Iltija Mufti’s ‘Guftagu’ Initiative Begins with Interaction Among Young Women in Srinagar

Named “Guftagu”, meaning conversation, the initiative seeks to create a comfortable environment where young girls and women can share their experiences, discuss issues affecting them and put forward their suggestions.

The first session brought together young women who participated in an open interaction, raising issues that matter to them and sharing their views on the challenges they face in everyday life.

A space for honest conversation

Guftagu has been conceived as a platform where women can speak without hesitation about their dreams, experiences and concerns.

Rather than following a formal format, the initiative places emphasis on direct conversation and listening, allowing participants to bring forward subjects that are often difficult to discuss in wider public settings.

The organisers said the aim is to ensure that young women’s voices are heard and their suggestions become part of a wider conversation about society.

Iltija Mufti’s initiative

The initiative was conceived by PDP leader Iltija Mufti, who has sought to engage more directly with young women through such interactions.

The organisers expressed their appreciation to Mufti for giving the initiative a meaningful beginning and for approaching the idea with sincerity and enthusiasm.

The first gathering was presented not as a one-off event but as the beginning of a continuing outreach programme.

Participants at the heart of Guftagu

Organisers said the success of the first session belonged largely to the women who took the time to participate.

The young participants spoke openly, raised questions, offered suggestions and shared their perspectives on issues affecting women and young people.

Their willingness to speak honestly gave the session its character and helped create the kind of open discussion that Guftagu was designed to encourage.

Youth team extends support

The programme also received support from the local youth team, which helped facilitate the interaction and coordinate the event.

Special appreciation was expressed for the volunteers and supporters who contributed their time, listened to the participants and helped keep the discussion focused and inclusive.

Among those associated with the effort was PDP Youth District President Srinagar Tahir Lone.

More Guftagu sessions planned

The organisers have indicated that the first interaction is only the beginning.

More sessions are expected to follow, giving young women in different parts of Kashmir an opportunity to participate, raise local concerns and share their ideas.

The broader aim is to build a continuing dialogue in which women feel comfortable speaking about their aspirations as well as the difficulties they encounter.For Guftagu, the first Srinagar gathering has provided a starting point.
