Protests Held in New York and San Jose in Support of Sonam Wangchuk

On Monday evening, members of the advocacy group Hindus for Human Rights (HFHR) gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Union Square, New York City, while a parallel demonstration was also held in San Jose, California. Protesters carried placards expressing support for Wangchuk and calling for justice and democratic rights.
The demonstrations come amid growing international attention on Wangchuk’s hunger strike and the broader protest movement in India. Supporters said the gatherings were intended to show solidarity with the activist and to highlight concerns over the issues he has raised.
According to reports, the US-based rights group has also announced plans for a larger solidarity rally in Washington, D.C., reflecting increasing engagement by members of the Indian diaspora.
The overseas protests follow days of demonstrations in India, where Wangchuk’s prolonged hunger strike has drawn widespread public attention. His deteriorating health and hospitalisation have prompted expressions of concern from supporters, activists and public figures, while protests demanding action have continued in several locations.
