Former Sarpanch Nayeem-u-Rehman, speaking on behalf of local residents, thanked MLA Sheikh Khursheed for sanctioning the project and fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people.

Existing Bridge Created Major Problems

The existing bridge could support only light motor vehicles, preventing heavy vehicles from reaching the main parts of Nowgam.

As a result, construction materials such as bricks, sand and bajri had to be unloaded near the bridge and then transported manually to homes. Residents said the situation caused considerable inconvenience and increased the cost and effort involved in construction work.

The limited capacity of the bridge also affected public transport. Heavy passenger vehicles could not access the area, leaving many residents dependent on Sumo services that often charged high fares.

Essential Supplies Faced Difficulties

Residents said the connectivity problem also affected the supply of essential commodities and other daily-use items to the main parts of Nowgam village.

The inability of larger vehicles to cross the existing bridge meant that goods often had to be transferred manually, adding to the difficulties faced by local people.

Old Bridge Also Affected Emergency Services

The narrow and low-capacity bridge created problems during emergencies as well.

According to residents, fire tenders were unable to cross the bridge during previous fire incidents, causing delays in firefighting operations and increasing concerns about the safety of homes and property.
