‘Daal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai’: Farooq Abdullah Questions Selective Terror Threats to Kashmiri Pandits

Abdullah has raised doubts over the source and purpose of the threat messages, saying there may be more to the matter than meets the eye. Using the Hindi expression “Daal mein kuch kaala hai”, meaning that something appears suspicious, he called for a high-level investigation by the central government.

Farooq Abdullah Questions Selective Targeting

Speaking to reporters, Abdullah said it was surprising that online threat letters allegedly linked to groups such as the United Liberation Council appeared to specifically target Kashmiri Pandit employees appointed under the Prime Minister’s Special Package.

He questioned why similar threats were not being issued to other non-local Hindu employees, political workers from different parties and local residents who continue to live and work across the Kashmir Valley.

Abdullah said the selective nature of the threats raised questions about who was behind them and what their actual objective was.

Calls for Central Investigation

Abdullah urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to order a detailed investigation into the matter.

He said the authorities should identify the people or organisations responsible for issuing the online threats and establish where the messages originated.

The NC president said the investigation should also examine whether the threats were genuine or part of an attempt to create fear among Kashmiri Pandit employees.

Questions Timing of Threat Messages

Abdullah also questioned the timing of the recent threats.

He pointed out that such security-related scares sometimes emerge around politically sensitive periods, including preparations for Independence Day and discussions surrounding the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s full statehood.

According to Abdullah, the timing and selective targeting deserve closer examination by security agencies before conclusions are reached.

Abdullah Calls for Kashmiri Pandit Reintegration

The former chief minister also spoke about the long-term rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley.

Abdullah said keeping Kashmiri Pandit employees in protected transit camps or separate colonies should not be viewed as a permanent solution.

He argued that genuine rehabilitation should involve their return to normal community life and greater social integration.

Abdullah said Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits had historically lived together and maintained close social relations. He therefore stressed the need to rebuild that shared social environment rather than keeping communities separated behind security arrangements.

Need for a Transparent Probe

The latest remarks come amid continuing concerns over the safety of Kashmiri Pandit employees working in the Valley.

Abdullah’s demand for a central investigation is aimed at determining whether the online threats represent a genuine security challenge or are intended to create fear and division.

A transparent investigation by the relevant security agencies could help establish the authenticity of the messages, identify those responsible and provide greater clarity to employees and their families.

The issue is likely to remain under close watch as Jammu & Kashmir approaches Independence Day and political discussions over the restoration of statehood continue.
