Clash Over Civilian Casualties
One of the most emotional parts of the hearing focused on civilian impact, especially reports of a deadly school attack in Iran.
Congressman Adam Smith raised concerns about a strike in the city of Minab, where many children were reportedly killed.
Lawmakers demanded answers:
Was the US responsible?
Why has there been no clear acknowledgment?
Are investigations being conducted?
Officials admitted that investigations are ongoing but did not provide definitive answers, further intensifying criticism.
Strategic Confusion and Lack of Endgame
Another key issue raised during the Q&A session was the absence of a clear strategy.
Lawmakers repeatedly asked:
What is the final objective of this war?
When will it end?
What does “victory” actually mean?
General Dan Caine responded cautiously, stating that the military always provides a range of options and adapts to evolving situations. However, this did little to satisfy critics demanding a concrete roadmap.
Legal Authority Under Scrutiny
The legality of the war also became a central topic.
Lawmakers questioned whether the administration had:
Proper congressional approval
Followed the War Powers Resolution
With the 60-day legal deadline approaching, concerns were raised about whether the war could continue without a formal vote in Congress.
This added another layer of tension, as the administration may soon face a politically risky decision.
Political Divisions on Full Display
Democratic Pressure
Democrats led the criticism, focusing on:
Human cost of the war
Economic burden on citizens
Lack of transparency
Congressman Seth Moulton sharply questioned whether the war’s cost to taxpayers—estimated at hundreds of dollars per citizen—was justified.
Republican Position — Support with Caution
While many Republicans supported the administration’s stance against Iran, some raised concerns about:
Leadership changes in the military
Long-term planning
This created a rare moment where both parties demanded answers, even if for different reasons.
Personal Attacks and Rising Tensions
The tone of the session became increasingly aggressive as the debate escalated.
Hegseth accused critics of being “defeatist” and undermining national security. In response, lawmakers accused the administration of:
Misleading the public
Ignoring consequences
Repeating past mistakes
In another tense moment, questions were even raised about leadership judgment and decision-making at the highest level.
Global Context and Wider Concerns
The hearing also touched on broader strategic issues.
Some lawmakers argued that focusing heavily on Iran creates an imbalance in global priorities, especially when:
China is considered the biggest threat
Russia and North Korea remain major concerns
This raised questions about whether US resources are being used effectively.
A War Still Surrounded by Uncertainty
Despite strong defence from officials, the session made one thing clear: there is no unified view in Washington on the Iran war.
Key uncertainties remain:
No clear timeline
No agreed definition of success
Growing financial and human costs
Conclusion: A Political Battle Far From Over
The congressional hearing was not just a routine review—it was a powerful display of democracy in action, where leaders were forced to defend their decisions under intense scrutiny.
The fiery question-and-answer session revealed deep concerns about the war’s direction and raised critical questions that remain unanswered.
As the conflict continues, pressure on the administration is likely to grow, and future hearings may become even more intense.
One thing is certain: the battle over the Iran war is now being fought as fiercely in Congress as it is on the battlefield.
3 United States nationals have been ordered to leave India after allegedly engaging in religious preaching while staying on tourist visas, police in Pune said.
According to police, the three US nationals, aged 53, 65 and 66, had arrived in India earlier this month on tourist visas.
During an investigation, authorities found they had allegedly taken part in activities linked to religious preaching and giving religious instructions, which police said violated the conditions of a tourist visa.
Pamphlets Recovered in Pune
Police said the three individuals were found distributing pamphlets about the Bible and Christianity in English, Hindi and Marathi to a taxi driver in Pune.
The driver reportedly alleged that they tried to influence him and then informed the police.
After detaining the group, police recovered a large number of religious pamphlets in different languages from their possession.
Referred to Foreigners Registration Office
Following detention, the three US nationals were referred to the Foreigners Registration Office for further questioning.
Sandeep Bhajibhakare said notices had been issued under immigration and foreigners laws.
Police Increase Vigilance
Authorities said similar cases of foreign nationals violating visa rules had been reported earlier in Pune and nearby Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Because of previous incidents, police said vigilance has been increased in the area.
Official Statement
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Bhajibhakare said foreign nationals visiting on tourist visas are legally not allowed to engage in religious propagation or preaching.
