Sri Lankan Cricket Coach Sumith Fernando Dies After Colombo Altercation Involving School Players

Fernando, 62, was injured four days earlier while trying to stop a fight between school-level players at a cricket facility in the Sri Lankan capital. He was taken to hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries.
Dispute Over Drinking Water Turns Violent
The incident took place on Saturday, August 8, during a cricket training session and match at a sports facility in Colombo.
According to initial reports, tensions began after young players found that there was no running drinking water available at the venue. An argument reportedly broke out between the players and support staff over the lack of basic facilities.
The dispute later escalated into a physical confrontation between two school cricketers.
Fernando was at the ground in his role as a mentor and curator and intervened in an attempt to stop the fight. During the confrontation, he was seriously injured.
He was subsequently taken to Colombo National Hospital, where he received treatment before his death on Tuesday.
17-Year-Old Player Arrested
Police have arrested a 17-year-old school cricketer in connection with the incident.
The teenager was reportedly arrested on August 10 and appeared before a Colombo magistrate the following day. Because he is a minor, he was placed in child probation custody while the investigation continues.
Police are also questioning witnesses and other young players who were present during the incident.
The case remains under investigation, and the suspect’s alleged involvement has yet to be established by a court.
A Respected Figure in School Cricket
Sumith Fernando was a respected name in Sri Lanka’s grassroots cricket system and was known for helping young players develop their skills.
He was associated with Prince of Wales’ College in Moratuwa, where he worked as a coach and helped develop school-level cricketers.
Fernando was also remembered for mentoring Kusal Mendis during the Sri Lankan batter’s school cricket years. Mendis later went on to represent Sri Lanka at international level and became the country’s ODI captain.
In the later part of his career, Fernando also worked in ground and pitch preparation and was associated with Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, one of Sri Lanka’s historic cricket clubs.
Cricket Community Shocked
Fernando’s death has shocked Sri Lanka’s cricketing community, particularly because he was injured while attempting to stop a confrontation between young players.
The incident has also raised concerns about discipline, player behaviour and the availability of basic facilities at venues used for school cricket.
Fernando’s death is being mourned by his family, former students, fellow coaches and members of Sri Lanka’s wider cricket community.
His contribution to developing young cricketers is expected to remain part of his legacy in Sri Lankan school cricket.
