Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said he was not concerned about the possibility of his MLAs switching sides, asserting that he had full faith in them.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Omar, according to the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said, “I have faith in my MLAs. I am not afraid that my MLAs will move.” Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Omar hits back at BJP over seven-day Assembly session
Responding to criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the seven-day Assembly session, the Chief Minister questioned the basis of the charge that the government was being “non-serious”.
He pointed to the BJP’s record of Assembly proceedings in states where, he claimed, sessions had sometimes been limited to one or two days.
“What is non-serious about it? It’s a seven-day session. It would have been non-serious if we had followed the path shown by the BJP, where they have held one- or two-day sessions in their states,” Omar said.
Taking a further swipe at the BJP, he said its members were “hardly seen in Parliament”.
“These people never come to Parliament. They are never seen in Parliament,” he said.
Omar said members of his government remained present in the Assembly from morning until the end of proceedings.
“There is no such day when we ourselves are not present in the Assembly,” he said.
He challenged his critics to compare the functioning of the J&K Assembly with Parliament before questioning the seriousness of the government.
“Look at Parliament. Look at who sits for how long. Then you tell me who is taking it seriously and who is not,” the Chief Minister said.
‘I will react once a month, not every day’
Omar Abdullah also said he would not respond to every statement issued by his political opponents.
“I will react to one of their statements every month. Not every day,” he said.
The Chief Minister also took aim at some commentators whom he accused of using social media to target his government after failing to secure government accommodation.
“I didn’t give them a job in my government, and now they start writing. Here they are commentators who don’t get a government house, so they use social media against the government,” Omar said.
He went on to suggest that some of the criticism could have been different had such individuals received government accommodation.
“If I had given them a flat in Jawahar Nagar, would they have dared to write like this?” he asked.
Omar Abdullah concluded by saying that he was not troubled by what he described as “selfishness”, maintaining that such criticism would not distract him from his responsibilities as Chief Minister.
