PDP Leader Mohammed Ashraf Malik Backs J&K Medical Interns, Demands Rs 30,000 Stipend

Srinagar, September 1: Senior PDP leader and in-charge of Doru Assembly Constituency, Mohammed Ashraf Malik, has extended support to MBBS and BDS interns protesting at government medical colleges and SKIMS Bemina, urging the Jammu and Kashmir administration to increase their stipend. Malik said medical interns were performing important duties across hospitals, including attending emergencies, working night shifts and serving in rural areas, while receiving a monthly stipend of only Rs 12,300.
He claimed that the stipend had remained unchanged for nearly seven years and amounted to roughly Rs 400 per day, which he said was inadequate given the workload and responsibilities of the interns.
“Medical interns are not merely trainees; they are an essential part of our healthcare system. They work long hours, attend emergencies and serve patients even in difficult rural postings. Paying them a stipend that does not reflect their workload and responsibilities is unfair and demoralising,” Malik said.
Malik highlights stipend disparity
The PDP leader also pointed to the significant difference between stipends paid to medical interns in J&K and those in other states.
Citing figures shared by the protesting interns, Malik said Odisha pays medical interns around Rs 44,319 per month, while interns in J&K continue to receive substantially less.
He urged the administration and concerned departments to engage directly with the protesting interns and resolve the issue without further delay.
Malik supported the interns’ demand to increase their monthly stipend to Rs 30,000, saying the revision would recognise their contribution to the healthcare system and provide them with fairer compensation.
“Those who stand at the frontline of patient care deserve dignity, fair compensation and respect. The government must listen to our young doctors and address their genuine demands at the earliest,” he said.
