Surinder Choudhary Highlights J&K’s Tricolour Legacy

Speaking to ANI, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said the region has a long history of respect and devotion to the national flag.

Choudhary said the Tricolour has been flying in Jammu and Kashmir since India’s Independence in 1947 and argued that the region’s patriotic sentiment should not be viewed only through the events following the abrogation of Article 370.

“This Tricolour has not just started flying recently; it has been waving in the sky continuously since Independence,” Choudhary said.

He added that people across Jammu and Kashmir, including those living along the borders, in the Kashmir Valley and in Jammu, had made sacrifices for the country.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said Independence Day celebrations were held in the region with the same spirit before August 5, 2019.

Darakhshan Andrabi Calls Rally a Sign of Change

J&K Waqf Board Chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi also welcomed the rally, describing it as a sign of changing attitudes and a move towards what she called a brighter future.

Andrabi said the Tricolour was increasingly being embraced by people across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly young people.

She said the sight of children carrying the national flag in Srinagar represented a significant change compared with previous decades.

According to Andrabi, the current atmosphere reflects a growing desire among people to participate in national celebrations and move forward together.

Tiranga Rally Part of Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign

The Srinagar rally is part of the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, which encourages citizens to display the National Flag at their homes as part of Independence Day celebrations.

The campaign was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative. It aims to encourage people to develop a personal connection with the Tricolour while remembering the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle.

150 Years of Vande Mataram to Be Highlighted

The 2026 Har Ghar Tiranga campaign will also include special programmes marking 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, India’s National Song.

Activities are planned across districts, blocks and panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country.

Major programmes are expected to include:

  • Tiranga rallies and processions
  • Exhibitions and cultural programmes
  • Tiranga concerts
  • Bike and cycle rallies
  • Tricolour lighting of important locations
  • Decorations and Rangoli programmes
  • ‘Selfie with Tiranga’ activities
  • Special events under the theme ‘Tiranga Salute to the Spirit of Vande Mataram’

The Srinagar rally comes as Jammu and Kashmir joins the wider nationwide celebrations ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026.