He said the present action was taken because of an alleged violation of those rules.
Final Word
The case highlights India’s strict visa regulations, especially regarding activities beyond tourism. Visitors entering on tourist visas are expected to follow the purpose of travel stated in their visa conditions.
Sajad Gani Lone on Wednesday strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party, National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party, accusing them of colluding in what he described as “match fixing” during Rajya Sabha elections.
Referring to his own experience during the 2015 Rajya Sabha election, Lone said he had cast his vote even though his party had not fielded any candidate.
He claimed that the ruling alliance at the time requested his party to appoint an agent of their choice.
According to Lone, the person appointed was not an MLA and went on to verify his vote as well as that of fellow MLA Advocate Bashir Ahmed Dar.
Questions Over Election Rules
Lone said it was difficult to believe that the NC or PDP were unaware of the rules governing polling agents in Rajya Sabha elections.
He argued that appointing agents is one of the most important procedural steps in such elections and said the rules were clear.
According to Lone, a party can appoint an agent whether or not it fields a candidate, unless it chooses not to do so.
Claims of Wider Collusion
The Peoples Conference leader alleged that the National Conference did not insist on appointing agents, while the PDP did not appoint agents at all.
He said this suggested a much wider pattern of political understanding among parties.
Lone further claimed that information obtained through an RTI filed by journalist Umer pointed towards involvement of at least three parties — BJP, NC and PDP.
He also alleged that the BJP could not have secured the Rajya Sabha seat without active support from the NC and PDP.
Sharp Message to Political Parties
Ending his remarks, Lone said ordinary people were the real losers in such political dealings.
He said the people of Kashmir deserved better and added that the political joke was being played on them.
Political Significance
The allegations are likely to trigger fresh debate in Jammu & Kashmir politics, especially around past alliances, cross-party voting and trust in democratic institutions.
Neither the BJP, NC nor PDP immediately responded publicly to the claims at the time of reporting.

However, officials have indicated that a separate review may happen later.
Mixed Public Reaction
People across Jammu and Srinagar have reacted differently.

Major Step in Kashmir Rail Connectivity
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the first direct train service between Katra and Srinagar on 6 June 2025. That service is now being extended up to Jammu Tawi Railway Station, giving passengers a longer and more convenient direct route.
This extension is being seen as another important milestone in linking Kashmir with the rest of India through rail.
Journey Through Challenging Terrain
Officials said the modern 20-coach Vande Bharat train will begin its maiden run from Jammu Tawi and travel to Srinagar through some of the most difficult mountain terrain in the region.
At the same time, another train will depart from Srinagar towards Jammu.
Before the official launch, a successful trial run of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat was carried out from Jammu to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra earlier this week.
Distance and Weekly Schedule
The train will cover a total distance of around 267 kilometres.
Railway officials said the service will run six days a week in both directions:
Jammu to Srinagar
Srinagar to Jammu
There will be no service on Tuesdays.
Modern Features for Passengers
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said the Vande Bharat train has been built using indigenous technology and offers a world-class travel experience.
Important features include:
Kavach safety system
GPS-based passenger information system
Comfortable rotating seats
Modern interiors
Faster and smoother journey
He said the service will reduce travel time and help the local economy and tourism sector.
Tourism Expected to Rise
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the development and said it would definitely help tourism.
He noted that train capacity had been limited until now because only an eight-coach train was running between Katra and Srinagar.
Now, with a 20-coach train, many more passengers will be able to travel, which is likely to increase visitor numbers and ease bookings.
Long Journey of the Rail Project
The ₹28,000-crore rail project connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country began in the late 1990s.
Important milestones include:
2005: Train services reached Udhampur
October 2008: First train started in Kashmir Valley
2025: Valley linked through difficult Pir Panjal terrain
2026: Jammu-Srinagar direct Vande Bharat begins
The Pir Panjal mountain range had remained one of the biggest engineering challenges in completing the route.
Final Word
The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is set to transform travel in Jammu & Kashmir. With faster journeys, more seats, better comfort and year-round connectivity, the train is expected to become a major support for tourism, trade and daily travel across the region.

