SKIMS Celebrates 80th Independence Day, Highlights Major Healthcare and Research Achievements

The celebrations featured a vibrant march-past by SKIMS Security, Jammu and Kashmir Police and a CRPF battalion, followed by colourful cultural performances by students of IPTS KhanSahib, Budgam.
Prof M Ashraf Ganie Highlights SKIMS Transformation
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ganie said the transformation of SKIMS represents an important milestone in the journey towards Viksit Bharat.
He said the institution has emerged as a leading centre for specialised healthcare, academic excellence, medical research and skilled human resource development.
The Director highlighted several major initiatives and achievements recorded by SKIMS over the past two years.
These include:
- Expansion and modernisation of infrastructure
- Strengthening of specialised and advanced patient care
- Decentralised governance and improved institutional functioning
- The first successful Matched Unrelated Donor (MUD) stem cell transplant
- Swapped kidney transplantation
- Patient-centred and compassionate healthcare initiatives
- Round-the-clock healthcare support for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims
- Nasha Mukt Bharat awareness programmes
- National and international academic conferences and CMEs
- Growing research output, including publications in prestigious journals such as The Lancet and Nature
Focus on Healthcare, Research and Innovation
Prof. Ganie said SKIMS is continuing to strengthen its role in specialised healthcare while expanding its academic and research activities.
The institution’s growing research output and presence in leading international medical journals reflect its increasing contribution to medical science and healthcare, he said.
He also highlighted initiatives aimed at improving patient care and making healthcare services more responsive to the needs of patients.
Director Thanks J&K Government
Prof. Ganie expressed gratitude to the Government of Jammu and Kashmir for its continued support to SKIMS.
He particularly acknowledged Chief Secretary J&K Atal Dulloo for facilitating several important initiatives, including the first-ever meeting of the Standing Finance Committee (SFC) held at the SKIMS campus.
The Director also praised the dedication of SKIMS employees, saying the institution’s progress was a collective achievement.
He credited faculty members, healthcare professionals, officers, officials and support staff for their commitment to the institution and its patients.
Cultural Programme and Awards
The Independence Day programme was organised by the Department of Hospital Administration under the leadership of its Head, Prof. G. H. Yatoo.
The celebrations concluded with a colourful cultural programme featuring student performances.
An award ceremony was also held to recognise the efforts of staff members who contributed to the successful organisation of the Independence Day celebrations.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening SKIMS as a centre of excellence in healthcare, education and research while contributing to the broader vision of a developed India.
