Doda Bans VPN Use Across District, Warns of Legal Action Against Violators

The District Magistrate of Doda, Krishan Lal (JKAS), has ordered a complete ban on the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) across the district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The order was issued following reports of the alleged misuse of VPN services by certain individuals and groups to bypass lawful cyber restrictions and access prohibited applications, websites and digital content.

According to the District Magistrate, such activities could pose a threat to public order, tranquillity and national security. He said VPN services could potentially be misused for unlawful and anti-national activities, including spreading inflammatory material, encouraging unrest and coordinating activities that could affect law and order.

The prohibition applies to individuals, institutions, cyber cafés, business establishments and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) operating within Doda district.

However, the order provides an exemption for VPN use that has been specifically authorised by the government through an official order.

The District Magistrate warned that anyone found violating the directive would face legal action under the relevant provisions of law.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Doda, has been directed to ensure strict implementation of the order and take necessary action against those found violating it.

The administration said the move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of digital platforms and communication tools for activities that could have implications for public order and security.
