Farooq Abdullah Says J&K Will Not Bow Down, Intensifies Demand for Restoration of Statehood

Speaking in the context of the National Conference protest in Srinagar on September 2, 2026, Abdullah criticised the Centre over what he described as continued delays in restoring the region’s political and constitutional rights.
‘We will not bow’
Abdullah said the protest was a clear message that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would not remain silent or give up their rights.
He said the National Conference would continue to fight for its demands despite the challenges facing the region.
Abdullah questions Centre over statehood
The NC president accused the Central government of failing to fulfil commitments made regarding the political process in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the government had indicated that delimitation and elections would be followed by the restoration of statehood. However, he argued that the promised process had not been completed as expected.
Abdullah also questioned the delay in issuing the business rules that, according to him, were expected earlier this year.
Challenges claims of complete normalcy
Abdullah also questioned the Centre’s claims that complete peace and normalcy had returned to Jammu and Kashmir.
Referring to continuing security incidents, he alleged that an atmosphere of fear was still being maintained in the region and suggested that this was being used as a reason to delay the restoration of statehood.
Calls for economic self-reliance
The NC president also appealed to people in Jammu and Kashmir to become more economically self-reliant.
He argued that continued economic dependence on New Delhi makes it difficult for the region to achieve greater dignity and independence.
Abdullah’s latest remarks come as the National Conference continues to press the Centre for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, making the issue a major point of political debate in the Union Territory.