During the ceremony, keynote speakers from different sessions of the weeklong campaign were honoured for their valuable contributions. Earlier, Dr. Parvez Alam, Chief Proctor, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the activities held during the awareness drive. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Mamta Bhat.
The closing ceremony was also attended by keynote speakers including Advocate Ashfaq Lone, Dr. Danish Iqbal Raina, and R. C. Bhat, along with faculty members, officers, and a large number of students.
The programme ended with a collective pledge to continue efforts towards creating a drug-free campus and a healthier society.
Altaf Bukhari has urged the government to reconsider its decision to ban Dar-ul-Uloom Jamia Siraj-ul-Uloom in Shopian, saying thousands of students should not suffer because of matters beyond their control.
He said nearly 10,000 students depend on the institution for their education and future opportunities. According to Bukhari, shutting down such a major educational centre could badly affect many families and young people. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
He also said the institution does not have a history of producing people who choose violence. Even if a few isolated cases may have happened, he described them as rare exceptions rather than the rule. He added that no institution in the country can claim to be completely free from such uncommon incidents.
Bukhari further pointed out that some individuals previously linked with Jamaat-e-Islami later formed the Justice and Development Front, which was officially registered by the Election Commission of India. He questioned why students should face hardship if others were allowed to continue through legal and democratic means.
He said the government should deal with the matter in a constructive and practical way. Instead of a ban, he suggested forming a proper management body to supervise the institution and ensure that education continues without interruption.
Bukhari warned that banning educational institutions could increase feelings of alienation and public grievances. He said the need of the hour is to reduce the trust gap through reconciliation and confidence-building measures for long-term peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted one-week interim bail to jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid (Er Rashid) on humanitarian grounds, allowing him to visit his critically ill father.
Engineer Rashid, who is lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with an NIA terror-funding case, had approached the High Court after a Delhi court (Patiala House) rejected his interim bail plea on April 24, 2026. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The High Court allowed Rashid to be released for seven days. He will remain either at the hospital or his father’s residence under the supervision of at least two police officials.
Background of the Case
Rashid’s father has been hospitalised and is reportedly in critical condition, with reports earlier stating he was put on ventilator support. Rashid had sought interim bail to meet his ailing father, describing it as a last opportunity to see him.
His brother and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) legislator, Sheikh Khursheed, had earlier termed the lower court’s rejection of bail as “nothing short of inhuman.”
Political Reactions
The decision has been widely welcomed by several political parties and leaders in Jammu and Kashmir:
Rashid’s own party, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), hailed the High Court order as “humanitarian justice.”
Leaders from the Awami National Conference also welcomed the decision, calling it a “humane and compassionate” move.
Several other J&K-based parties had earlier rallied behind Rashid, urging authorities to grant him temporary release on humanitarian grounds.
Notably, Rashid had earlier been granted custody parole to attend the Parliament’s Budget session this year. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla constituency as an independent candidate, defeating National Conference leader Omar Abdullah with a significant margin.
Current Status
Engineer Rashid is facing trial in a National Investigation Agency (NIA) case. His regular bail plea is also pending before the Delhi High Court.
The one-week interim bail is strictly for meeting his ailing father and is subject to conditions imposed by the court, including police escort.
This development comes amid continued political support for Rashid across party lines in the Kashmir Valley on humanitarian grounds.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday led a strong protest in Srinagar against the National Conference-led Jammu and Kashmir government over the removal of Urdu as a mandatory qualification in revenue department recruitments, particularly for Tehsildar examinations.
Accompanied by PDP workers, Iltija Mufti staged the demonstration in the heart of Srinagar, raising slogans in support of the Urdu language and accusing the Omar Abdullah government of attacking the linguistic and cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Iltija Mufti’s Strong Remarks
Addressing the protesters and media, Iltija Mufti said:
“We have come here because Urdu is being removed. The National Conference has attacked the Urdu language. Urdu is a part of our faith, culture, and civilisation… Urdu language is the very soul of our literature and culture.”
She further elaborated:
“We know that Jammu and Kashmir comprises diverse regions with different mother tongues — whether it is Kashmiri, Gujri, Pahari, or Punjabi — but we all know and understand Urdu. An attack on Urdu is, in essence, an attack on our knowledge, our culture, and our literature.”
