National Handloom Day Celebrated in Ladakh’s Changthang with Tiranga Rally and Support for Local Weavers

Leh: National Handloom Day was celebrated in Lukung village in Ladakh’s Changthang region on Friday with a Tiranga rally, the distribution of weaving equipment and programmes aimed at supporting local artisans while preserving the region’s rich handloom heritage.

Focus on Preserving Traditional Handloom Heritage

Deputy Commissioner Nitish Rajora, who attended the event as the chief guest, said Ladakh’s handloom tradition is an important part of the region’s cultural identity.

He stressed the need to preserve traditional weaving techniques while encouraging innovation to improve the quality and market value of locally produced handloom products.

Rajora also appreciated the efforts of the Department of Handlooms and Handicrafts and the local administration for working towards the welfare of artisans and weavers in the remote Changthang region.

Weaving Equipment Distributed to Artisans

As part of the celebrations, officials distributed Amber Charkhas and Fly Shuttle Looms to local weavers under various government initiatives aimed at strengthening the handloom sector and increasing productivity.

The programme seeks to support traditional artisans by providing modern equipment while helping them improve their livelihoods.

Tiranga Rally Marks the Occasion

A colourful Tiranga rally formed one of the main attractions of the event.

Local artisans and handloom weavers led the rally carrying a hand-knitted Indian national flag prepared by women weavers from the region.

Students, government officials and local residents also joined the rally, celebrating both National Handloom Day and the spirit of patriotism.

Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign Begins

The programme also marked the launch of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Changthang, with week-long celebrations beginning on 7 August.

Officials encouraged public participation in activities promoting national pride and community involvement.

Cleanliness Drive at Pangong Lake

A cleanliness drive was organised around Pangong Lake under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign.

Officials, students, artisans and local residents took part in the initiative to promote environmental conservation and keep one of Ladakh’s most visited tourist destinations clean.

Why National Handloom Day Is Observed

National Handloom Day is observed every year on 7 August to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which encouraged the use of indigenous products during India’s freedom struggle.

The day recognises the contribution of handloom weavers and promotes the preservation of India’s rich textile heritage.
