Located on a hill in Thiksey, around 19 kilometres from Leh, the monastery is one of the most prominent Buddhist sites in central Ladakh. It is also known for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Tibet.
The monastery was founded in 1433 and houses a rich collection of ancient Buddhist artefacts, including statues, stupas, scroll paintings and wall paintings.
One of its most notable features is a 15-metre-high statue of Maitreya Buddha, which was installed in the 1980s.
Thiksey Monastery draws visitors
Thiksey Monastery is particularly known for its daily morning prayers, which attract visitors who come to experience its peaceful spiritual atmosphere.
The hilltop location also offers panoramic views of nearby villages and the surrounding landscape, with the Indus River visible in the distance.
Gor arrived in Leh on Thursday, following a series of high-level engagements in Jammu and Kashmir.
His visit marks a significant trip by a senior US diplomat to the strategically important frontier region, particularly following the 2020 Galwan clashes and the subsequent India-China border tensions.
US envoy visits Srinagar
Before travelling to Ladakh, Ambassador Gor visited the Kashmir Valley and held discussions with several regional stakeholders.
During his arrival in Srinagar, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as “an important part of India” while speaking to reporters.
He made the remarks during his visit to the region, where he also met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“Kashmir is an important part of India. I am visiting the place for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place,” Gor said.
Following his meeting with Abdullah, the US envoy described the discussions as warm and expressed optimism about strengthening India-US relations.
“We had a very warm meeting and we look forward to building on our relationship,” he said.
First meeting with J&K Chief Minister in more than 15 years
The meeting between Gor and Omar Abdullah was significant as it marked the first interaction between a serving US ambassador to India and a sitting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister in more than 15 years, according to the report.
The previous such meeting took place in 2011, when then-US Ambassador Timothy Roemer met Omar Abdullah.
The last standalone visit to Kashmir by a US envoy was reportedly made by Kenneth Juster in 2018. He later returned to the region in 2020 as part of a wider diplomatic delegation.
Strategic significance of Gor’s visit
Gor’s visit comes against the backdrop of major political and security changes in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, when the Centre revoked the region’s special constitutional status and reorganised the former state into two Union Territories.
His engagements in Srinagar and Ladakh have therefore attracted attention, particularly because they represent renewed high-level diplomatic engagement with Jammu and Kashmir.
The visit also comes as India and the United States continue to strengthen their strategic relationship, including cooperation on security and counter-terrorism issues.
Gor has also held recent discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with counter-terrorism cooperation among the issues discussed.
The ambassador’s visit to Ladakh and his earlier engagements in Kashmir highlight the growing importance of Jammu and Kashmir in India’s wider diplomatic and strategic engagement with the United States.