Iltija asserted that the move by the NC government is not just administrative but a direct assault on the composite culture and historical identity of the region.
Background of the Controversy
The row erupted after the J&K Revenue Department released draft recruitment rules on April 10, 2026, for various non-gazetted posts in the revenue services, including Patwari, Naib Tehsildar, and Tehsildar. In the new draft, the mandatory requirement of Urdu language proficiency (which existed for decades alongside graduation) has been removed. Only a graduation degree is now listed as the minimum qualification.
Urdu has been the traditional language of administration and revenue records in Jammu and Kashmir since the Dogra era (late 19th century). It remained the link language even after 1947 and was used extensively in land records, court documents, and official communication.
The PDP had earlier strongly opposed the move, describing it as a “deliberate attempt to sideline and erase Urdu from the administrative framework” and “culturally insensitive.” The party demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification.
Political Reactions
PDP’s Stand: The party, led by Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti, views the decision as part of a systematic erosion of Kashmir’s linguistic and cultural heritage. They argue that since most existing revenue records are in Urdu, removing the language requirement will create practical difficulties in governance and disconnect future officers from ground-level work.
BJP’s Position: The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the change, calling it a “course correction.” BJP leaders argue that J&K now has five official languages (Urdu, Hindi, Kashmiri, Dogri, and English), so no single language should be made mandatory. They suggest candidates should have knowledge of any one official language.
National Conference: The ruling NC government is yet to issue an official comment on the fresh protest by Iltija Mufti.
Broader Context
This is not the first time the Urdu issue has sparked debate in J&K. In 2025, when Urdu was made compulsory for Naib Tehsildar posts, the BJP had protested against it. The current draft rules appear to address that concern by making Urdu non-mandatory.
Several Urdu organisations and the J&K Urdu Council have also opposed the move, warning that it will create administrative hurdles as common people, especially in rural areas, are more comfortable with Urdu in revenue matters.
The protest by Iltija Mufti reflects the PDP’s strategy to position itself as the defender of Kashmir’s cultural and linguistic identity in the changed political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.
The J&K administration has invited objections and suggestions on the draft rules within 15 days. It remains to be seen whether the government will revise the notification or stick to its stand.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Doda East, Mehraj Malik, was released from Kathua jail on Tuesday morning after the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court quashed his detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Justice Mohd Yousuf Wani delivered the order on Monday, April 27, allowing the habeas corpus petition filed by Malik and setting aside the PSA detention order (No. 05 of 2025) issued by the District Magistrate, Doda, on September 8, 2025. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Malik had been in preventive custody for nearly eight months (approximately 229 to 299 days) without trial. He became the first sitting MLA in Jammu and Kashmir to be detained under the PSA following the 2024 assembly elections.
Court’s Key Observations
The High Court ruled that the grounds cited in the detention order pertained only to “law and order” issues and did not meet the higher threshold required to justify detention under the PSA for threatening “public order.” The court observed that the allegations did not indicate any real apprehension that Malik was likely to act in a manner prejudicial to public order.
The judgment has been seen as a strong judicial rebuke against the alleged misuse of the stringent preventive detention law against an elected representative.
Background of Detention
Mehraj Malik was booked under PSA following a verbal altercation with the then District Commissioner of Doda over the shifting of a primary health centre and other local issues. He was lodged in Kathua jail since September 2025.
Reactions
The development has been welcomed by AAP leaders and several political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
AAP spokespersons described the verdict as a victory for democracy and expressed renewed faith in the judiciary.
National AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, welcomed the court’s decision and called Mehraj Malik’s struggle inspiring.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other opposition voices had earlier criticised the use of PSA against the MLA.
After his release, Mehraj Malik urged educated youth to actively enter politics to shape the future of the region.
Significance
The Public Safety Act allows detention of individuals for up to two years without formal charges or trial. It has frequently drawn criticism from human rights groups and political parties for its potential misuse to silence dissenting voices.
This verdict is being viewed as an important check on the invocation of PSA, especially in cases involving elected public representatives.
Malik’s release this morning was followed by celebrations by his supporters in Doda and Kishtwar.
