CIK Arrests Two in Kashmir Over Alleged Radical Content Shared on Social Media

Srinagar: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) has arrested two suspects in connection with an investigation into the alleged sharing of radical and anti-national content on social media platforms, officials said.

The arrests came a day after CIK teams conducted searches at several locations across the Kashmir Valley on August 8.

The searches were carried out in connection with FIR No. 03/2023, registered at Police Station CIK Srinagar under Sections 505 and 153-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 13 and 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Two Suspects Arrested

The two suspects were arrested on Sunday, August 9. They have been identified as:

• Mehran Qazi, son of Atta Mohammad Qazi, a resident of Hiller Shahbad, Dooru, Anantnag.
• Babar Hamid Dar, son of Abdul Hamid Dar, a resident of Chankan, Sopore.

According to CIK officials, the case relates to the alleged dissemination of radical and anti-national material through social media platforms.

Digital Devices and SIM Cards Seized

During the searches, investigators seized six digital devices and seven SIM cards.

The seized material has been taken for detailed examination as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are expected to examine the devices and digital records to establish the nature and extent of the alleged online activity.

What CIK Alleges

According to the investigating agency, the two arrested suspects were allegedly found to have shared material containing what officials described as radical and anti-national overtones.

The alleged content reportedly included:

• Radical narratives and extremist viewpoints
• Material allegedly glorifying individuals linked to terrorism
• Promotion of extremist narratives
• Content that investigators believe could influence or radicalise impressionable people

However, the allegations remain part of an ongoing investigation, and the suspects have not been convicted of any offence.

Investigation Underway

The CIK said the investigation is continuing and that the seized digital material is being examined in accordance with the law.

Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, officials said.

The case remains under investigation, and additional details are expected as investigators complete their examination of the seized devices and other material.
