‘Same Was Done to Morsi’: Imran Khan’s Sister Reveals What He Told Her in Hospital

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan reportedly compared his treatment in prison with the detention of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, according to his sister Dr Uzma Niazi.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad on Friday morning, Uzma Niazi described her meeting with her brother at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital the previous night. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

She said Imran Khan repeatedly told her that he had been subjected to injustice and torture and referred to what happened to Mohamed Morsi while he was in custody.

Imran Khan allegedly raised Morsi comparison

According to Uzma Niazi, Imran Khan referred to Morsi several times during their conversation and allegedly told her that similar circumstances were now being faced by him.

She claimed that Khan spoke about being kept in solitary confinement and said he had repeatedly sought medical treatment but did not receive what he considered adequate care.

“I used to tell them that Morsi was killed in the exact same manner,” Uzma said while describing her concerns to the media.

The claims could not be independently verified. The Pakistani government has repeatedly rejected allegations that Khan is being denied necessary medical care or subjected to improper treatment.

PTI alleges solitary confinement and inadequate treatment

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has for a long time alleged that Imran Khan has been kept in solitary confinement at Adiala Jail and has not received adequate medical facilities.

The issue became the subject of legal proceedings, with the Supreme Court ordering authorities to arrange a medical examination and treatment for the former prime minister at Shifa International Hospital.

However, Khan was instead taken to PIMS during the early hours of Friday, where a medical team, including doctors from Shifa International Hospital, examined him. He was later returned to Adiala Jail.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the decision to use PIMS was taken because of security concerns surrounding Shifa International Hospital.

He said a team including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician examined Khan and declared him medically fit. Tarar also said medical facilities had been provided to Khan in the past and would continue to be available whenever required.

Government rejects allegations of medical neglect

The government has maintained that Imran Khan has access to necessary medical care and has rejected allegations of mistreatment and medical neglect.

Officials have said Khan has undergone medical examinations during his imprisonment and that prison authorities remain responsible for providing healthcare whenever required.

The dispute intensified after Khan was taken to PIMS instead of the private hospital named in the Supreme Court’s order. PTI and Khan’s family have accused the government of failing to comply with the court’s directions, while the government has cited security concerns for the change.

Why Mohamed Morsi’s case is being discussed

Dr Uzma Niazi’s comments have brought renewed attention to the case of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president.

Morsi was removed from power by the military in July 2013 and remained in detention until his death during a court hearing on 17 June 2019.

Morsi collapsed in court after addressing the judges and was later pronounced dead. Egyptian authorities said he died after suffering a heart attack.

Human rights organisations, however, had raised concerns about his detention conditions and access to medical care. Amnesty International reported that Morsi had been held in solitary confinement for almost six years and had been allowed only three family visits during that period. The organisation called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of his death and his treatment in custody.

Morsi’s detention and health concerns

Morsi’s family had previously raised concerns about his health and access to treatment, including reports that he suffered from diabetes.

Amnesty International said restrictions on his communication with the outside world meant that little was known about his exact detention conditions. The organisation also reported that he had been prevented from accessing lawyers and doctors during his prolonged detention.

Morsi’s death became a major international human rights issue, with questions raised over whether his detention conditions and access to healthcare contributed to his deteriorating physical condition.

Imran Khan’s case remains under scrutiny

The comparison between Imran Khan and Mohamed Morsi has now become a subject of discussion following Khan’s brief hospital visit and return to Adiala Jail.

Khan’s family and PTI continue to raise concerns about his health and treatment in custody, while the government insists that he is receiving appropriate medical care.

The latest developments are also part of an ongoing legal dispute over the manner in which Khan should receive medical treatment while imprisoned. PTI has filed a contempt petition, alleging that the government failed to follow the Supreme Court’s directions regarding his hospital transfer.

The allegations made by Khan and his family remain disputed, and any claims of mistreatment or medical neglect would require independent verification.
